We are having a (relatively) minimalist Christmas tomorrow and then going all out in the middle of January when my daughter and her partner come home. While waiting for my baking to bake (never a favourite activity of mine) I thought I would slot in a quick online Christmas read. So many of my GR friends have enjoyed the Winston Brothers series that I thought I would try this one - even though I don't find beards a turn on. My husband has one at the moment and it makes him look like a very grumpy Santa.
Reid has a real writing ability and I may try another of her books in the future, even though this short story came perilously close to a DNF for me. This was due to Diane's idea of what was appropriate for a Christmastime chat with her adult daughter - a chat Jennifer clearly wasn't enjoying. I just can't believe any sane mother would behave like that - and with romance when you take me out of the mood I stay taken out of the mood!
5 Delightful Penny Reid Christmas Stars * * * * * Ms. Reid decided to tease and bless us with a Short Delight. It is part of the Winston Brothers Series and gives a nod to some very interesting things to come....
I saw another friend had read this and looked in the comment section to see how I could enjoy this nugget of goodness. Nocturnal Book Reviews posted it here: http://nocturnalbookreviews.blogspot.... I was given permission to share, so please enjoy!
Oh, this was a splendidly short and sweet little gift from PR!! I can’t help but wonder if this will develop into something more in future Beard books. 🤔 😈
OHMYGOSH. I was honestly not expecting these characters at alllllll. Penny Reid brought together these two initially unlikable but ultimately redeemable characters from the Winston Brother series. And honestly, I completely ship it. This was a pleasant, quite cute and humorous novella and I appreciated the holiday atmosphere (great timing). I want to see more of Jennifer's mom and Repo now (I'm officially a fan of them).
**Plus, I was glad to see Jennifer again and to hear mentions of Cletus.
Oh I loved that! what a treat! Definitely an unexpected matchup but sexy and fun and now I find myself hankering to read a romance with the same kind of hero ( don't want to give anything away!)
I like to call this short story How Diane Got Her Groove Back. It's a cute story about Jennifer Sylvester's mother, Diane, getting back on the horse after her divorce.
Diane is a character that we only sort of liked at the end of Beard Science. is a character we only sort of like, too. These are flawed people. They've done some not-so-great things, said some offensive stuff in the past, but they work as a minor pairing.
Would I like a full-length novel for Diane and ? Not particularly, but this is Penny Reid. PR can make characters interesting and fun even when they are flawed and unlikable. And I am so in love with the Green Valley characters that I would be happy to have stories like this (or novellas or full-length novels) for every single character. I want to live there. I want to see all developments in their lives play out on the page. Whether it's holiday revenge plots, baking contests or booty calls, no scene is too insignificant to be written about. I hope there's loads more to come for the future and I'm formally requesting that Drill gets more page time. That big, bald Casanova has me intrigued.
Love it. Great writing, as always. Such a tease. In more ways than one. Opposites attract. Sexy without even trying. Thank you Penny for the gift. I made it my Happy New Year present. And- I.Want.More.Now. ps, look out for Cletus, he's got his side-eye on YOU!
This was soooooooooooooooooo good!!!!! Very unexpected and wow!! I would love to see a book with these 2!!!!! You will find the link to this very short short story on its GR book page! Definitely read it immediately following Beard Science if you can!
"Beard in Waiting" is the adorable short story of Diane,Jennifer's mother and Cletus's MIL with Repo, from the Iron Wraiths. Won't say more but it was really short and sweet. Safe 3.5/5

I’m not sure how I missed this short story for so long!!
What a fantastic surprise coupling. Penny Reid does a great job of getting me invested in each and every character I near in Green Valley. I cannot wait for more!!
Hard to grade this story given how short it is, but for its length, I really enjoyed it. I like older-couple romances and wish there were more of them. There is such a stigma in romance writing against older couples, and that is a trend that I wish more writers would tackle. Penny Reid does it nicely here. I also like that the couple consists of two people so radically different from each other. For fans of the Winston stories, the main couple will be plenty recognizable and quite surprising. Hope to see more of them in the future! Love the title and the cover too - both very fitting :)
The 'two unlikely characters' is an understatement. Even though one of them annoyed me in one of the previous books, I'm glad for this new development. Plus, it's nice to see how things are after the events in book three. It's too short to be rated as anything other than a very short addition to this series.
