The landscape was the color of sand-weathered bone, and though the sky was cloudless blue, it was obscured by the dust kicked up from the column of vehicles headed up Route 4 where it forked northeast toward Baqubah. Behind them was Route 2, which led all the way back to Baghdad. Looking out the window of the Humvee, Corporal Camaro Espinoza saw nothing but billowing clouds of sandy grit.

The short story "Triage" is the traditional Boxing Day gift from author Sam Hawken for 2016 as posted on his blog. See the link under the official url listing for the story/book.

For fans of ex-combat medic Camaro Espinoza and her current day adventures back in the U.S.A. this provides a glimpse at her life while serving in Iraq during the 2007 war against the Islamic State of Iraq. You can guess the theme of the story just from the title, i.e."Triage: The process of determining the priority of patients' treatments based on the severity of their condition."

The story's references to the Battle of Baqubah and Operation Arrowhead Ripper are based on real-life, as a quick look at Wikipedia will tell you. "Triage" provides good character background for Hawken's series character which is otherwise only hinted at in the main stream of Camaro Espinoza stories and is also a good teaser to tide us over until the release of Walk Away on January 31, 2017.

Minor quibble: a possible typo?
"They had no machines here, so polished equipment.” should probably be: “They had no machines here, no polished equipment.” based on the description of a DIY workout gym in the middle of the U.S. Army's forward operating base.
