Conar is really not a lucky guy: When returning to his homeland with his wife and newborn daughter Nadia, Conar confesses to his father that he has been abused by the evil Tohre to protect his wife. Then his daughter is kidnapped and days later found dead. When the king is attacked, he is arrested and tortured. He finally signs a confession because they threaten beloved wife Liza. He is then sentenced to 150 lashes by the Tribunal, which amounts to a death sentence. Now his father, the king, regrets his actions, but it is already too late. The punishment is executed but eventually stopped, as the people and his friends revolt. But it is too late for Conar: The healer can do nothing for him and confirms his death. His coffin is loaded onto a ship. Liza marries Galen, Conar's twin brother, as she expects Conar's child and wants to save it from the evil Tohre. Tohre now governs the country: Tax increase, harassment of peasants and nobles, war with neighboring countries and the suppression of a revolt. Tohre also kills Galen, who is the father of Liza's next child. She also has a one-night stand with Conars half-brother Bre, from which emerges another daughter.
Bre hopes that Liza may become his wife, but Tohre chooses Conar's oldest half-brother for her. He loves Liza unrequited for a long time. Tohre can blackmail Liza because he knows that her son Corbin is actually Conar's son. To protect him, she would do anything.
Only on the last page of the book we meet Conar again. He is not dead, but had been drugged. Tohre has taken him to a kind of penal colony 'The Labyrinth' --- cliffhanger ending
