I managed to get through (with great difficulty) the first of the four books. I have no idea how this got good ratings, I really don't. Granted, the premise is good - but the implementation is sorely lacking.
It pushed several of my buttons. First, Dreggo spouts off her history to someone she has already decided to kill. Yes, as Lady Holiday says in The Great Muppet Caper, it has to go somewhere - but the next thing we know, Dreggo is keeping back lots of secrets from those in her gang (we know because she thinks it and we hear it).
Then there's Marta, who can't help falling head over heels for the first male she sees who isn't a member of her gang. I am really sick to death of authors who do this to their female characters - especially when those characters are supposed to be strong, independent types (in fact, the plot/story line requires that they be).
The Huntsmen are an extremely convenient plot tool - they turn into whatever they need to be. Savage by reputation, they are controlled when control is required. No spoilers, so no examples, but they become what best serves the plot.
Then we have magical helpers. OK, they're not really magical, but they happen to have exactly the skill set and knowledge needed to get past the next obstacle. It's like a D&D party where the Dungeon master has placed NPCs in perfect positions for the players and their help is required to move on. But that's a game and this is not.
Did I mention that backstory plays an incredible role as well? When the Tube Riders meet up with an underground organization - one with no reason to trust them and lots of reasons to thrown them to the wolves (so to speak), backstory magically comes to the rescue.
I was very surprised and very pleased with Tube Riders. I always hesitate to read sets but this one was different. I didn't think there were authors still writing such stories. Volume Ford did seem out of place and a little confusing. I will be looking forward two more of Ward's work.
I had read books 1 and 2 plus the shorts, so when the whole set came out I grabbed it and finished the series. There is excitement, love, thrills, gore, secrets, redemption, friendship, syfy, everything except a normal life in a London run by a dictator Governor. I even shed tears a few times. Loved it all!
Great writing and such a fun and unique adventure.. little bit of dystopia mixed in with a little sci-fi to make it a great story. I read the whole series one book after the other and it kept my interest the whole time. Loved the characters, very well developed. Highly recommend
Great trilogy. Every book needs to have a really "good" villian and Chris does not disappoint in this trilogy. The hero's are just as good, Marta and Switch ect. Lots of meat characters like the huntmen's. Anyway don't want to give anything away here.
This story of a future world life in London is not what I had been expecting, but was so much more! Every time I thought ,oh good now they are safe for awhile something would happen to change things. This is a definite must read for Si-Fi lovers!!
I really liked these books. Was glad that at the beginning the author gave the correct reading order as it really did make it a better read. Unless you like futuristic reads of alternative world order then this might not bee for you but the sentiment and why the revolt happens is just so right.
