The setting for this series of narratives is the Northern Crusades, a fascinating and particularly brutal period within the generally bloody history of the Crusades. Unlike the well documented and frequently fictionalized crusades in the Mediterranean region, little attention has been paid to the crusades in the Baltic region. They were initiated and strongly supported by the Popes of that period and drew fighting men from all of Europe. The original intent of the crusades was to Christianize the Baltic peoples who at the beginning of the XII-th century were still adamantly pagan. Over time, however, they degenerated into straightforward genocidal campaigns to acquire lands and serfs. Several orders of knightly monks participated in the prolonged war, of these the most prominent was the Teutonic Order of Holy Mary of Jerusalem. The members of this order were drawn from the noble or knightly class and had to be of German birth. They succeeded in completely exterminating the Prussian people, and expropriated not only their land, but also their name. After over 200 years of bitter struggle only the Lithuanians and Samogitians remained unconquered and pagan. They accepted Christianity on their own terms at the beginning of the XV-the century.

Skomantas (vėliau – Tvermė) – leidykla; be to, Lietuvos viduramžių istorijos tematika Kazio Almeno, vėliau prie jo prisijungusių rašytojų grupė.

Apysakos apie XIII a. žemaičių didikų šeimos nuotykius, slapyvardis. Idėja sukurti tokius pasakojimus kilo norint sukurti Lietuvai herojinį epą, kurio lietuviai niekad neturėjo. Visas pasakojimas yra glaudžiai susijęs su tikrais įvykiais tuometinėje Lietuvoje.

Knygose pasakojami žemaičių rikio Žybarto ir jo žmonos Medeinos 5 vaikų – Daubaro, Jundos, Uvio, Einiaus ir Gailės – nuotykiai. Svarbiausias daugelio serijos knygų veikėjas – Uvis.

Pasakojimai ne tik apima įvairius Lietuvos regionus, bet ir Latvijos, Rusijos, kitų tautų žemes, su kuriomis Lietuvos ir Žemaitijos gentys XIII a. kovojo ir prekiavo.

Vaikystės mylimiausia knygų serija :). Suaugus jau gal ir neberekomenduočiau, bet vaikams/paaugliams - visada. Žavingi veikėjai, įdomus siužetas, aplinka. Visa, ko reikia užaugti žmogum besižavinčiu Lietuvos istorija.

Ok, perskaičiau ir suaugus. Ne, vis tik ir dabar labai gera knyga. Skaitysiu Skomanto seriją iš naujo.

I'd say it's not easy to sell historical fiction to me, but I ended up enjoying this far more than I expected. While the pacing sometimes frustrated me, the overall plot of the book is captivating enough to keep the reader going. Even though, the story benefits from being shorter rather than longer. Uvis is not exactly the protagonist I wanted to follow, but I enjoyed his progress nonetheless. One disappointing for me was, though, that most of the story is happening in a foreign city, but the way the plot is structured, it entices to pick up the second book in the series.

Overall, a well rounded read for the younger audience, albeit I would suggest reading it in original Lithuanian if possible, because translation of this edition is far too riddled with flaws and typos.

Toliau tęsiu audioknygų klausymą. Šis įrašas darytas 1995 metais Silpnaregių draugijos. Nėra galimybių net lyginti prieš tai buvusias Harry Dresden knygas su šiuo įgarsinimu. Jis klaikus.
Rikio Žybarto sūnūs Uvis bei Daubaras medžioja ir yra pagaunami vokiečių Bardo, Kercės ir Henkės. Daubaras pabėga, tačiau Uvis ištremiamas į Rygą. Prieš tai aprašomas Žiemgalių pilies puolimas. Tai ko gero ir buvo geriausia knygos vieta, o jai skirtas tik vienas skyrius. Toliau daugiau negu pusė knygos skirta Uvio gyvenimui Rygoje ir Beatai - Kercės dukrai. Geriau jau autorius būtų rašęs apie Beatą, iš esmės apie ją ir sukasi visa istorija. Žodžiu, galiausiai Uvį perperka cirko savininkas ir berniukas išvyksta iš Rygos.
Kas blogai? Jeigu žmonės stengiasi sukurti epinį pasakojimą apie Lietuvos praeitį ir jos didvyrius, tai kodėl tada rašomi apsakymai vaikučiams? Paprasta nuotykių knygutė. Jeigu ji būtų ne apie Lietuvą - graužtų sąžinė, kad skaičiau.
Kas gerai? Sekama gerais užsienio rašytojų pavyzdžiais, kuomet jaunas protagonistas pakliūna į keblias situacijas, tačiau išmoksta kažko naujo, sustiprėja ir pasiruošia ateities nuotykiams.

I didn't know what to expect from this little book that I found on my bookshelf. A programme on TV on Icelandic tales and Nordic warrior stories reminded me I had bought a book in a shop in Vilnius some years ago- so I sought it out.
It surprised me as a captivating legend and is among a series of mythical tales. The only draw back for me was the inconsistent and irritating American spellings which I didn't expect to find and the very poor editing.Full of spelling errors and small misprints.
Wouldn't put me off reading the rest of the stories. When will I be back in Lithuania however??? MAYBE IF THEY WIN THE EUROVISION this weekend!!
