A unique thing about reading this section of the New Testament in this Reader's edition where chapters and verses are not marked is that Paul's epistles read more clearly as letters between friends. It makes you work a bit harder to see the how things connect but it gives them an urgency that they might lack when they are split up.
More than anything, these pages act as a reminder of Paul's brilliance an uncontainable exuberance. The number of concepts he invented in these letters that have captured imaginations for centuries is astounding. The fruit of the spirit, the armor of God, running the race, powers and principalities, spiritual warfare. He was so passionate about his message and the urgency is tangible in every sentence.
Also, Revelation is insane. James is infuriating. Hebrews is stunning. And Titus is really short.
I truly enjoyed reading through the scriptures laid out like this, with no chapter and verse breaks. I felt like I followed everything much better than I have before.
Pauline epistles: Paul turned Christianity into a lazy man's religion. See Galatians 2:16, in which Paul says, “a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ.” According to Catholics, this means that the Jewish laws are no longer valid for Christians. Protestants go even further and argue that in considering if one will enter Heaven, God will only look at whether he had faith that Jesus was both the Messiah and died for our sins. So good deeds aren't necessary either. I think Paul would agree with the Catholics.
Revelation: What is this? I didn't understand anything. Why do so many things happen after each other or at the same time? How could anyone write something like this?
I can’t remember exactly when I purchased the six volume ESV readers set. However, at some point, perhaps earlier in the year, I decided to read through one book of the Bible from these reader’s editions every weekend. This morning I finished Revelation. Using reader’s editions, which do not have chapter numbers or verse numbers can be a bit disorienting for Bible readers at first. We are accustomed to having lots of numbers, letters and footnotes surrounding our text. It can at times be frustrating when you encounter a great sentence or verse, and don’t have immediate access to where it is located in the book.(There is an index to chapters at the back of each volume). Once you get past that initial sense of “this is different” reading from these readers editions is a sublime experience. The books are designed to fit well in your hand, large pleasant script, and beautiful pages. They were made to enhance the reading experience of God’s word. They certainly accomplished that. When one recognizes that these books were written as the story of God’s word, And not isolated verses, reading large swaths is a wonderful exercise. I would highly recommend these editions.
This is an amazingly refreshing take on how we read the word of God. The book is beautiful inside and out. If you're looking to sit in a comfy chair for a good read, pick the Reader's Bible up and you'll enjoy every second.
