Nothing New Here, Move Along

I don’t know why, but I had higher hopes for this one. Unfortunately, it is the typical, right wing, love my prepper stuff, bash ‘dem liberals fare. It’s quite cringy to read.
It starts off with the typical “I’m not racist” and quickly follows up with stereotypical statements about homosexuals, Native Americans, liberals....all this gets you to page seven or so.
Continuing on, we get “cowardly British” people who are afraid to defend themselves with guns and political correctness ruining the nation. So page 12....you get the idea. It never lets up and is usually couched as “a joke”
Add to this a slew of simple grammatical and spelling mistakes that easily could have been corrected if anyone bothered to proofread this thing.

I recommend you give it a pass

Second times the charm ❤️I enjoyed this story, but couldn't get over the way a character spoke. He obviously could speak like a normal human being in Mo's moms presence. He was just trying too hard imo. I hope the character matures over the course of this series or meets a grisly end.

3.5 stars rounded down to 3.

A hillbilly hero, an obese prophet, a one-eyed warrior, a lesbian pirate and a paraplegic body builder are some of the cast in this NOT politically correct story. I think all these stereotypes were over the top which added to the humor of the novel. The blue skinned, naked zombies were more in the background of the story than I expected. The novel hits upon the ridiculous. I don’t really know how to describe the book other than it was over the top. The narrator’s accent was too much but I did enjoy his self-depreciation. His accent reminded me of Gomer Pyle. I kept expecting the narrator to break out in “Gall – lee!” If you aren’t easily triggered by politically incorrect and extensive cussing/foul language – then you too might find the comedic value in the book. I felt the story picked up about chapter 9 as more characters are introduced. I tire of walking on PC eggshells all the time and took the story as a break from that, the good with the bad if you will. It was an entertaining listen on a long road trip. If you trigger easy then move on. This isn’t for you.

While I have read a bit of zombie fiction over the years, mostly stuff like Peter Clines Ex-Heroes series, I have gained more of an appetite for the genre lately. Zombie Lake, book one of the Still Alive series, is the latest in the genre I've listened to. It is a bit more comedic than a lot of the more serious series, but it does have its own fairly unique take on the genre.

PLOT SUMMARY

Mo Collins, twenty-something guy from southern Alabama, is working as a crew member of the Viva Ancora, A working replica of an old caravel sailing ship. While anchored in Mo's hometown, a plague that turns people into naked, blue skinned, nocturnal PV's (short for plague victims, and not zombies, thank you very much) who run around biting and infecting people with 100% turn rate overruns the state. While almost all the crew went into town when the Cora docked, Mo and the ship's cook Crow stayed behind. Now, days later, they still haven't left the boat, living off the ships stores and fish they catch. Realizing they will need some supplies, Mo goes into town to try and find some essentials like medicine. Not surprisingly, the Walgreens has been looted thoroughly. Its while he's in town that Mo meets Smokes, who it turns out knows everything about zombie lore, and immediately he falls in with Mo.

While they try and get some weapons at the local pawn shop, they discover their next survivor, Petunia Sledge, nicknamed Hammer, an army vet that owned the shop. On the way back to the boat, they discover Gene, comic shop owner and geek of the year, as he kills a PV with his prop Wolverine claws. The last survivor they discover is Bradley, a schoolmate of Mo's and a football star who is now a paraplegic in a wheelchair who has a service monkey as his companion.

Returning to the boat, they start making larger plans to raid things like the local Wal-Mart for more supplies. Shockingly, they meet up with more people they know there, including a girl Mo was good friends with. This leads up to Mo connecting with his family again, who have survived and gathered survivors in the rural area they live. It seems as though everything is set up for the long haul until a "military" unit shows up, demanding people turn their guns in and work for them. Shockingly, this isn't welcomed by the locals, and bad things start to happen. When Mo's family's place is burned out, they decide to take the problem head on, and a confrontation takes place with the military unit, with some unexpected results and consequences, leaving the future of the town in doubt.

CHARACTERS AND WORLD BUILDING

It's not often you can say a book about the zombie apocalypse is character driven, but with this cast of characters, it couldn't be anything but. The characters are so well created, they could be people you know in real life, with strengths and flaws and crazy personalities. Mo is a great character, but Smokes is the comedy glue that really elevates the story, being the seer in the story. his personality and encyclopedic knowledge of pop culture and zombie lore means he can read where the story is going as if it was a story. Its a very meta kind of characterization, one I'd never seen before, and really makes the story stand out.

The world building is solid as well. You get a real feel for how small town rural Alabama works, and how this zombie outbreak overruns the area. There is surprisingly little zombie confrontations, since the PV's are mostly nocturnal. The PV's are surprisingly different than your run of the mill Walking Dead shambler, in funny and surprising ways. It's all these little touches that make this book stand out.

NARRATION

I had heard S.W. Salzman narrating on other books, so I had an idea what to expect. I have to admit to surprise on just how good he was on this! I knew he was talented, but his voice work on these very different characters is just outstanding. Male, female, urban, rural, redneck, foreign, it didn't matter, he nailed the voices and brought all the characters to life. His narrative pacing was so spot on that I didn't want to stop listening, it just drew me in. I have to rate this as one of the top five narrations of the last year for me.

FINAL THOUGHTS

While zombie fiction is a relatively new genre for me, Zombie Lake gives me hope that it will become a regular part of my reading rotation. I'm happy to recommend this series, and not just to horror fans. I think it can appeal to fans of multiple genres, including urban fantasy, mysteries, and action thrillers. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you check it out.

Javan Bonds takes readers to a pirate ship and zombies, what could go wrong?

The world has gone to Hell and Mo Collins is facing the end of the world on a replica pirate ship. Each night hordes of naked blue zombies flood the city streets Mo and his shipmates Crow just fish and try to survive. When another survive stumble across Mo and Crow's ship Mo has found a new lease on life. As Mom's reality starts to mimic fiction they need a new cast of characters to fill the each role; The Expert, The Tech, The Oracle, The Sacrifice and The Old Friend. Sometimes life bites but right now it's all about the zombies.

Unfortunately this book was a DNF for me, I found I was unable to become interested in the characters or plot and to be honest I read approximately 50% of this book and it was just boring. Nothing really happened, I understand the need to set up the world and characters this is supposed to be zombie and there were very few zombies to be had. It was more about getting the merry band of characters together. I think I would have liked the idea of Bond's zombies if there would have been more interaction with them, as they only come out at night, seem to go blue and are naked, lol.

I also had issue with the amount of slang of one of the characters that it was very hard to understand what he was saying even though the words were written right there and I just became annoyed each time he spoke. Maybe this makes me a prude or something when it comes to the English language, I don't know but I just wish that not every word that came out of this character's mouth was a swear or some type of slang or abbreviation of words.

This book was not for me but I'm definitely in the minority on this one based upon the reviews on Goodreads. Lots of people have enjoyed this book and found it extremely funny (maybe I have a different type of humour, once again I don't know, lol).

Cheers!!!!

WHAT A GREAT BOOK, KEEP THEM COMING!!!!!!

What a great book, with everything that is going on in the world, these kids work together to see if anyone else is alive that could fit in with them on the ship and contribute to keeping them alive. Mo, being the defacto leader, with Smokes, the 2nd in command & Hammer being in charge of weapons and making sure others know how to use and handle then when the time is right. Crow handles everything having to do with the kitchen as that was her expertise before this dead started to walk, though we see she could use any extra help possible. Then there is Bradley, who is a paraplegic and has a monkey as his helper, love that. With Mo's parents and a doctor joining the crew this looks to be one great story and I for one can't wait to read the next book of this series. Javan Bonds has done an awesome job with this story and I definitely recommend this to everyone looking for a great book and if your one of those people that can't handle zombie books at night or ever, this one will make you smile and laugh. Keep the books coming Javon.

This is another zombie apocalyptic series. It is written in first person/present tense form.

The story is about young man named Elmo (yes, Elmo) or Mo Collins, who was working on a ship named "Viva Ancora". It is a replica pirate ship that sales around the US waterways to entertain the population up and down connecting rivers. He is only 1 of 2 crew members who has survived the end of the world. Of course, as he goes on supply missions, he will meet a partially predictable stream of characters. The book is written as a journal.

I really wanted to like this book, and I continued to read it. However, I felt there were some parts that were not necessary to the story, and a little offensive. This was written as a young man's perspective, so maybe that is why I just could not get into it. Maybe that part of the population will find it more pleasant.

Zombie Lake is the funniest zombie apocalypse story I e ever listened to. This was not what I was expecting at all and I loved it! Even the narration made me laugh. The narrator does the funniest Alabama accent that was so bad, it was good! The characters were very relatable. The Oracle, Smokes, was probably my favorite character in the story and certainly the one that made me laugh the most. I definitely plan to listen to the rest of this series!

It’s not often that you can read a zombie apocalypse tale and finish it with a smile on your face. But then again I laughed while watching the original Evil Dead.
The characters are fun, the setting is original and the dialogue and interaction is unique.
The author, Javan Bonds, has brilliantly written this first book, of what will be a magnificent fun-filled series. A thoroughly enjoyable five witty star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read that guarantees smiles in every chapter.

There are tons of Zombie books out there and this is definitely the first series I've come across with humor in it. The story isn't just about Zombie slaying, it's about the characters coming together and trying to survive. I think the exchange between the characters is very realistic and makes for a fun, likable group. I enjoy the journal style writing and the blurbs at the beginning of each chapter are a nice addition. I look forward to continuing the series.

What a great start to a zombie series.

Mo has survived the outbreak and got a band of brothers and sisters together.
They live on a pirate ship docked in Gunterville Alabama, which so far has done them proud.
What is around the corner?

Mo Collins works on a replica pirate ship, the Viva Ancora, when the dead start to walk. Only him and his shipmate Crow are alive aboard, as all the rest of the crew went on land to have fun. Now they spend their days fishing and watching the blue skinned, naked zombies do what they do. Having sailed around the country, Mo finds himself only miles from home. Stumbling upon another survivour, Smokes, Mo has his mind made up to search for his family. What follows is a rollicking good time.

This was so much fun!! It's a fresh and unique look at the typical zombie book. Mo is writing his journal, which I liked, but the fun really started happening when Smokes came. He was one heck of a funny character!! I loved his take on the zombies and how he narrates it to Mo!! You will have to read the book to understand, but it was a unique way to handle the outbreak!!

The plot was fast paced and entertaining. I found myself laughing out loud a lot of times. The characters were fun and well written. It's quite a diverse group too which I liked. I liked that the author poked fun of the zombie troupes and made sure we knew that a zombie poops!! Lol.

In all, a highly entertaining read. I'm excited to see where the author takes it from here.

S.W. Salzman had a great range of tones and voices for the characters and brought each of them to life. I loved how he did Smokes because he was such a colourful character!! It was a great performance and I hope he reads the next one.

I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts

OMG, I freaking love this book! I have not laughed so hard while reading/listening to a book in a long, long time! I'm pretty sure that I snorted Coke out of my nose a few times (and, no, I don't mean Coca-Cola.....it was Mountain Dew!).

Javan Bonds has absolutely nailed what I have always pictured the Zompoc to be. Our protagonist, Elmo Collins (better known as Mo) decides to write a journal to chronicle his day to day life after the PV's have taken over. He can't believe that he isn't seeing tons of dead bodies or zombies when he ventures off the replica pirate ship where he works. Instead, he encounters people who seem to be fellow members of a movie cast!

I love all of the movie/TV references throughout the book. And, Smokes is a walking stereotype that you just have to love! You have an old friend in Bradley, who is a paraplegic complete with his service monkey, Mary. Mr. Bonds throws caution to the wind and mentions just about every stereotype you can think of in his descriptions of his characters. I love that he doesn't seem to care about being PC (a rare thing in today's world!).

Being from the South, I especially enjoyed the scene in Wal-Mart, where our crew goes to find supplies. Of course, if you are from the South, you know that you ALWAYS meet somebody you know when you go to WM! Our group encounters Mo's old love (who he was too shy to really pursue) and the local drunken redneck, Walt, who is only there for the beer.

I could go on and on, but you just have to listen to this book to really appreciate all of the fun! S.W. Salzman does an absolutely amazing job with the accents and dialects throughout the book. I plan to continue this series (and reread this book often) and I know that I will always hear his voice when I do.

If you love Zombie books and want to read a unique one, grab this one & never look back! Great job, Javan! Keep up the good work & I'll meet you at the Wal-Mart!

Giggles n groans

What a book. I'm still scratching my head at some of: the colorful language and it's many combinations, the situations they got into and somehow got out of, Smokes now there is one still trying to figure him out. Many chuckles and a few omg really they do what why. Guess it's the mom in me. Recommended looking forward to next.

My husband recommended I give this story a listen to (audiobook version).

Let me start by saying that my rating is probably off... Wouldn't a 2 star and 5 star equal 3 stars? Yeah... This was such a great story that even though I wanted to give it 5 stars, the narrator held it back, in my opinion. So I had to give it at least a 4 star.

While I feared that I wouldn’t be able to get very far in this story because of the narrator, the story was so good that it helped detract my attention away from the poor narration. Based on other reviews, I seem to be one of the only people who wasn’t a fan of his narration. Maybe I’ve listened to too many audiobooks by both great narrators and not so great narrators, so I’m pickier? I don’t know.

Either way, I was really hoping that the narrator was a newbie, but unfortunately, he is not. My biggest issue with his work is the robotic speech, having a too-long pause between each word. I can understand the robotic dialogue (when contractions don’t seem to be important), but the narrative of the story? Additionally, there were so many times when the narrator would…how do I phrase this?... He would go from one character voice to another in the middle of one character talking…as in it wasn’t done on purpose because it wouldn’t have made sense. At first, I had thought the hillbilly/country accent was his original/natural speaking voice, but based on other audiobooks he’s narrated, that’s not the case. So I don’t know if he was having issues speaking in that type of voice or what?! I did find it strange that the narrator seemed to do the best voice (most natural-sounding) when he did Smoke’s character. Strange…

Now, for the story itself… I loved it! It was hilarious! I liked how the author had Mo reading from his journal, essentially. And Smoke’s “Book of Smokes” was great. I loved the whole concept of Smoke’s being the oracle and determining what character role each new character fit into based on the typical zombie movies. It was different and very interesting. Smoke’s was just a funny fat guy, the names he’d call the other characters. OMG! So funny!

Some (most) of the topics that were brought up were hilarious, like when Mo was talking about a previous girlfriend and performing oral on her or the idea of him not using the lord’s name in vain…something to do with journalistic integrity (I forgot exactly what he said). The description of the zombies was completely different from the stereotypical zombie. I’ve read plenty of books and watched tons of movies related to zombies and there’s always those many commonalities between them. Like there’s a set of rules or what the zombie is supposed to look like/act like that most people seem to go along with that idea. So the fact that this author did his own thing? Nice. I did wish the characters had more interactions with the zombies, given this was a zombie story, but the entertainment the characters brought me made up for it.

I’m definitely interested in listening to book 2 of this series.

I Haven’t Laughed At A Zombie Book… Ever (Until Now)

4.25 out of 5 stars

I’d read a few other reviews (even just titles) from a few of my other reviewer friends before jumping into this one. All of them talked about laughing throughout the book. I knew to expect it, but it still caught me off guard how randomly funny this book was.

Zombie Lake tells the story of Mo Collins (no, not the MadTV star and don’t mention that unless you want to get punched in the face by him) and his groups trials and tribulations as they learn of a new zombie-like plague hitting the town they are docked at on their replica pirate ship, the Viva Ancora.

Along the way, we meet other survivors including The Expert, The Tech, The Oracle, The Sacrifice, The Old Friend plus many more. Seriously, they were all explained out by The Oracle – and every time he would “predict” the next scene or next person they would meet – Mo’s reaction would kill me. It really made me (like Mo) realize that most of the Post-Apocalyptic books I read follow and almost exact plot map. Not all in the same order – but they all seem to hit it.

The movie trivia/quotes/similarities were awesome to a movie-lover like me. I really enjoyed when they came to the scene near the church and they talked about other zombie movies. Or when they would go anywhere and Smokes would basically tell them that because he was black, he wouldn’t go in first because they always died first in every “bad horror film”.

Bonds really understands both his audience and the post-apocalyptic genre and allows that to shine in Zombie Lake. I thought that Mo, Smokes, and crew were incredibly enjoyable to follow along especially in the format of a journal that “if you’re reading this, then I must have died” format. It just made the story easier to dive in and out of.

Overall, a funny and enjoyable post-apocalyptic zombie tale that has some new parts in it that I’ve never seen or read before (zombie poop for example). And a refreshing take on the genre.

The narration, by S.W. Salzman was good. At first, I was worried about the accent. The character is supposed to be a slow-talking southern drawl dude – and I think that Salzman hit it on the head without making the book unlistenable. After the first chapter or so I found myself getting into a rhythm with his narration and it became part of the story.

This is such a ridiculous and fun story. Mo is engaging and the zombies are nudists. Luckily, there’s this pirate ship where Mo can hangout with his few friends. The story had me laughing, sometimes at inappropriate moments. Being gnawed on by zombie nudists isn’t funny…. or is it?

Mo cusses, a lot. Hence, I felt right at home with this character from the beginning. Now Mo also is a bit of an idiot and he’s got some ‘isms’ to deal with, like his casual racism, homophobia, and sexist ways. At first, I wasn’t too sure what the story was going to do with this aspect but as the plot develops, I could see the author was using Mo’s hangups as a way to poke fun at such aspects of society. In this way, Zombie Lake reminded me a bit of True Blood and how it pokes fun at racism, etc.

The side characters could use a little more fleshing out. The ladies don’t get to do much, other than Hammer who is a badass. I really liked her character. Crow, the cook on the pirate ship, and another lady are treated as potential romantic interests and not much else. I hope the rest of the series gives us more for the ladies to do.

Smokes was fun but sometimes over the top. I liked how he did his best to map out their situation, comparing it to basic zombie storylines. He, himself, is the Oracle and Mo comes to rely on him when making big choices for the group. Bradley and his service monkey Mary are an awesome addition. I think he and Hammer are my two favorite characters. The pirate ship is coming along magnificently!

The plot has enough action to keep me engaged without wearing me out. The humor was fun, tho there were a few moments where it was over the top or I just needed a little break with something serious, like a zombie streaking through the scene. The tale leaves us at a the start of something bigger so be ready to pick up the next in the series. 4/5 stars.

The Narration: S. W. Salzman is pretty good for this book. The setting is Alabama so sometimes the accent was there and sometimes it was just a bit off. Not bad, but not spot on. My brother-in-law is from there, and we’ve visited the state a few times, but it weren’t for that, I probably wouldn’t have noticed. In other ways, he did a great job. He had distinct voices for all the characters and his female voices were feminine. I especially like his voice for Hammer and for Mo’s mom. The pacing was perfect and there were no technical issues with this recording. 4.5/5 stars.

With each character assigned a role, the disparate band survives the plague and its effects.

The Hero, the original zompoc gangsta, arrived in the sheltered cove where his hometown parked its watercraft. That he arrived in a pirate ship (yes, a real honest to God pirate ship named the Viva Ancora or just Cora for short) enhanced his mystique considerably. Arriving with one crew member, an American Indian female called Crow, and plenty of room for crew or passengers, the Cora became the home for the crew, friends and family he would gather to his party. Each new addition filled a role within the group. Quick to add and fit into the crew were the Hammer, the Expert, the Oracle and lest we forget the originals: their roles were the Captain and the Cook. Altogether, they roughly formed a crew of survivors who are determined to survive the Plague.

More about the Plague: wherever it started, whoever decided that the cure for Cancer was to turn everyone into blue nudist cannibals with sensitive vision. Why blue? Who knows? But the progression after being infected (bitten) was quickly becoming insufferably hot as your skin turns blue. Stripping off all clothing is the last step before gaining an insatiable appetite for uninfected flesh. Once the infection sets in, the Plague Victims (PVs or peevees) have no interest in your infected flesh and leave you to turn blue.

While the Storyline is fairly basic this early in its development, but the Characters steer this boat through the shoals. The characters themselves and their interactions with each other are the true gold in this treasure hunt. Humor is the medium this crew uses as currency. Well intentioned and received, the humor defines the character interactions. Quirky and complex, but not complicated, the characters engage with each other. This is a different treatment than I usually see and I like it! We'll see where this goes in the next books in the series. And YES, I will be reading them.

I was given a copy of the audiobook by the author in exchange for an honest review. I honestly loved this book! I love zombie books in general, but this was different. Why? The biggest reason was I laughed! Yes, I laughed many times and sometimes out loud while listening. Set in Alabama, Mo (Elmo) now lives where he worked. Onboard the Viva Ancora. A replica Pirate ship. Fortunately, the zombies in this story mostly come out at night, mostly. They can come out in the daytime, but again, they mostly come out at night. Mo is telling the story as he writes it into the journal he is keeping. He writes as he would talk and he does not hold back. Originally the only known survivors are Mo and Crow. A very quiet Native American who also worked on the Viva Ancora. Then he meets more survivors. Since they stayed local when the ZA started, just off the coast of Mo's hometown, many people they meet are friends or acquaintances. I am not going to say more about the story, you really need to listen to this book for yourself. This is the first book in series which is now at 6 or so books. I loved the Alabama accent the narrator used. Perhaps that is the narrator's natural accent, but I kind of doubt it. I contacted the author and was told my Mr. Bonds that book two will be coming to audio format soon! Thank goodness, I am missing Mo and the gang already!!!

🎧 Audio Review 🎧

I don't know what to say because while this book wasn't really my taste, I see the appeal and also see why so many people loved it. Book 1 was mostly world building and getting to know the characters while Mo, the main character, gets together a band of interesting and diverse people to face the zombie apocalypse. This book had very little zombies in it and it also didn't have much excitement in the way of survival like I normally expect from this genre. There is a lot of humor for listeners who like comedy and I couldn't believe how different each character is and how fun it was to see so many personalities and lifestyles together in one group. The zombies aren't your normal zombies, I will admit I didn't think flesh eating zombies could get more gross than that but these ones are disgusting and I don't mean gory. The writing was very good and I think this is the beginning of what is probably a great series and a fun world created by the author.

I love S.W. Salzman, he does an amazing job with so many accents. I will admit a few of them were not my thing but that is just a matter of taste and says nothing about his job as a narrator. He did it perfectly, I know that the humor in the story called for the over the top accents so I get it and I know I am 100% in the minority on this one when I say it was a bit too much for me.

OMG! This has me laughing so hard! I loved this so much! I keep telling my husband about this story and he doesn’t even read! Already half way through book two and I just finished this one this morning! I also already recommended it to a few people.
This may be one of those books that plays out even better in audio thanks to the narrator.... who happens to be amazing! Not that it wouldn’t be amazing with whatever accents your own brain gives the characters. Anyway there better be an entire endless stream of books coming out with these characters or I’ll be very disappointed.
This book has a Mo Collins (that happens to be the name of an actress in Fear the walking dead) there’s a guy in a wheelchair (The brother of the woman in FTWD is also in one) there’s a monkey, a pirate ship, naked blue skinned yellow eyed zombies, and an Oracle. Every silly cultural reference or stereotype you can think of. Star Wars trivia, Star Trek trivia, video game trivia, movie trivia..... you’ve got it all here! Javan I want to be your friend!
Oh and did I mention laughs for days..... yes I did didn’t I! Lol

I was voluntarily provided this review copy at no charge by the author, publisher and or narrator.

I want The Book of Smokes

This is a fun zompoc comedy thriller that does not take itself too seriously. It's like a parody of every zombie story you ever read.

The Book of Smokes is genius. It's worth reading Zombie Lake just to read the prophetic excerpts. If you ever want to write your own zombie epic, you can follow the rules set out in The Book of Smokes.

The narrator has a distinctive and engaging "voice". The stereotyping is a little extreme, but that's all part of the fun. The Old Friend is the best paraplegic protagonist I've ever come across. I love how he is able to perform many tasks better than Mo himself, such as lowering the gangplank at the end of the story. Mary is, of course, adorable. Now I want a monkey, too.

The only negative thing I'd say about this story is that the opening chapter is completely "told" and not "shown". Given the quality of the narration in later chapters, that's a huge shame. I almost put the book down after only a few pages.

I think Bond would be better off removing that chapter completely and starting with an actual scene we can visualise. That would provide a better opening hook than the generalised description of the State of the Nation we get in chapter one.

This review was first published on Kurt's Frontier.

Synopsis:

When the zombie apocalypse hits, Mo Collins and Crow were aboard their reconstructed pirate ship, the Viva Ancora. The rest of the crew is either dead or infected. Blue, naked zombies have flooded the Alabama lake town Mo called home in his childhood. Mo and Crow fish off the boat and watch the zombies roam the town seeking untainted flesh.

A chance encounter with survivors changes the direction of Mo and Crow’s existence. Now they must create something worth living for.

Review:

Full disclosure, I’m not a fan of the zombie apocalypse subgenre. That said, I have found some I like, so I decided to give Zombie Lake a try. It is an interesting take on the subgenre. In addition, it explains how (at least in Javan Bonds’s universe) the zombie infection works.

Javan Bonds wrote Zombie Lake in almost a “tongue in cheek” fashion. What if, after being a fan of zombie apocalypse movies and TV shows, you found yourself in one? People might start drawing parallels to The Walking Dead or Night of the Living Dead to their current situation. You might start looking for The Expert, The Tech, The Oracle, The Sacrifice, etc. If you like zombie apocalypse, you should give it a read. If you aren’t a fan, it won’t make you a fan.

This series covers everything and so much more beware you must act and thing as a real southern redneck or as the legends describe rednecks.
I am writing this and waiting in book 7 to be released it adventures of MO and his band of humans after a virus is released and turn people into zombies not your normal zombies but they are blue, constantly hungry and erect cock. Now as the story goes on you find these zombies are changing and growing, they getting faster, groups are nesting with a queen who does nothing but get bred and have more zombies. Now for the remnants of human they are not doing to well they keep killing each other by accident or as food source. Killing for food is a minster who came to town and started killing the children of the members of his flock and they are stupid enough not question him when he feeds them and they do not know they are eating their own children they have taken the minster at his word and blind faith.
There is so many plots, storylines and adventures you need to either read or listen to them so remember your are A Southern Redneck no education or brains trying to survive the blue zombies who wants to eat you.

Zombie Lake is the first book in the Still Alive, a unique and hilarious zombie apocalypse series. I was laughing out loud from the beginning to the end. Javan Bonds is one talented author, insanely creative with a sense of humor to boot. The characters are refreshing, and for the purpose of comedy completely stereotyped. The storyline is entirely entertaining, written as a journal, told from Mo's, the main protagonist's point of view. It sets the grounds for the series and introducing the primary cast members.

I've finished the series within a matter of days, so I'll give you a quick heads up, this installment is more of an introduction with almost no action. However, that changes quickly in the next additions, action, gore, and even humor will ramp up.

S.W. Salzman's narration is absolutely brilliant. I'm literally at awe with his ability to perform so many distinct voices and accents. Kevin Pierce reads the intro about Javan Bonds, after learning more about the author, I find him utterly inspirational. All around this an amazing listen with outstanding narration, one I highly recommend.

Different
It strikes me that there doesn't seem to be a explanation for the stars that are given. So I thought I'd start giving my take on it.
1 horrible no redeeming qualities.
2 there are redeeming qualities.
3 good worth reading, or well written but not my cup of tea.
4 great but there's something off.
5 loved it.

So now about this story. I couldn't stop listening, I can't wait for more of this series. I want to say more about this story but I absolutely hate spoilers, so I won't do it to you by going into details.
The narrator brings the story to life.
Reasons I enjoyed this audio book:
Wonderful characters, Page-turner, Great world building, Unpredictable, Original, Easy-to-read, Entertaining, Action-packed, Twisted, Steamy, Funny.
Bookshelves/tags:
adventure, contemporary, humorous, open-ended, recorded, series, ships, zombie.
This Audiobook was given to me for free at my request from the publisher, author or narrator and I provided this unbiased voluntary review.

Look, I don’t leave reviews on books. I’m a firm believer that what other people say has no bearing on how the book actually is. I came in to this series with no real expectations. I am a mail carrier and I listen to audiobooks while I deliver and this was just another book to fill the time. This series is making it very hard to work. I’m not one to audibly laugh at books either but this stupid book has made me pull over to recompose myself a million times. It’s childish, it’s ridiculous, the narration is so cheesy it’s amazing. It’s like Cleveland from family guy is reading to me. I keep saying “I don’t know why I love this ridiculous book as much as I do, but it’s f***ing amazing.” I think I’ll buy the printed version so I can refer back to passages in every day conversation. Gene is my hero. Mo is my new best friend. I’m probably going to start it over when I finish just because it’s so strangely amazing. If you have a vulgar sense of humor and enjoy laughing at childish humor, dear lord read this. You can thank me later!
