Great new series by MS Parker that involves Time Traveling—this is book 2 and in book 1, it ended with Gracen and Honor married. In book 2 it picks up right where book 1 left off, with the couple facing Gracen’s father and his extreme disapproval. Honor’s new father in law dislikes her and there is a lot of tension that can be felt. Her new father in law does a lot to see how he can force the marriage to end, up to making Gracen do this by any means necessary and go by to his original fiancee’ but Gracen stands firm and stands by Honor. Honor deals with a lot and in this story, with her going back over 200 years in history, she finds it hard because she cannot share what she knows or she could change history. I found it so sweet and inspiring that Gracen stood by Honor—in this story, there is a lot of twists and turns, journeys to and from across the sea, kidnappings, intrigues, trials and tribulations that rock in this story and leaves me waiting to see what happens to this great couple. This ends on a cliffhanger which leads to the 3rd and final book in this series.
My Rating: 4.4 stars ***** "I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***
I just want to say that I LOVE this new series. I've read a lot of MS Parker books, most of which I really love (a few that were less exciting to me, but that's personal taste), but all of them were well written and interesting. I was very excited to be offered an ARC for "Fear and Honor," because there's a special place in my heart for well-written time travel romance. (Let's face it, there's a TON of time travel romance novels out there, but they are by no means created equal.)
The Lightwood Affair series is definitely head and shoulders above the average for this sub-genre. As a lover of history, I love the accurate portrayals of societal attitudes, correct use of slang, etc. It's impossible not to draw at least a few parallels to the "Outlander" novels (their massive popularity and exhaustive, detailed historical research set the bar VERY high), but MS Parker's books are most certainly NOT knockoffs or "copy cat" writing. The parallels are these: a woman is thrown back in time, has medical training, and falls in love with a man from the past.
That's it.
If you've read the first book, you already understand this. If not, go back and read it now, then come back when you're done.
I'll wait. Really.
OK, so now that you've read "Fire and Honor," so you know how Gracen and Honor met and what they've already been through, and that at end of the book, they are married. "Fear and Honor" picks up right where the last book left off, with the couple facing Gracen's father and his extreme disapproval. There's a lot of tension between father and son, and father-in-law and Honor. He does everything he can to force Gracen to end the marriage and go back to his fiancé, but all he succeeds in doing is causing some arguments and ultimately solidifying the couple's desire to stay together.
There's very interesting insight into the Revolutionary Era in these books, and in a specific example, the law allowing the mandatory quartering of British Troops in the homes of private citizens. Even though the Lightwood Estate is a staunchly Loyalist household, the presence of British soldiers is unwelcome. There's interesting interactions between the Soldiers (one in particular) and the family, as well as the servants. The servants in particular, deeply resent the Soldiers' they have to cater to, but true to the era, they are stoic about it.
It's interesting to see the story shift from the American Colonies to France and see the radical differences between the two societies. It's also interesting to see the direct coloration between the American and French Revolutions develop.
If there's anything that bothered me about "Fear and Honor," I would have to say that it's Gracen acting like a child. There are multiple occasions where he deeply hurts Honor and they have to rebuild trust over and over. The fact that he honestly thought she would be "safe" in the colonies alone with his father while he went to France seemed completely crazy to me. She's a woman out of her time, and he knows his family hates her. Did he really think his father wouldn't do all he could to alienate her or even hard her in his absence? (There's also a nagging feeling that his hair color changed from the first book to the second. I believe he was blonde in "Fire and Honor," but now he has very dark hair? Confusing. I liked him as a blonde - it's a change from the current trend of "raven hair" paired with blue or green eyes that's glutted the Romance genre in general. This, along with Gracen's frustrating, constant mistrust and childish tantrums is what knocked off a star for me.)
It was so hard to put this book down and go to sleep at night, because there's so much suspense and uncertainty. And when they get along, Honor and Gracen's relationship heats up the page. It's easy to relate to Honor, because she's not comfortable with the clothing or expectations for women in 1175. What modern woman would be? She does her very best to fit in, but she knows when she sticks out like a sore thumb, and you feel for her keenly.
I hate spoilers so I won't go into detail, but when Honor is in serious danger, I was honestly anxious for her. I had no idea what direction the story would take, and I couldn't put it down. From that point until the end, I LOVED this book. The ending was tender and sweet, full of hope but also anxiety. The English have officially declared the Colonies to be in revolt, the French King hasn't picked a side (but he sided with the British regarding a barbaric act perpetrated by the British, insisting that "honorable men" wouldn't have done this, so this must of course be Colonist lies...), Honor's life has been threatened, and they must return home to America.
My hope is that the trust issues between Gracen and Honor are over - I don't want to see it rehashed interminably. I get that Gracen's attitudes, ideals, and social mores are very different, but he's also a rather liberal thinker for his time, and his personality leads him to be singularly loyal and devoted. So if he decides to trust Honor, he shouldn't constantly be making knee-jerk reactions and taking anyone's word over hers, for example.
If you haven't read any MS Parker books, be aware that "The Lightwood Affair" series is a departure from her norm. Most of her other novels are contemporary romance, usually with suspense, sometimes violence, sometimes BDSM, but ALWAYS sex. The same is true for "Lightwood": there's definitely sex, but it's not what drives the story. If you like time travel, history, and steamy romance, then you'll really enjoy these books.
At the end of "Fear and Honor" are two bonus books: "Collide" (book 1 of that series), and "Con Man". I already own the "Collide" series, which was pretty good, but "Con Man" is new to me. I haven't started it yet, so I won't review it here. I like when an author includes extra stories or books with a purchase, so I'm looking forward to reading "Con Man". I don't even mind that I already own "Collide".
Another brilliant series by M S Parker, this the second book in the Light wood affair is just as riveting as the first. Honour and Gracen are now married and his father is hating them for disgracing the family name, they are actively working for the colonists and have gone to France to try to gain support whilst there she is kidnapped and tortured and it is discovered that his father is behind it. Honour being from 200years in the future knows about things that will happen and has to be careful not to change the timeline too much, she is now pregnant and they need to go back to America. What will happen next, will she beagle to stay in this time or will she be called back to her own time? Can't wait to read the next book to find out. Brilliant series.
Fear And Honor: A Time Travel Romance (The Lightwood Affair Book 2)
Awesome storyline with absolutely delicious characters that have you on your edge of you sit, traveling you through time to recover and reach that place for love and naughty sexual twisted relations! Drama with fun, secrets from beyond it all, you will find out, this situation! Excellent!!I'm
Honor and Gracen have gone through an extensive process to get where they are. Honor not only travels from her time to the past but through some truly unfamiliar circumstances.
Gracen has had to deal with things he never even imagined would happen in his time let alone in his life.
Intense! Honor and Gracen have some personal battles to overcome. However, the biggest is the war. Will time travel, kidnappings and love be enough to separate this couple? Or will it strengthen their bond? Although I'm not a fan of period books, M. S. Parker's descriptive writing and factual accuracy make this book a great read.
I'm a huge fan of Outlander, so this series had the feel of that series, and I really enjoyed the interaction and love story of the main characters. However, the ending was a little too easy. We spent a lot of time with Honor and Gracen understanding their relationship and their need to help the rebels and then suddenly everything is resolved. Other than the ending though, I really enjoyed the series.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book Oh this story of Gracen and Honor just gets better and better. It's so involved. Travelling into another time would be traumatic for a start. Trying to adapt and now it carries on. Honor coping with Gracen's father Roston. Dealing with things she will know happen but cannot reveal in case she changes history. Gracen is so patient and loving but dealing with a modern woman must be strange for him too . Plots to find information to help their cause, sailing across the sea, kidnappings that traumatise and so much more. There was so much to take in but kept me glued to every word. Very interesting reading about American History . Can't wait to read the conclusion.
Excellent book 2 in this time travel historical romance. Honor and Gracen learn more about each other, and seem to bring out the best and worst in each other at times. Jealousy, fears, love, honor, and protection of those that are important to you are all themes in this book. Family, should come first and they should look out for you, right? "You coming into my life gave me the courage to stand up to my father. To do what is right. You gave me a reason to fight." "You are my home, Honor. Far more than these walls ever were. I do not regret for a moment loving you." "I was afraid I would lose you. I can bear giving up everything so long as I have you." "Two hundred years separated us, and yet we were made for each other." Gracen is quite the romantic and Honor is brave and strong in the face of grave uncertainty and trials they faced while in France. Great story in true M.S. Parker fashion! I chose to read this book, and all views are my own and unbiased.
This is book two in the series and let me tell you, this book was amazing.
This book picks up right where book one left off, with Honor and Gracen headed back to his home to tell his father that they are married, Honor knows that this is not going to go over well with Gracen's father, but it must be done. Being back at the Lightwood home is anything but pleasant for Honor, but Gracen does not see what she is going through and their relationship is constantly tested, it is tested even further when Honor and Gracen head to Europe to try and help with the war and change the outcome of how it ends.
The twists and turns that this book takes us on will leave your head spinning and wondering how much more Honor can go through and how many more times her trust in Gracen is tested.
Cannot wait for book three, bring it on MS Parker, I need it now
The story really hots up in book two. It seems not only Gracen's father against them. Fate seems to want to split them to. Every page I read , causes me to worry about them. So much happens to them. I liked the way M S Parker allows them to doubt each other. it gives the story a genuine feel. How can this story have a happy ending? At any moment. Honor can be transported back to the correct timeline. where does that leave Gracen? History shows how the British were defeated. How America gained its independence. Also how the need for change. Had an influence on other countries. Can love really conquer all?
I just couldn’t put down Fear and Honor. There is just something special about Gracen and Honor that keep you wanting to read on. And to hope that destiny will keep them together always and forever. But there is so much uncertainty with the war and Honor’s fear of being sent back to the time she came from. As Christmas approaches Honor is so delighted to share with Gracen her joyous news. Will he welcome the news? Or will his past misfortunes dampen the news? As always M.S. Parker outshines herself.
Honor has decided to stay in 1775 to be with her new husband, Gracen, whom she has fallen for. Gracen and Honor travel to France in attempts to help with the American war against England. Honor is held captive and this tortured for information. It isn't until after she's escaped that she and Gracen learned about the one behind her being kidnapped which shocks them both.
This is book 2 in the series. I am enjoying this story and can't wait to see how the story concludes.
Honor and Gracen are more in love then ever but when Gracen's father hears the news of there marriage he goes crazy. Gracen will do anything to keep Honor safe and knows they must leave the manor. With the adventure for Honor & Gracen gets more intense so does the danger as someone wants to tear them apart. I can't wait to read the conclusion to see what happens next for Honor & Gracen
I voluntarily reviewed this Advanced Reader Copy of this book
Gracen and Honor's journey continues in the second installment of the Lightwood Affair series. Having just been married, they return to the Lightwood Estate knowing Gracen's father will not be very happy about their union. I really enjoyed this installment. There was a lot more suspense, and more sexy time. The writing is fantastic and the story flowed seamlessly. It's all told in Honor's POV. There is a cliffhanger and I can't wait for the third and final installment.
The 2nd installment of Honor & Gracen is even better than the 1st. It is much more suspenseful, much more interesting, and much, much hotter than part 1!! This is not the typical M.S Parker story, and at times I have issues staying interested as they are not my preference, but in true M.S. Parker fashion, her writing and storyline, find a way to captivate my attention, even when I do not want it to.
This series just gets better and better, I couldn't put it down once I started. I love M.S Parker. I love Honor and Gracen, I enjoy reading about them This one was hotter, and it keeps you on your toes, I can't wait to find out what happens next. A must read series!!
This was ok, characters were good but some editing mistakes and so much same sex scenes which frankly could have been done in one book instead of three. I am reading the third one to see how this ended as I have read both others.
