It’s 1824 Philadelphia at the opening of the Franklin Institute of Science, and one of its founders, Samantha’s father, wants her to marry his business partner, a much older man, to keep their war industry dealings secret.
Looking for a way out of the arranged marriage, tomboy Sam finds it in Eagle, the half Native American son of the man she is to marry.
Eagle brings Samantha into his spiritual world, his bimijiwan, in order that she might stop their father’s preparations for an ironclad Civil War at sea. To do this, Sam might have to convince Benjamin Franklin to abandon his kite experiment.

Samantha Ronaldson’s father tries to marry her to his old business partner to keep industrial secrets safe in family. Sam would rather pursue science. She finds a connection with Migizi, John’s half-Indian son. Migizi has the ability to travel along the Flow, essentially time travel, which Sam accompanies him. But they have bigger problems than just the arranged marriage, it seems Sam’s father is about to create a Civil War at sea and it will be up to Sam and Migizi to stop him.
After reading Entangled I was curious to see where Fly Like An Eagle was going to go. I felt for Sam, stuck in an arranged marriage to an older man yet longing for his son. I loved what a strong and defiant person Migizi was, who better than him to have the ability to travel the Flow. I really enjoyed the different people they met along their journey, this really added to the story.
This book did jump around, of course, but it was not as confusing as the first book. I do recommend reading Entangled first to have some idea of what is going to happen. I admit that I am not a fan of love triangles so the one with Sam, Migizi, and John was not very impressive to me. But if you like a lot of sex, this book does have that.
This was an interesting story and very original. I flowed well with Entangled and I hope that there are more books to come.
I received Fly Like An Eagle from Author Marketing Experts for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.
Kaaterskill Mountains, NY. Aunt Numees was telling Mr. Cole Davies (Hudson School artist/painter) Migizi (1/2 breed son, John Jr., aka Eagle, Algonquin tribe) name was while he was sketching him. 1824, Ronaldson Manor, Philadelphia, PA. Cole was going to teach Samantha ”Sam” Ronaldson (daughter, heiress, wabishka princess) the finer things of becoming an artists. A similarity of Aunt Tallulah started to appear on the canvas. Most men just wanted to lust over Sam’s beauty. They had no interest that she was very intelligent. James Ronaldson (father, FIS founder) could have thought he might make a great suitor for his daughter.
Mr. Prinn (butler) brought Sam a gift from the Vaughans. It was a painting of the ritual of the Delaware tribe. Migizi & his father Mr. John Vaughan Sr. (James’ associate) were headed to the Ronaldson Manor. The glider struggled to get off the steep incline. But the 2 of them were off. Migizi drove 1 carriage & escorted Sam to downtown Philadelphia. Aunt Tallulah, John & James were in the other 1. Chestnut St. They had excellent seats in the theatre & were going to see Shakespeare’s Othello. Why was Cole shouting at Migizi?
John & James were checking out 1 of the many factories he owned. Rymaster Empire Brandrick (English, engineer) was giving the tour. The machinery & the screeching of the metal made quite the noise. The heat off the furnace made it quite unbearable. John & James (millionaire, entrepreneur) were members of the Philadelphia Philosophical Society. The Franklin Institute housed many rooms were experiments of all size/nature were being done. Where is the C-Q time machine taking Migizi, Sam, Naomi, & Queen Electress Sophie (House of Hanover, British royalty)? Richard Stephenson (Duke of Edinburgh) welcomed Migizi into the Bertie Wells residence.
Delaware. Migizi knelt to kiss Samantha big belly, they had already named their unborn child Ashak.
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written historical fiction book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great time travel movie, animated cartoon. Well this was a different reading. That said, I enjoyed it, so I will rate it at 5 stars.

In Philadelphia, in 1824, Samantha Ronaldson’s father wants her to marry his older business partner in order to keep his industrial secrets in the family. Samantha, on the other hand, only wants the freedom to explore science, and she allies herself with the partner’s half-Indian son, Eagle, and accompanies him on a journey through the Flow, back and forth through time on an amazing journey of discovery.
Fly Like an Eagle by S.B.K. Burns is a difficult book to categorize. A steampunk, sci-fi novel, it has elements of the paranormal, as well as steamy romance, that offers a bit of everything for lovers of a variety of genres. A tantalizing romp that challenges historical and scientific truths, it explores the boundaries between science and spirituality in a thoroughly entertaining story that will grab and hold your attention from the first page to the last.
I read this book straight after reading the first book in the series, Entangled. Again, like book one, at times I was confused and had to re-read parts.
The main characters are Migizi and Sam. I liked Migizi, he was well written, but Sam, I could not connect with her at all. She seemed… I don’t know, robotic? Some of the things that happened to her, it was just like a normal day at the office. There was no curiosity from her when things were mentioned about the future, or brought back from the future. She seemed kind of flat which was disappointing.
There was lots of heat. Though I didn’t quite like the love-triangle, even though it was explained – I still didn’t like it that much I would have preferred it to be just Migizi and Sam throughout.
I won this book in the giveaways and I enjoyed. At times it was sort of hard to follow, Burns has the historical fiction mixed with romance down perfect but what threw me off was the time travelling aspect. It didn't throw me off enough to not enjoy it but I sort of thought maybe the romance and historical fiction aspects were enough as is. It was a great read though and I would recommend it.
This book is part historical fiction and part romance with a twist of time travel. It was entertaining to read about famous historical figures throughout the story. As much as I enjoy the concept of time travel, I think it must be a difficult plot to write. Most time travel stories are a bit confusing, this one included. I received this ebook as a goodreads giveaway.
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for review.
I loved the cover of this book, and it's probably 75% of what made me interested to read it. Beautiful colors, and both main characters were represented well.
Migizi, our hero, was written very nicely. There were no native stereotypes here. In tune with his biracial heritage, he was a great blend of native and white settler aspects. The author drew a great picture in regards to his living in the white man's world--which is where he wanted to be--while still trying to hold on to parts of his mother's culture. He blended science with The Flow, inventions with traditional rituals. It was very interesting.
Ultimately, the heroine, Sam, decreased my enjoyment of the book. She was so frustratingly passive in pretty much everything. Without trying to spoil too much, she was kidnapped at one point and had some terrible things done to her. She honestly showed basically no trauma afterward. The things she endured, while not necessarily traumatic in today's world, were unspeakably atrocious in her time. It would have ruined her image in society if it was found out. Yet, she wasn't really concerned. She was perfectly willing to sit back and take it for Migizi (he didn't know it was happening to her). She barely knew Migizi at this point. Also, whenever Migizi mentioned things as being from the future, she was just like oh ok! I mean .....??? Aren't you confused about how he has this healing ointment from the future? With how well Migizi was written, I found Sam to be a disappointment.
Overall, I enjoyed parts of this book, but it's probably not something I would read again just because of Sam's character.
I love time travel in romance books. This one had a different feel to it which was nice. Migizi and Samantha have great chemistry and steamy spots in the book. I thought the book was well written and had a nice steady pace.
What attracted me to Fly Like an Eagle was the cover. I absolutely loved it. You have the heroine with her back to the hero, who is in full Native American attire. Above them, is a hang glider (which does have a major part in the story) and next to the title is a small picture of who I am going to assume is Electress Sophie. Normally I really don’t pay attention to the cover’s but this one caught my eye. I mean look at it. Migizi is almost defiant looking, which goes 100% with his character in the story. Samantha is trying to act demure but you can see her looking at Migizi out of the corner of her eye….like she is almost afraid to look him. If I saw this in the store, with this cover, I would be buying it.
The science fiction element of the book was fantastic. I will admit, that during the time travel scenes (where they used the flow to run time machines), I did have visions of Doctor Who popping up. But that aside, if I were to picture time travel, this makes the most sense to me. The reason it made sense to me….well because it was found (note that I said found not founded) by a mathematician. I also liked that there were people who could travel the Flow naturally. Migizi was one of them and it went with his native American roots. Except it wasn’t called the Flow, it was called bimijiwan and it was revered by Migizi’s Delaware clan.
I really liked the steampunk elements of the book too. I think I would have acted like Samantha if I had to go to Piscatawnia. I mean, you have people dressed like you have never seen them dressed before (corsets worn over dresses, watch fobs as accessories) and then you have all the machines flying around. It was awesomely wonderful. I also like how certain famous missing people showed up in the book and how it was explained how they got there.
The romance part of the book was pretty standard. I didn’t like, though, that there was a love triangle, of sorts, between Migizi, Samantha, and John (Migizi’s father). To be honest, it creeped me out….even though it was explained that the marriage was to be in name only. I do think that maybe it should have been just Migizi and Samantha from the get go. Other than that, I thought the love story between Samantha and Migizi was sweet. The sex, which there was a lot of…both were insatiable, was pretty hot too.
I liked the appearances of historical figures in the book. Ben Franklin definitely gave the last part of the book that “oomph” it needed and he was hilarious to boot. The whole scene where he was talking to Samantha’s father and Migizi’s father and giving advice about the ladies. Oh lordy….I was dying laughing.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading the book but you do need to read book 1 first.
