With Kimiko out of the cosplay game, Nagisa is forced to confront her own feelings about the hobby she loves. He mother arranges for her to meet someone who has been in Nagisa's shoes, and this woman challenges her to find where her passion truly lies, and discover where it can take her. Can Nagisa really cosplay forever, or will she be forced to abandon her dearest hobby?
Nagisa has to decide whether to give up her precious hobby or to stick with it. For advice, she goes to one of her mother's friends who kept up her gothic lolita hobby for years.
I gotta say, this series hit home with me (probably because I'm about the same age as Nagisa) and I'm sad that it's over. The ending was kinda predictable but I loved it anyway. And Kimiko's wedding made me cry.
I especially like how the author described one's love for a hobby. "Love is a curse. It's suffocating and so comforting."It reminds me of how I feel whenever I read a heart shattering fanfiction. It hurts...but I love it.
Really amazing series. I recommend it to anyone who's feeling the pains of outgrowing their favorite hobby.
Complex Age comes to a satisfying conclusion in its sixth and final volume. The characters have been evolving over the last two volumes as they have grown older and have had to think about the role that their Cos Play hobby will play for them. There are spoilers ahead. You have been warned.
For example, one of Nagisa's friends, who was always the official photographer of the group, chooses to abandon Cos Play, but to continue to attend Cos Play events as a photographer. She realizes that her life has changed since her early 20's and she needs to alter some of her priorities.
Nagisa, who has been the protagonist of the series, also is making changes as she grows older. She decides to establish a business that makes custom fit Cos Play costumes, and she is starting a romantic relationship. At age 28, Nagisa moves out of her parents home, sets up her new and successful business, and starts to think about her romantic future.
For Nagisa, establishing her business will enable her to still be involved with the world of Cos Play, and allow her to evolve as she matures and her life changes.
Complex Age is a superb self-contained series that tells a complete story in its six volumes. It treats the Cos Play world, and Cos Players, with sensitivity and respect. It is a fascinating look at this part of comic and movie fandom.
This series, and this final volume, hit especially close to home for me. I'm about the same age as protagonist Nagisa Kataura, so many of her struggles throughout the series ring true for me and my life as well.
This final volume had a satisfying (if a little bittersweet for me) conclusion as . Is it the ending I would have chosen? No, but then again, my love of cosplay and anime is different than Nagisa's. This is her story, and what she chooses makes the most sense for her. Would I have preferred a different ending? Something with ? Sure. But this is Nagisa's choice, and thankfully, it doesn't offer her truth as the one-size-fits-all solution.
In fact, this volume shows a lot of different people making their own choices for their own reasons, and none are presented as "right" or "wrong." Just "right" for that character, just like in real life.
This is probably one of the most honest and down-to-earth manga I've read in a long time, and for a manga fangirl going on 30, this was the perfect time to read this complex story.
Overall, I think this was a pretty solid series. It makes you question how your fandom can go on as you grow up. I love the idea of spinning it into your career (I esentially did that as a librarian who gets to add graphic novels to the collection). I think it must be harder for fans who love to cosplay. But it is hard to balance what you love with what society expects from you. I like that this ends on a fairly positive note.
I'm impressed with the wrap up. Bravo, Sakuma-sensei! I actually would have liked to see how Nagisa's store worked out. And called it on Director Hase. It was refreshing to read a manga based around characters not in high school. Hope the English language market keeps getting more josei and seinen titles.

This book was a great ending to a great series! I really appreciate the overall message of the story - that no matter your age, you don’t have to give up on your hobbies, your dreams, or the things that make you happy to live an ordinary life.
