The Jerk Next Door

Rate this book
There was a naked man sprawled across my front yard. Not half naked. Not metaphorically naked. Literally stark, bare-butt naked. Single, lacking cooking skills, and too awkward to function, Isla Matthews is content to spend her nights alone, curled up on the couch with her cat. When she's not knee-deep in the personal lives of her embarrassingly zany friends, she can be found struggling to keep afloat the cute, little flower shop her parents left her after their deaths. Having thrown aside her dreams of being an artist, Isla's almost convinced herself she's happy with her safe, comfortable routine. That is until a super-hot, Australian man shows up naked in her front yard—her new neighbor, Leo Wayland. As far as Isla's concerned, Leo is the stuff that neighbor nightmares are made of. An irritating, free spirit with no boundaries, he eats her food, uses her hot water, and, worst of all, saunters around shirtless, causing her to have all kinds of inappropriate thoughts about him. But as much as Leo rubs her the wrong way, Isla can't deny that he is filling up her lonely nights with his annoying smirks, making her laugh again, and daring her to change, one day at a time. Maybe, just maybe, Leo Wayland is exactly the smoldering intervention Isla needs to get her life back on track...

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT AND A RANT - BEWARE

Okay, I get it, he's a jerk. But did he have to be an a**hole? There's a big difference between an a-hole and a jerk. I mean, all I read come out of his mouth was disparaging comments, and some name calling. Wasn't he supposed to like Isla? It was a pesky annoyance in the beginning when he would put Isla down. But as I read along until 55% mark, I was full-blown p-o'd. He'd constantly say something deragatory towards her and then laughingly say, I'm just teasing you...Uh, NO.

There's always truth behind that sh*t.

It's called Passive Aggressive bull$%#t.

I mean, I get it, IF IT'S supposed to be funny but all I read between Arun, Henley, and Leo were critical comments about her life, her looks, her clothes, her life choices, her house, her damn mailbox, and even her business. I'm sure there are better way to let readers know things in Isla's life. No wonder the poor girl is a klutz. She has anxiety issues that roots deep down due to her insecurities. I would be a nervous wreck too if I'm an orphan, have friends like Arun & Henley, and a neighbor that is a creep and an a**hole.

AND what is the deal with EVERYONE IS GORGEOUS AND HOT. While, our main character, Isla is pear shaped (might as well call her fat) with a big ass, short, with drool on her cheek trope. Why can't the main character be good looking and tall. Why does she have to be short and stout. What the ever loving freakin' hell?! To top it off, she dresses like a granny. Remind me again why she's the main character?

I found two good things in Isla's life, Jac (bff)and Scott. Jac was at least not self-absorbed. All her comments weren't based about her. She was honest to Isla. But not with Thanh...poor guy. She was blatantly mean to him.
Now, Scott might have been boring but he was into Isla. He came by the store every Monday to buy expensive flowers for his mom and see Isla. He might not be the most aggressive but he was thoughtful. He didn't call her names, nor criticize her.

So, this is what I don't get, why downplay the nice guy and hype up the creep that called her names. I don't get that?

One more thing, Leo took her in a really cool date and then, Isla overheard two girls talk about over the top things he would do for girls he liked. It made Isla feel that she's nothing special. Why? Why go there? It just makes us readers hate him more. WHy couldn't he just do something nice to Isla? Why taint it by writing that he does this kind of sh*t to get laid. It was later explained that the girls were just jealous. What? That didn't answer the fact that he did do those things for those girls... to get laid.

Last thing, this one is personally just a pet peeve of mine. Leo was seen kissing Arianne passionately at his housewarming party after Isla left. I'm sure, kissing wasn't the only thing they did that night. Then again on another night, Leo kissed Arriane infront of Isla. As a reader, I get that they (Leo & Isla)weren't together yet but for the love of g*d, if he really liked Isla from the very beginning, certain readers (like me, for instance) does not want to read that type of drivel. I understand my way of thinking in real life is preposterous but in romance novels...NO. I don't want to read the main guy kissing or effing another girl when he clearly likes and pursues the main girl.

Clearly, I didn't enjoy this book. This is just my personal opinion. Although, there were some real funny moments but the whole story just didn't resonate with me. I noticed that a lot of Goodreads readers seem to have enjoyed the book and had given it 5 stars. It's just not my cup of tea.

“Neighborly?” I asked, fuming at this discovery. “You’re my neighbor?”
“Sure am, mate,” he responded with a grin. “Moved in last night.”
“Mate?” I asked a little cheekily. “Do you also drink Fosters and have a pet dingo?”

Since I had nothing to throw at him to potentially knock him out, I began wildly flinging my arms in his direction as though it would somehow prevent him from coming any closer to me.
Miraculously, he stopped in his tracks and scratched his head in confusion. “Um, are you throwing air at me?”

“Are you a murderer?”
“What?”
His words took me completely by surprise and broke me out of the spell I’d been under.
“It smells like a dead body in here,” he elaborated, glancing around the kitchen as he searched for the source of the smell.
Oh, crap. The mac and cheese.
“Bloody hell,” he remarked, peering into the sink before turning back around to look at me. “Remind me to never try your cooking.”

“That Thanh man!” she snapped, swinging her ponytail around like a lethal whip as she turned to me. “He won’t stop hitting on Henley and me.”
“He was hitting on Henley?” Arun dropped my hand and began scouring the room of dancing drunk people. “What was he saying?”
Uh oh. Was Arun about to ruin everything with his Henley suppressed feelings?
“Just ridiculous things, like if it hurt when I fell from Heaven,” Jac scoffed, her upper lip curling in disgust. “Oh, and that he must be hunting treasure because he was digging my chest.”

“Give me the phone!” Arun snapped in the background. “Listen to me carefully, Isla. Do you have your sexy talk down? Once you get in the bedroom, that’s all that matters.”
“I could improvise. I did study drama all through high school.”
“Okay, let’s hear something,” Arun prodded.
“Umm.” I wracked my brain for something that could come across as subtle, yet sexy. “What about this? I want your screwdriver in my nail socket.”
I dropped my voice to what I thought was a sultry tone. “I want your hammer in my wood pouch.”
“Wood pouch?” Jac spluttered in the background. “That’s not a real thing. Did you just make that up?”
“Oh, I put the tap in the sink.” I was relentless.
“No!” Arun gasped in horror. “Absolutely not!”
“I’m gonna hop on that pogo stick.”
“Stop it! Just stop it!” Arun chided on the other end of the line. “Maybe you should just pretend to be mute.”

“Literally,” Thanh translated in a hushed tone. “They’re chasing her out the door.”
This time I spluttered into my hand and tried to pass it off as a fit of coughing.
“What was that?” Arianne snapped, glaring at the both of us.
“Oh, nothing,” Thanh said nonchalantly, moving next to me, “I was just telling Isla that I’m so hungry I could eat a whore.”
“Excuse me?” she demanded, narrowing her eyes.
“Sorry, I meant to say horse,” he corrected smoothly, not missing a beat.

“I don’t know,” Leo said, shooting me a questioning look. “Do you want to join us, Buffy? We’re hanging out by my pool.”
Surprised by his invitation, I shook my head, dreading the idea of spending more time with Arianne and Kelley than was necessary. “I have things to do, like prune my bush.”

“Arun, seriously what the fuck are you wearing?” Henley demanded in disbelief.
“It’s my lounge wear,” he answered, strutting into the kitchen and striking several stomach churning poses. “It allows me to be stylish, yet comfortable. This is how girls do this, right?”
“You look like a Jedi stripper,” I blurted

“There’s my foreign cactus bloom.” Thanh stepped forward, grandly sweeping his hand in Jac’s direction. “Te extrano como una berenjena extrana la Luna.”
“You miss me like an eggplant misses the moon?” Jac asked, raising her perfectly shaped brows at him.
“Uh,” Thanh scratched his head. “Not what I was aiming for. Er, por favor ven y montate en mi chivo para dar una vuelta. Comeremos paja y nos divertiremos.”
“Excuse me?” Jac was growing very red in the face, like an inflatable tomato. “You want me to take a ride on your goat? And eat your what?” She stared around at the rest of us, hands on hips. “Was that supposed to be a racial stereotype joke? Are you saying Mexicans travel on goats

I haven't read a book as annoying as this one yet. I have books in which only one character annoys me or ruins the whole story. But in this one has the most annoying CHARACTERS ever!

Poor Isla...I only liked her, Jac and Thanh. The rest was a bunch of immatures and jerks.
Isla is a 25-year-old woman who is struggling to be "normal". She's on her own, she let go of her dreams to make sure her parents' ones still lived. She is struggling with the rent, with an old house and a very old flower shop. And she is surrounded by a bunch of assholes as her "best friends". Henley is that loud girl who always makes me cringe. And Arun is that awkward and spoiled gay-not-gay-but-straight man. Out of them all, he upset me the most. He was a spoiled rat. Seriously, he had everything on the plate from his parents and ALWAYS made sure he brought Isla's confidence down. They made fun of her about how she will end alone surrounded by cats or how she badly was dressed or how no man could like her. Seriously...Isla was obviously bothered by this. Only Jac took her defense and was the only one who tried to lighten her mood up.

And Leo...the main jerk of the book. Now, don't get me wrong. My favorite books are the ones with assholes brought down on their knees by powerful women. BUT I can't stand jerks who make fun of the heroine or do shit only to bring her down. That is purely immature. I couldn't stand Leo. His Aussie ass was full of shit. Let's not talk about the fact that he kisses another woman twice (that's how long I made in the book before getting to the end and read about how they figure their shit out). First, he kisses Arianne after Isla leaves his party and the second time he kisses her IN FRONT of Isla. How fucked up is this? When he kissed her the second time I just let it go and skipped to the end.

I really liked Isla. I could connect with her but the rest just...I don't know. I wanted her to be with Scott instead of Leo. I freaking wanted her to be with another guy instead of the main character! That says a lot.

I will not rate this book because Goodreads does not have negative ranks. Huh.

I'd say Isla was the most awkward woman to date or even stand next to Leo. She's adorable though.

Arun! God, I loved him. I'd really thought he's gayyyy but nooooo. Is he the next book with Henley??? say please!

Thanh's wooing Jac was the funniest. READ IT!

Well, the first few chapters are promising, but then the story goes and.. Let's say Leo's not just a jerk, he's a pain in the butt. I also don't really adore our main heroine, Isla. I mean.. She's been through so many hurtful things in that short amount of time yet I didn't see her 'growing up' and get over herself or acting like an adult.
I was expecting something nice from Leo, like heartful apology or I don't know, him begging Isla on his knees but nope, none from him what-so-ever. So yeah, it's a wee bit disappointing. Especially when the plot and the basic of the story is good.
Definitely will read more from this author!

2:75........I know I'm being very fussy and I'm sure everyone else will like it, but there was one thing that totally bugged the fuck out of me with this book!

Ok so not only did the leading guy in this book (Leo) kiss another (a few times) woman when leading gal (Isla) was in the room! But when after an argument between the two main characters (that other woman) told Isla that she'd just slept with Leo (that night)
And Leo lets Isla believe this for over 2 weeks even thou it isn't true......now to some this might not be a big deal but when Leo confesses that nothing happened that night, Isla believes him instantly and then pretty much jumps his bones straight away!

I really struggled after reading how hard those two weeks were for Isla to understand why she would forgive/believe him so easily! She pretty much sat there in dirty clothes, not showering thinking about those two together and then just jumps into his arms when he eventually tells her nothing happened......erm I think not!

This book has so much personality!!

A fun, feel-good, laugh-out-loud romp with the hilariously (and relatably) awkward Isla Matthews and her zany bunch of true blue friends - not to mention her super hot, perpetually shirtless, Australian-accented neighbor and love interest, Leo Wayland. This is the perfect book to curl up with on a long Sunday afternoon - but be warned, your family/roommates are going to want to know what you keep giggling at! The Jerk Next Door was a great light read that left me all warm and gooey inside. Komal Kant knocks it out of the park once again!

Rom Com with some angsty, irritating, hot Aussie on the side! This is Leo & Isla's story!

The name of this book is definitely what Leo Wayland, Isla's new next door neighbor is! Read it, throw the book, and laugh out loud! I am hoping that all the characters will soon have a book! Not one of my fave's from this author but still a very good read!

Too far... something cute but goes too far OTT. Just needed some editing.

Too many characters but they were fun. I liked Leo but we horsed around too much with the florist shop gang and sometimes I missed Leo.

1 -No, gracias- estrellas

*SPOILER ALERT*

Garbage. What a waste of time. 💩

There’s no chemistry, no emotion, no humor. It was a painful read. Isla is so awkward & embarrassing. None of the characters were believable or relatable. There’s no steam, no intimacy, no progression of like to love. All the random stream on consciousness thoughts/ inner monologues were mind numbing. Isla comes off as a bumbling idiot. It’s like she’s simultaneously 80 & 12 with how she behaves.... Never gonna read this author again. If I could give zero stars or a negative score I would.✌🏼

🌟4 Stars🌟-Great (had my attention and I enjoyed it),

Third person limited POV (heroine's); Standalone; HEA. No cliffhanger;

Funny from the beginning. Such chemistry between hero and heroine. The friends were all riots as well. Enjoyed laughing along with the characters at all the craziness. A lot of tension and misunderstandings so be ready to want to kick some of the characters asses. In the end, its worth it. Especially with all the nakedness (blush)

Hilariously wonderful book

I do enjoyed Isla's book! She had to be one of the funniest characters I've ever read about. Putting Isla and her friends together with Leo and his left me laughing throughout this whole book. I really enjoyed their story of discovering who you are and what you want in life. Another great book by Komal!

Hilariously sweet

It was a hilarious ride. Took isla and Leo a while to get it right but they did. Arianne needed to be slapped and thrown in the pool. This was a pleasantly different love story. Laughed out loud enough my husband thought I was loosing it. This was a great book.
