Author and licensed parent and family educator Lori Wildenberg offers practical grace- and truth-filled ways of navigating your relationship with a detoured child—whether they are rejecting faith, dabbling in sin, or wholeheartedly embracing sinful behavior. There is hope. After all, their struggle isn’t really with you—it’s with God.
“I really loved Messy Journey. I expect it will help thousands of families. It is full of real life heart wrenching stories, prodigal son and daughter stories, with amazing real life God answers. I was moved to tears as parents and children shared their hearts. In this rapidly changing world we, as God’s children, need to understand and live God’s plan to its fullest. This book will help you to do that. When you desperately need God it is time to fall on your knees, with your face to the ground in prayer, and let Him know how much you need Him. To God be all the glory!”
This book is real, practical and encouraging. Raising teens and young adults is tricky even when things go according to plan. And really, how often does life follow our script? Whether or not there is a rebellious child in your life, this book is a helpful resource for understanding, supporting and reaching out to families in crisis. Personally, "Messy Journey" provided tools for navigating the relationships with my adult kids, who aren't rebellious but certainly have their own ideas.
Author and parenting expert, Lori Wildenberg describes her book this way: "Messy Journey: How Grace and Truth Offer the Prodigal a Way Home" is for parents walking the difficult road with a wayward child. This book is filled with stories from dozens of Christian parents and some prodigals. It includes my personal journey with my same-sex attracted daughter. The book is vulnerable and honest. No matter why a parent has a prodigal (or if you love someone who does) this book will bring comfort, help, and encouragement. Practical grace- and truth-filled ways of navigating a relationship with a detoured child who is rejecting faith, dabbling in sin, or wholeheartedly embracing sinful behavior are given. There is hope. "
“In reading Messy Journey, I felt I was sitting with a good friend who really understood. So many words met me right where I am on this journey, and confirmed my faith and trust in a Sovereign Lord. One of my biggest struggles has been to watch my son fight against God, since I know He is the only answer. Lori’s words gave me the okay to be patient and let Him do the work. It is not my job to bring my son to faith in the One, True God. That's between him and The Lord. Thanks for reminding me of this.” Kathie Hamby
Highly recommend this book to any parent with a prodigal. It affirmed what I have been doing and guided me with truth on what I need to start doing. Will be recommending this to anyone that comes to me facing issues with a child going down a path not pleasing to God.
I am voluntarily reviewing a copy of Messy Journey through New Hope Publishers and Netgalley:
Lori Wildenberg reminds us in this book that life is not a straight line. We are reminded that Jesus does not want us to fear but to be grave, which can be hard if you are a parent with a child in the throws of a full fledged rebellion.
When children disclose their situation, their lack of faith, or whatever rebellion they are in the throws off parents will often act like a deer in the headlights. The author points out too that we can accept another person without agreeing with them.
The examples in this book talk about everything from Sexuality, to lack of faith, to mental health issues. Many different types of rebellion are talked about.
As a professional counselor, I was so excited to read this book! It provides biblical wisdom and practical tools for parents whose children are struggling.
We are adding it to our counseling center resource list.
