Algebraic! Don't miss Finn, Jake, and all of their friends on their biggest adventure yet! Trapped by the dreaded Lich, the guys gotta stop all of Ooo from being sucked away forever - and rescue a bunch of wayward Princesses. Luckily, no one does adventure - and looks cooler doing it - than Finn and Jake! The Cartoon Network sensation's brand new comic is the hot new series you can't afford to miss! Also includes "BACON FIELDS" and "THE RIDE OF SIR SLICER!"
I can say that there were once piles of these volumes sitting around the house, and (I just checked) three we purchased are still on the shelves (though some might still be under beds, under couches, I don't know). I read this because I am a fan of Michael DeForge's alt-comix and these weird little squiggly characters he seems to endlessly spin out of his head just basically for the hell of it, but I saw again when I recently reviewed his last book, Leaving Richard's Valley, that DeForge had logged in more than six years working for the Adventure Time comics group, and so I thought I would just have a taste of what he did there.
And I was not disappointed. DeForge's piece, "Bacon Fields" is pretty funny. There's a female character that wears bacon in her hair, and there's that field of bacon. Just because! Okay, nothing much going on here, but I began to appreciate the sort of endlessly juvenile appeal he might have to not just sophisticate hipsters but all ages. I saw how DeForge and Ryan North (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, which I thought was all right) might be linked in some ways of goofiness. North authors much of this issue I found it mildly entertaining.
So this would obviously be 2 stars for me but because my kids don't review here and they like it a lot still and because I am not the primary audience for it and it is widely popular still, I give it another star, so there.
The comic books starts to hit their stride here. The Lich is out and an usefull tool becomes a horrible weapon. Characterization and jokes are tighter than earlier issues.
