An underrated gem!

Kill Devil Falls has all the ingredients for the perfect thriller, an isolated town, a large cast of memorable (creepy) characters, and many twists and turns along the way. While being fun and fast paced, it was also very atmospheric! I really enjoyed the writing style and how the amount of detail was added to each scene. Reading this book felt like watching a movie, isn’t that the best kind?

I loved this story and have zero complaints. And the scene in the basement… that will be sticking in my mind for a while. Eek!

Kill Devil Falls isn’t somewhere you’d want to end up stranded. The life went out of Kill Devil Falls years ago, when the mining stopped, when its water supply was contaminated and the sink holes started swallowing up the real estate. Kill Devil Falls is a hellhole, a ghost town, and only the faintest embers of its soul are still flickering.

Into this situation strides US Marshall Helen, come to transport white-trash Rita from the jailhouse to county court after Rita and her beau ripped up the road in a series of highway robberies. But before Helen can cuff her securely in the back seat of the prowler and head back down the snowy mountains, her car’s incapacitated – and then people start dying. Helen’s on her own against unknown perp/s who want to steal Rita’s swag and keep their own sordid secrets securely under wraps…

In no time flat, KDF becomes a die-by-the-numbers hunt-n-hide. Peripheral characters come and go in grisly cameos. Author Klingborg plays it smart with his in-bred backwoods cast of creeps, so you’re never quite sure who might be a real deviant psycho killer, and who’s just opportunistic scum with an eye on the main chance (or Helen’s ass. Or both). They’re all equally threatening.

Helen herself doesn’t get much in the way of character development. Helen’s role is to run away, fight back, be plucky, make some dumb moves and uncover the true evil in the town.

Kill Devil Falls relies on breathless continual motion to maintain its momentum and sense of tension. It’s not one of those dark, brooding backwoods noir novels which oozes nerve-shredding atmosphere. There are some gruesome moments, and some well-choreographed action sequences, but we’re a long way from Clarice Starling and psychological thrillers of that ilk.

A fast-paced read, easy to get into but kinda like a grande cappuccino: mostly froth.

Set in an 'almost abandoned' mining town-- this novel is a form of the Locked Room Mystery-- with a cast of about 10 characters and a "whodunnit" murder. It is a suspenseful page turner, however the author keeps the story fun with the unique actors: two bank robbers, three hillbillies, a retired Hollywood couple, a father-son sheriff team and a US Marshall to save them all (hopefully.) The story gets moving quickly and doesn't slow down until it reaches a satisfying conclusion. Descriptions such as "adrenaline ride" and "pulse pounding" actually apply here!

This is the kind of story where one person faces multiple attempts on her life in a very short period of time, attempting to beat off all of her adversaries. That person is U.S. Marshall, Helen Morrissey. She's been sent to the remote Sierra Nevadan mountain town of Kill Devil Falls, a virtual ghost town, to pick up a prisoner. There are very few residents of this town, which is riddled with sink holes caused by the gold mines under the mountains. Those few remaining residents have uniquely oddball reasons for being there, and none of them are good (neither the people nor the reasons).

The prisoner is only the first to die, as Helen fights off an ever dwindling number of residents as they try numerous means of killing her. There's not much time for characterization, although each of the nasty characters is nasty in his or her own way. Helen is a bad ass tough cop, and that's about all the characterization we get for her.

However, the strength of this book (beyond its non-stop plot, if that appeals), is the description of the setting. Kill Devil Falls is a rural, poisoned and condemned town, surrounded and undermined by holes in the ground put there by desperate men hoping to find riches of gold. In the midst of the mayhem, Klingborg describes the town so well that the reader feels as though they've just come back from a visit to the deserted town. It's not a particularly pleasant place to visit, but at least we got there before it disappeared completely.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for providing a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book. It hooked me from the start and kept me turning the pages until the surprising end. The main character was refreshing and unpredictable. She's the kind of heroine we need a lot more of in books today. Brain Klingborg's writing is sophisticated, clear and well crafted. His descriptive abilities brought me straight into this dark, mysterious Northern California town. The bizarre and mercurial inhabitants kept me fumbling in the dark along side them! A page turner and refreshing. I look forward to the next one...

Dark and twisted plot with creepy, well-developed characters and a spooky ghost town with a badass woman marshall. A suspenseful page-turner that leaves you hoping for another installment of Marshall Morrisey v. The Bad Guys!

A depressing setting, but a great action-packed story. I am usually not overly fond of such places which would grad down my mood a lot, but I soon got lost in the story trying to find along with Helen who the killer was. The reveal was a surprise, I've gotta say.

vivid details.. reads like an action packed suspense filled detective movie. Witty dialogue that makes the story fly by - much to my chagrin, because now that I am done, I can't look forward to picking the book up to continue living out the trials of Marshall Helen Morissey. Must read if you say yes to any of the below: been to California (especially areas that were clearly influenced by the gold rush culture), enjoyed FX's "Justified" - and that genre, like irreverent humor, enjoy a good book - that uses words to tell a story rather than being pretentious, LOVE a twist at the end of an already good book - then you must read this book. You'll love it!

An ingenious thriller. Intricately twisted with deliciously sinister characters and one of the best heroines I've encountered in the mystery/thriller genre. Brilliantly constructed and consistently absorbing. Kept me on edge until the last page. I raced through it.

Kill Devil Falls by Brian Klingborg is set in the Northern California gold country in a small former mining town with only a few current residents. US Marshall Helen Morrissey is tasked with the job of transporting a prisoner from the town of Kill Devil Falls to Sacramento. It turns out to be a lot more than anyone expected. There is good foreshadowing of events and the careful reader will pick up on some of the plot twists. All is not what it seems to be as the story develops. This could be the first of a series and makes a good start.

U.S. Marshal Helen Morrissey travels to tiny, remote Kill Devil Falls in the Sierra Nevada mountains to transport a prisoner. Rita Crawford and her boyfriend, Lee Larimer. Robbed credit unions and convenience stores across Southern California. Then, she took the loot and left him high and dry. Rita is in jail in Kill Devil Falls. Larimer is on the hunt. Not many people will survive.

I picked up this book because I really enjoyed Thief of Souls and Wild Prey by Brian Klingborg. I flew through this book. I love the characters, the story plot and the ending. As a member of a law enforcement family this book was right up my alley. I love strong female characters. Great book!

I received a copy of this from the publisher through NetGalley to review.

KILL DEVIL FALLS by Brian Klingborg tells the story of U.S. Marshal Helen Morrissey who goes to a place not even on the map named Kill Devil Falls to retrieve a fugitive named Rita who along with her partner Lee Larimer have pulled off a string of robberies and made off with a large sum over time.
Rita is a tough lady, and although showing the wear and tear of being on the run is still attractive to those in the small community where it is revealed she has hailed from.
Big Ed is the sheriff, and Teddy is the deputy at the makeshift jail at the time Helen arrives.
Teddy tells Helen that Big Ed is out on a call for a reported shooting at a nearby community.
Helen completes the necessary forms to take custody of Rita only to discover that her car will not start, and from there things start to go off the rails.
Brian Klingborg has written what appears to be his first published novel, and I was a little concerned at first when Helen the lead character is driving and listening to self-help tapes with a strong feminist view pushing anti-male sentiments, but she scoffs at some of the things said on the tapes.
Male characters come off as stupid, weak, cruel, perverted, etc. which seemed a little one dimensional, but right from the start the action and storyline were solid and I stayed with it until I realized basically it was pretty much Helen alone against the entire small community with no ability to travel or make contact with anyone outside of Kill Devil Falls. Helen has to overcome almost impossible obstacles just to survive, and her priorities change constantly as she faces danger from all directions.
Kill Devil Falls is a strong first novel for author Brian Klingborg, and it is an action packed story with a lot of twists and turns along the way making it easy to maintain interest as things get more and more out of control throughout the book.

Oh my god where to even begin with this amazing book.
I honestly can’t remember where I heard about this book but it’d been on my Amazon wish list for the longest time. It’s quite unfortunate because in this case I’d have loved to have supported the author with my purchase but it was only available via a used buying option! It must not be in publication anymore which is a giant shame because this book deserves a TON of recognition! It’s a damn thrill ride!!

First things first, the main character, Helen Morrissey. BADASS! Helen is a U.S. Marshal tasked with picking up a prisoner who is needing to be transported. Due to a massive coincidence everything goes to hell almost immediately for Helen. She finally makes it to where the prisoner is located, the title of the book, Kill Devil Falls, and in time everything starts to go from bad to worse. All of the oddball characters introduced in this derelict town are incredibly memorable to the point that one shouldn't have any problem keeping track of who's who.

I had some ideas of what to expect and who might be behind everything that starts happening as the book goes on but it eventually ended up being surprise after surprise! The last 20-30 pages, classically, revealed the true workings of everything that’d been happening and I have to say that all of it was so cleverly put together. Bravo, Brian Klingborg!!

The writing is top notch! It sucks you into the story and to give you an idea of how enraptured I was I read the last 150 pages over the course of a couple hours. I just couldn’t stop as the tension began ramping up more and more. The descriptive action scenes and the way Helen handled herself in every situation was not only badass but inspiring as well! She’s a force to be reckoned with and a very well written character!

Even though it’s highly unlikely to find this book at a public library or officially for sale, I highly recommend seeking it out via a used book selling outlet. While I feel bad that I couldn’t support the author with this purchase I hope this review will help in landing this book in someone else’s hands so someone else can enjoy this incredible story!!!

Partial spoilers ahead!!!!!! But nothing too serious.

This story wraps up neatly and while I have my doubts that there will be another adventure with Helen Morrissey, I can only hope!! To see this character again would be an absolute treat!!

US Marshall Helen Morrissey is assigned to collect a bank robber from remote town but things don't go as normal. Firstly her car starts to go wrong as she navigates the mountain road to Kill Devil Falls which exists due to a non existent gold rush. As she reaches town things go from bad to worse and is forced to stay overnight due to car failure. What follows is a good story of the depths people will be driven too by greed. Can Helen survive the night and get out with her charge. This is a full on story with action from the start to finish, a little predictable in places but does not detract from the overall enjoyment. This is what happens when the rest of the world forgets that a places exists.

If it's possible to write a post-apocalyptic version of Wrong Turn meets Scooby Doo, this could be it. And frankly, I found it ... fun.

Fun characters, good story line, plenty of suspense and action. Bring your healthy suspension of disbelief and your willingness to accept a balls-to-the-wall, all-out, semi-ridiculous, but somehow satisfying ending and a body count slightly higher than the average Scooby Doo episode, and you'll enjoy this book.

You might not think it was the greatest book you've ever read, but you'll enjoy it.

I won the ARC from Goodreads giveaway.

Highway 49 in California traverses the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. The author selected a fictional berg that is part of the old gold country. A Federal Marshal who is sent to the town to collect a fugitive ends up in a frightening series of events. I had a hard time putting this one down.

A decent well written thriller especially for a first novel. The star of the show is the ominous feeling that is created. I thoroughly recommend his other books.

KILL DEVIL FALLS, how could I not read a book by that name? However, I quickly discovered that it suffered from TMI - too much information. It felt as though the author had need to describe in detail minor things in order to stretch the book out.

Some of the plot was a bit hard to swallow. Kill Devil Falls is a condemned town in California's gold country, yet people continue to live there. At this point, 20% into the book, I'm curious about where the storyline could go but but unsure if the author can take the book to a satisfying conclusion.

Reading further, it just seemed like a good idea got twisted. I think many would enjoy this type of story but it just wasn't my style.

The publisher gave me a copy of KILL DEVIL FALLS in exchange for my review.

This is a very unique novel in that its plot is completely unpredictable. It develops in a way that has the reader piecing the elements together as the storyline unfolds. There are a lot of twists and turns that make this page turner hard to put down!! The cast of characters is terrific, incredibly well-drawn and engaging. Brian Klingborg definitely captures one's attention; and was a pleasure to read and enjoy.
