Chloe is Catholic, a cop, and conventional, not necessarily in that order. But when a run-of-the-mill burglary arrest goes bad, she ends up dead. Turns out there are worse things than having a bra that doesn’t fit right.
When she wakes up alive–yeah, she’s as surprised as you are–she keeps seeing people her friends can’t see. She can’t get those people to talk to her, though, and one of them looks hauntingly familiar, even though it’s no one Chloe actually knows.
A handsome Indiana State Trooper with secrets of his own tells her that her would-be killer is tied to an open robbery case. While they work together to bring a relentless killer to justice, Chloe has increasingly disturbing encounters with the shades only she can see.
She finally realizes her death (and subsequent resurrection) has given her a connection to the restless dead of Indianapolis, and with a recent homicide rate over a hundred a year, there are a lot of restless dead in Indianapolis. What’s a conventional, Catholic cop to do?
Catch the crook, get the guy, and say a few Hail Marys just to be safe.
Stephanie A. Cain writes epic and urban fantasy. She lives in Indiana and works at a small liberal arts college. She enjoys hiking, reading, singing, and general geekery. She has three cats, which she is well aware puts her firmly in crazy cat lady territory, and way more dice and painted miniatures than she needs.
This is a very promising beginning to what looks to be an interesting series.
The author does, generally, a good job of overlaying the paranormal elements onto a realistic setting. There are some big elements that were glossed over or not explained, but I would anticipate that given it kicks of a series (there have to be some things left to reveal in future installments).
I found that most of the characters were well fleshed-out, which is impressive as there are a fair number of characters appearing. I especially love Chloe's sarcasm. The weakest characters were the antagonist and associates: there was definitely room to provide interesting elements that would have rendered them more fully. (I'm quite disappointed that a certain master/servant-tinged relationship was not explored - this was a missed opportunity to provide some major insight and sneak in some potentially tragic background).
There was a section that got a little bit preachy for me - I think there are more effective ways to convey Chloe's spiritual angst than the drawn-out scene I recall reading. Moreover, this seemed to be a bit of a dangling thread - it didn't really move the story along, although I will concede that it could be groundwork for a future installment. Otherwise, the plot moves along at a very good clip, making it a fairly exciting read.
The climax and denouement came across as being a bit rushed. I also found this was a bit predictable and straightforward.
Overall, this was a solid, enjoyable read, and I would definitely be interested in reading more from this series.
I received a copy of this book through Voracious Readers Only.
Absolutely loved this wonderful fantasy! The main character is incredible and had me hooked from the start! I received a free copy from the author through Voracious Readers Only and cannot wait to read more from Stephanie A. Cain!
Not my normal reading genre, but enjoyable and fast-paced enough that I read it in just a few days. Will try to post a more detailed review on my blog soon. Very much enjoyed the fact that the action took place in my home town of Indy, and that many of my favorite landmarks and restaurants make an appearance in the story.
Shades of Circle City is the first in an urban fantasy series with elements of the paranormal.
Chloe died after she was shot. Ok, so it was only for three minutes but she still died. It seems, however, that she brought something back with her: the ability to see ghosts. Now you would think that as a cop that would be beneficial, but for some reason, they can’t communicate with her. And strangely enough, the guy who shot her is now haunting her. But he didn’t get killed when he shot her, so what happened? Chloe’s case gets linked to a string of other robberies where occult jewellery and books seem to be the main target. Braxton Wolfe, the cop in charge of these other cases calls Chloe in to help out and as they work closer together the inevitable feelings start to develop for each other. But how exactly is Braxton going to tell her that he is a werewolf and how is she going to tell him she sees ghosts? As they delve deeper into the world of the dead, they realise that someone out there is trying to resurrect a person. And that they will stop at nothing to do this; whether sacrificing an innocent or eliminating anyone standing in their way. A cat has nine lives but will a wolf and the woman he fell for be as lucky?
This is a great start to a series, and I enjoyed the introduction of hardheaded Chloe and her stubbornness in finding out exactly what happened in this case. Her tenacity and bravery in facing her fears was a nice reminder of real-world problems especially as it was interspersed with the inner demons of her past that she was still battling to deal with and the guilt and forgiveness associated with them. Braxton came across in the same manner. Thrust into the role of alpha after the loss of his father and still struggling to assert his dominance on certain members of the pack, Braxton must mix this in with the work caseload he has. The addition of pack members and colleagues, as well as family, allowed the story to be shared among characters without the amount of them becoming overwhelming. And I can certainly understand the anguish of losing a child and wanting to bring them back but the way Garza was trying to accomplish this screamed a loud warning of leaving the dead exactly where they were.
The editing of grammar was very good, and the one mistake I spotted surprised me as I stopped to go back and reread it. The writing style is easy to read which helps increase the pace of your reading without compromising the understanding or retention. The ending was a bit abrupt for me as when I had 15 pages to go it wasn’t quite there yet and then all of a sudden it was, but it leaves the story open to lead into book two. When you sign up to the author’s subscriber’s list you receive the prequel to this book, which I’m looking forward to reading. This looks like it’s going to be a great series.
Thanks to Voracious Readers Only and the author for a copy of the book. It’s never explicitly stated that a review must be done on receipt of the book, but as a reader, I think it’s important to give feedback when you have been gifted a copy of the author’s hard work.
Solid 3 star from me. It was good without being great.
Shades of Circle City is the first book in a series. It was a nice introduction to the world and the characters I assume you'll see a lot of in the rest of the books. The ending is satisfying and leaves an opening for sequels, if you want more. It has a nice pace that is slowed some because the reader has insight into the villain and what he's after/doing/up to. If you are from Indianapolis, you will probably enjoy hearing/seeing local, familiar sights and spots. For me, who has never been, it was kind of interesting but also a little too detailed. (Honestly, it reminded me of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series where it almost seems like filler to list every single road in New Jersey.) I really want to know more about Chloe's brother Martin and hope he gets more detailed further into the series. He sounds interesting.
And now my dislikes: I disliked the insta-love and could have done without hearing how hot Braxton is every single time his name came up.
I disliked how long it took for Chloe to realize that she saw ghosts. It is literally in the blurb and the first half of the book read more like a regular crime novel. (And an uninteresting one, looking for pawn shop robber.) Granted, you know that Braxton is a werewolf but even that seemed muted and downplayed.
This was a good opener, overall, though. I do plan to read more in the series so my dislikes weren't hates or deal breakers. I'll be back for more Chloe Cole.
A special thanks to Voracious Readers Only for the free for review copy that I received!
I loved the book. This book made me laugh, whether it was a main character or a side character. The writing is stellar. It’s clear, gripping and you just want to keep going. I’m a huge fangirl (or woman really) of the urban fantasy genre as it has flawed but powerful female characters who don’t just roll over for anyone. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book. Why are there only two in the series so far?? There is so much potential for more books.
I have to say, I also really enjoyed the internal religious battle Chloe goes through as her traditional Catholic values are challenged by the changing cast of characters in her life. I’m very picky when it comes to religion and I try to avoid preachy stuff almost at all costs. However, I thoroughly enjoyed her debate between rational Catholic ideology and the introduction of the supernatural elements. The content of the debate is not preachy and does not advocate for one or the other, but takes a ‘rational’ but common sense approach to understanding the changes to her and those around her. I’m a fan.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Voracious Readers Only in exchange for a unbiased review. I have read a few books in this genre (urban fantasy/crime) and this novel compares favourably to these. The story starts with a bang and there is no long drawn out prose that makes you wonder why you every picked the book up in the first place - the action is fast paced enough to keep you hooked but not so much that you find yourself loosing track of what exactly is going on. The main characters are interesting although not entirely unique - I've encountered a few cops who can see ghosts and werewolves in law enforcement before, nevertheless their take on the situations they are placed in work work within the narrative. The setting (Indianapolis) is a welcome change to the usual US big cities and it was nice to be introduced to a different area of the country, certainly if by the end of a novel I am imagining a visit to the locale in real life then its a thumb's up from me. The start of a series that I am most definitely interested in continuing with.
If you're from Indianapolis, you'll like this book. Likely your favorite dish at your favorite restaurant is mentioned, and you'll recognize other landmarks. I am not from Indianapolis. The author packs a lot into one little novel, combining supernatural fantasy, crime thriller, and romance all in one. The writing is quality, if not inspired, well researched and organized, and the story moves along at a nice pace. There's no real lovely imagery, no deep character transformation, nothing that evokes strong feelings. The characters are emotionally distant, both from each other and from the reader. The ending wraps their relationships up a bit too quickly, tied with a bit too neat of a bow. There's an obvious series-prompting cliffhanger, but it has enough of an ending not to make that annoying. It's not a thought provoking work of literature. It will not move you deeply, but it's a decent little story with some original twists that can keep you company on sleepless nights or long flights.
This was a mixture of Crime and fantasy and it is done so well I was gripped from the very beginning. Chloe is a cop who gets herself shot and dies in the ambulance but she waked up very much alive with the help of the paramedics. You would think that is the worst thing to happen to her but she just seems to hit one thing after another. When a state trouper introduces himself to her as he thinks her shooting is by the same people he is chasing for random robberies she finds herself teaming up with him to find the culprit. What Chloe doesn't know is that he is the leader of a lycanthrope (werewolf) pack which would really not go down well with the conventional catholic but then who knows as she seems to have a side affect of dying in the ambulance. This along with well defined characters that are easy to follow it makes for an explosive book. I can't wait for the second book, thank you to voracious readers for my copy of the book.
There’s a lot to like about this novel. The main character is a credible police officer who has to deal with being injured in the line of duty and having her house burnt down early in the book. The mystery is pretty well laid out. The author lets the reader know a lot more than the protagonist does and so we get the pleasure of watching her uncover the connections that will lead her to the criminal. One of the supernatural elements—the ghosts—is also nicely crafted and sets the tone of the story quite nicely. My only real complaint is the pack of werewolves who seem more like people who can turn into animals than lycanthropes living on the edge desperately trying to control their wild animalistic natures. There is, to be fair, talk of the need for control, but it never seemed convincing to me. This isn’t enough to wreck the novel, but it was enough to keep it from getting five stars.
I received this book in exchange for a review through Voracious Readers Only. Shades of Circle City by Stephanie A. Cain is an intriguing urban fantasy novel. Chloe Cole is a cop who gets shot while trying to stop a robbery, dies, and comes back with the ability to see ghosts. Braxton Wolfe is trying to catch the person behind these robberies, and he’s also a werewolf. Victor Garza is a defense attorney who is trying to bring his daughter back from the dead after she dies in a car crash. This cast of characters, together with the shift between their perspectives throughout the novel, showcase a well-rounded, thrilling novel. There is a variety of supernatural characters that blend together so well. Ghosts, werewolves, and magic users add a whole new level to this fast paced adventure. I cannot wait to see what these characters get up to in the future.
I received this book from Voracious Readers for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book. I loved seeing how Chloe came to accept her new "power" and the love story between her and Braxton. I know this is the first book featuring Chloe and she is a fairly well developed character. Braxton is also fairly well developed. I would like to see more about his background and how he got to where he is with his pack, not the leader because that is fairly well stated, but more about the history of the pack and how the various members came to join the pack. That may follow in further books, but who knows. I would have liked to see more in regards to the loss experienced during the book. I also feel the main part of the story could have been a bit more fleshed out. Otherwise it was a good book and I look forward to looking for further books in the series.
I got this as a present and read it recently on a plane ride. It's a simple, fun story with nice characterization and an enjoyable plot. I think the author does a nice job of balancing the voices of the two primary characters and her male lead is nicely balanced and fun to read in particular. This book suffers a little bit from some timing issues and balance (there's a lot of names to learn all at once without a lot to hold onto and some details that overwhelm a few scenes), which took it down from a 5 to a 4, but I whole heartedly recommend it as a fun read. I'm looking forward to the second book and recommended it to several other friends. If you're from the Midwest and Indiana in particular, be sure to snap it up and look for some familiar names/places!
I received a free copy of this book through VovaciousReadersOnly. I'm always wary about starting new books even though it's the genre I like but I have to say this book was really intriguing. It was a definite page turner I couldn't put the book down, I liked how the writer was able to make it easy for the reader to read and delve into the story. The only thing I disliked about it is I feel like the story ended too soon, the author left you suspense all the way up until a few chapters, I felt like the ending was predicable. However, I would definitely read the next book in this series of there is/will be one to see what happens to Chloe next.
Chloe is catholic, A cop and sees dead people. This book was a great introduction to the series.
The characters were very well fleshed out and all have great personality's especially Chloe's sarcasm, It was a definitely a page turner that I could't put down. It was a great mix of crime mystery and supernatural with a dash of romance.
The only thing I disliked was the part about her daughter I feel it was a bit dragged out but overall didn't ruin the book for me
Special Thanks to Stephanie A.Cain and Voracious Readers Only for the complimentary copy of this novel.
I received this book through #VoraciousReaders and i was pleasantly surprised by the writer's skill and craft. For my first experience of this author's writing, this story drops you into the thick of things right away, you identify with the heroes pretty much as soon as you meet them. This is a well crafted novel which touches on the supernatural and weaves an engaging tale, that leaves you satisfied but at the same time wanting more...
How bad could your day get.... Chloe started with problems with her bra and ended up dead.....but her troubles don't stop there.. ..this book has you trying to solve the case with her ....if it was a film you would be shouting at the screen to help her.... A heroine that you really root for and find you can't put the book down until the end. Great read...not my normal genre but I am hooked on this author now.
I was definitely intrigued by the mix of conventional spirituality with what could be considered mystical spirituality. To be honest, I really wasn't sure I was going to like it when I started reading but once I got into it - I couldn't put it down... finished it in a little more than a day! I enjoyed the camaraderie that is built between the characters. Looking forward to reading the other books!
Although i received a complimentary copy of this book from the author through voracious readers only, I loved it from the very start and was sad when i finished it. Chloe Cole is my new favourite cop and i could have read her story for hours more. The story is very well written, and engaging from the first page and combines my favourite things - murder mystery, fantasy and a strong female character.
The combination of cops and werewolves intrigues me and led me to this book, which is the first urban fantasy I've ever read. I honestly wasn't sure about the book during the first few pages, and it took more than 50 pages to draw me in. As I got deeper in the story and knew where it was going, I was hooked! As a cat lover, I was delighted when both of the main characters have pet cats! I also enjoyed how there were lines that refers to cat behaviour. I thought Chloe and Braxton's relationship is adorable and surprisingly, believable, given the circumstances. I genuinely enjoyed reading this book. This is the first book of a series and I want to read more. I would recommend this to those who likes to read urban fantasy. Thank you to Voracious Readers Only for sending me a copy!
Honestly it did not leave a huge impression on me. I did love the main characters personality and adorably awkward attraction to Braxton. I did like that in a split second she is engulfed into the world of the occult. It would be interesting to see where she ends up in the end. I do think people who enjoyed Buffy the vampire slayer should give this story a shot. I received this copy in exchange for an honest review.
I met this author at a Ren Faire in New Castle, and I liked her right away. Her upbeat personality really shines in this crime fiction/urban fantasy set in Indianapolis. She had me loving her main character right away, and the prose never got boring, even through the middle. I am looking forward to reading more in this original paranormal series.
I received this bok from Stephanie Cain through Voracious Readers Only, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were well developed with just the right amount of complexity for the story. It was a page turner and I did not want to put it down once I started reading it.
I haven't read this style of book for a few years, but the synopsis caught my attention I was confused by the prologue and found it a little slow, but once i got to about the second or third chapter I was hooked and had a hard time putting the book down
I had this as a free read and I am leaving this review of my own choosing
I picked this book up as a free read not my usual reading but wow I am glad I did ghost, werewolves, magic it has the lot the plot is great and is easy reading loved it will read more by Stephanie A Cain.
Fast paced action packed to the max. Supernatural, mystery, crime and romance all rolled up into a great book! Book given free by author via voraciousreadersonly.
Hooked from Page 1 I thoroughly enjoyed reading this Book I received as complimentary copy book from the author via Voracious Readers. I can't wait to continue reading series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Voracious Readers I love this genre and this book stands up against some of my favorites, am looking forward to the rest of the series
