Ezra can't wait for his "little" friend Finley to come over and play! But Ezra's parents are in for a surprise, because Finley isn't like Ezra's other friends--Finley is an elephant!
The two pals have some big, BIG plans, like: riding bikes, dancing in the tree house, and bouncing on the trampoline. But Ezra's parents come up with a list of rules. No piggyback rides. No loud voices. Absolutely no running inside.
No problem, though! Ezra and Finley have lots of ideas up their sleeves . . . and everything will be fine as long as they remember the most important rule of all: to always have fun!
This fun and funny friendship story is perfect for young readers and their parents who are all too familiar with their playdates.
I don't really understand the point of this one. Ezra's parents make up a bunch of fairly arbitrary rules and then proceed to throw cold water on their kid's playdate. His dad tells him they can make as much noise as they want outside, but then he goes outside and makes up another rule when they disturb his hammock nap. (Also, why does the dad have rhinophyma? Makes me wonder what else is in that mug besides coffee...)
There's no explanation of the rules, or talk about the importance of following them. It's just Ezra's parents making them up and trying to enforce them. Meanwhile, the elephant ends up smashing through the roof after he attempts to jump on the trampoline. Is it supposed to be amusing when Ezra tells him not to worry about it because his dad loves fixing things? (I doubt his dad thinks the giant hole in the roof is that funny.)
The pictures are cute, but the story is so weak that I just can't recommend this one. I'm still trying to figure out the point of it all.
A little boy is having his best friend over for a playdate for the very first time! He is so excited! They make a tent in his bedroom, have piggyback rides, and learn some rules for basic playdate safety: no running in the house, stay in the back yard, and more. The two friends have a grand time.
This is one of those picture books that encourages young audiences to read and look and discover the differences: the words tell a delighted story of a little boy’s first playdate. The pictures reveal that the friend coming to visit is – an elephant! Kids may get a big laugh over this, and adults may recognize themselves in the exhausted faces of the little boy’s hipster parents as they try to rein in the mess that two uninhibited kids at play can cause.
The boy narrating the story looks too old to be having his first playdate. (But I don’t think kids will care.)

Ezra is very excited to have his new friend, Finley, over for a playdate. Ezra's parents are surprised to find out the Finley is an elephant. As the playdate progresses, Ezra and Finley learn there are many rules that must be followed. The illustrations are cute and colorful, as well as comical. There are several situations that Ezra thinks are wonderful, but the illustrations show the reader otherwise. I like the small details, such as the mother spilling her coffee when she sees that Finley is an elephant. Overall, a cute read.
Not that anyone is bringing home an elephant as a playdate friend, but one never knows. I'm thinking maybe parents should check out the kid their kid is interested in bringing home for the day (or a slumber party...). Don't be blindsided! Good cautionary tale for parents and overall fun for the kiddies! Illustrations are hysterical! As parents, or grandparents, you may recognize some of these misadventures (I speak from experience...). Just warning.
This is a mighty fun read aloud for the playdate set. How can you not help but smile when Ezra's 'little' friend shows up. But sometimes even the best playdates go sideways. Fortunately the two friends work it out and still manage to have some fun... although Mom and Dad might need a few extra days to recover. Cute illustrations and fun text make this a book my kids will reach for again and again.
A fun book about a boy's playdate with his best friend, an elephant. Kids laughed while I was reading this one. It's a quick read, and it goes over some playdate rules that parents may want to share with toddlers.
When your best friend is an elephant, playdates can get a little crazy. Mom and Dad sure have a lot of rules, but that doesn't stop these two friends from having a great time.
Elephant and boy have a fun playdate as they discover what is allowed and what isn't. illustrates the idea that kids need to be taught the rules, we adults should not assume they know them.
Ezra and his parents are excited about a playdate with his best friend. But, soon his parents must come up with rules to make sure the playdate is enormously fun. Reviewer #1
