Karev Brothers #1

Her Ruthless Russian

Rate this book
Born into a Russian Mafia family, Vlad Karev is no stranger to violence…but this time it’s personal. Someone has murdered his father and Vlad can’t rest until he finds the killer. When the trail leads to an art gallery, Vlad wants to dig deeper, but he needs help from the owner’s daughter. The pretty redhead is far too innocent for a man like Vlad, but he’ll do what it takes to get the information he needs. His obligations are to the family, even if that means using the fiery woman.

Madison O’Connor works hard to keep her family’s gallery going, although secretly she has little interest in art. But when she discovers her father’s been laundering money for the Russian Mafia, she’ll do everything she can to keep him out of jail. She hates to lie, but she has a plan…seduce the Russian bad boy to learn the mob’s secrets. Never mind his dangerous exterior or icy blue eyes, Madison’s going to get her family free of the mob, even if she has to use Vlad Karev to do it.

As the killer gets closer, so do Vlad and Madison. But is their connection just the means to an end, or could their romance be real?

As I was beginning this, did I expect to loveeee (or at least like) this russian mafia book?

 photo 8824070_zpsuebqynte.gif

But as I got just a little into it I quickly went from excited to
 photo 685795-1_zpsywvqytmp.gif
It quickly became clear the mafia aspect was quite weak. Vlad and Maddie's connection had absolutely no foundation other than they both thought they were using each other. Then disappointment slowly bled to
 photo 9681109_zps3ypbki4a.gif
It just got stupid and totally unrealistic. Suddenly Vlad is a big ball of mush who's leaving the life and Maddie is so in love and blah blah blah. Huge letdown. But hey, I finished it before the ball dropped at midnight, so yay for me.

Madison O’Connor discovered that her father was using their family art gallery to launder money for the mafia family Karev. Madison didn’t want to indebted to the Karev family and she decided to use her charms on Vlad Karev to attain information she could use to either bargain with or blackmail the Karev family to leave the O’Connor family alone. Vlad Karev decided to play along with Madison’s seduction because he was physically attracted to her and he was trying to figure out who murdered his father.

Their little game quickly turned into more and Madison discovered she cared for Vlad. While Vlad’s feeling was changing towards Madison, he suspected her family was involved in his father’s murder so he still guarded his heart. But soon, even he couldn’t deny that they were in love with each other. Would they choose love over solving the problem plaguing their respective families?

The story is short so there wasn’t a lot of character or plot building. But the attraction and banter between Madison and Vlad was delightful. Everything happened pretty fast but I found the story interesting. The narrator is new to me but I can't say that the narration added or detracted from the story. His voice was just okay. I did like the author's writing. I found it was quick and to the point, even though left a couple of the subplots unfinished so I look forward to getting more answers in book 2.

Who knew the Russian mob could be so romantic? I probably should add sexy too. I have never met someone from the Russian mob so I can't really compare.

Vlad is looking into his father's murder which leads him to Maddison whose father has her own ties to his family. Vlad is the last of three brothers who still take part in his family's business. His other two brothers got out but Vlad can't let his father's murder and murderer go until he knows the truth. Maddison wants to cut all ties to the Karev family to save her father from making even more mistakes. So both Vlad and Maddie use their desire for one another and their passion to find out answers about each other. They do get a bit distracted with each other but quickly learn that they really are not enemies. It sound cliché and cheesy but I am far too hooked on their relationship to care.

The pacing was great. I mean the book isn't that long so there isn't much time to set everything up but Leslie North did an amazing job keeping my interest. We get to know other characters, lots of passion and still have time for a good mystery. There was danger and romance and one heck of a great HEA. Questions need to be answered still and there are two more brother's stories to read. Can't wait.

I received this via Netgalley.

Madison knows bad news when she sees it, so when trouble darkens her front door her first instincts is to run. Until she finds her own guardian angel in the most unlikely of places. Vlad lives on the edge. Surrounded by violence all his life, he thrives on danger. When violence hits close to home, he wants answers and that quest may prove to be his salvation and his undoing. Her Ruthless Russian is a perfect metaphor for love. It comes out of nowhere like a thief in the night, but the impact stays with you for the rest of your life. From beginning to end, Ms. North has done it again. Delivered a stunning story of passion that ravishes the heart and leaves me craving more.

Title: Her Ruthless Russian
Author: Leslie North

4 unexpected stars

I'm not quite sure what I expected to find or read when I picked up Leslie North's Her Ruthless Russian, and after having finished this novel, I'm still left wondering how I felt. I love mafia genre novels because the possibilities are endless - it can be as gruesome, as gentle or it can be as mixed up as the imagination will allow, but for some reason, I was left wanting more and needing more of the realism that is the life of a mobster. There were moments when I often wondered who and what was the real character - the soft spoken or the outgoing Madison, and the hard edged or the vulnerable Vlad? There were contradictions that did keep me hooked enough that I wanted to know who they really were.
4 breath taking dreams

As a couple these two were compelling - I wanted to know more about them and I wanted to see how their original plans of revenge would work out against their feelings. Like I mentioned, they are contradictions that had me scratching my head at times - their actions didn't seem to be realistic to their lifestyle and life. That being said, I still loved their story; it was an interesting one that I'm sure as a full length novel would have been full of surprises and room to grow. Would I read more from Leslie North? Absolutely since I see so much promise from this authors.

If you’ve thought about getting your literary toes wet in the mafia romance genre, you might want to consider reading Her Ruthless Russian by Leslie North. At only 103 pages, it’s a very quick read that is a stand-alone but also book 1 of a three part unfolding mobster murder drama. Yes, you have to read all three books if you want to know "who done it!" Each book will feature a HEA for the somewhat estranged Karev brothers, with the final book revealing who brutally murdered their father.

As an avid mafioso book enthusiast, for me, it was more of a low key, less in-depth, uncomplicated read than I’m used to. The single biggest element that jumped out at me here was it appears you can simply choose to just walk away from the mob with no consequences, despite previously being part of it. Let’s just say that is not what I’m used to coming across in this genre. But, hey, I’m just shrugging it off, because, honestly, this short novella is more about a resentful of the mob heroine, who just can’t resist the dangerously handsome hero, and a “can’t keep my hands to myself” mob hero who likewise can’t say no to her, as well. The mob murder for me seemed a minor detail.

I think this author could pull off an in-depth, complex one book mafia read, but she choose here to write three very short novellas where you have to buy all three to get the final conclusion. It’s up to you if you find that marketing strategy appealing and or acceptable.

Title: Her Ruthless Russian, Series: Karev Brothers (Book 1), Author: Leslie North, Pages: 103, short novella, stand-alone but part of an unfolding drama, need to read all 3 books if you want final conclusion, VERY steamy scenes, three Russian brothers who want to know who killed their father, some mob violence.

Vlad and Madison made a good team or adversaries in the search for justices and freedom. Vlad wanted to know more about his father’s death and Madison wanted her family free from the mafia. Face-pace, sexy, alluring, and leading. There was so much more than what was presented. Fascination around secondary characters was built and held all the way to the end. Wanted more of the other Karev brothers and even Savannah was cemented.

Narrator Review of . . . HER RUTHLESS RUSSIAN (Karev Brothers, #1) . . . D.C. Cole had that sexy edge to this voice that lends credibility to the narration of a Russian mafia family. The way the Russian rolls from his tongue gave me a hint of authenticity. I loved the smooth cadence and sound quality. I could increase speed without losing one syllable of speech. Quick read and an even quicker listen. This was one step in the suspense around the death of Sergey.

For me the narrator took this to the rating given. The story read alone was just a three star read. Good content but not enough depth, mafia content, bad boy relations. Just needed more to seriously pull you in.

A strong and engaging first book.

Book 1 introduced us to Vlad and Madison, and the basic down and dirty on their friends and family.

I like the direction the author took, with both her story line , and her characters. Leaving lots of questions to be answered ( it is a series ), while at the same time meeting our basic thirst for information

I'm looking forward to book 2.

This was my first book by Leslie North and I can't wait to read more by her!!! This was a fairly short story but Ms. North packs so much into this book from the mystery of Vlad's father's death to the smouldering chemistry between Vlad and Maddie. I was so immersed in this story that it was over way too soon!!!! The narrative was flawless and fast paced! I can't wait to read more in this series ! Maybe about Vlad's brothers!! I do love myself a hot and sexy Russian!!!

I am a huge fan of DC Cole's narration and I melted into a puddle with his mafiaso voice!!!! Such a thrill to listen to him!!

Vlad is a member of the Russian mafia. A month ago, his father was murdered and Vlad is trying to hunt down the murderer. He is looking into all of his dad's business deals. One deal he is interested in is the money laundering deal financing an art gallery run by the O'Connor family. He goes there and meets the gorgeous Madison. He decides to seduce her for fun and information.
Madison hates her family's connection with the mafia. It is tearing her family apart so she decides she will try to bring down the family by seducing Vlad and getting incriminating evidence from him. She will then turn it over to her friend in law enforcement.
Somehow in the mutual seductions, feelings got involved. Vlad may learn there is more important things than work and Madison will realize that Vlad is more than a shadowy mobster.
This is good story with a mystery. I voluntarily received a copy of this story and this is my review.

This was a very light mafia story. Vlad is investigating the murder of his father. His brothers have abandoned the mafia life and he is the only one still holding onto the lifestyle. There is not much "mafia" in the story. Madison family owns an art gallery that was laundering money for Vlad's father. She is his prime suspect. The story is very short so there is not a lot to it. There were things that were unrealistic. I doubt if you can just "leave" the mafia.

Safety Level: Safe
Cliffhanger: Ends on a semi-cliffy
Ending: HFN

I've read many books from Ms. North. Most of those have been about handsome sheikhs finding true love with women who are seemingly incomparable from their usual type. I took a chance on this series because I like Russian mafia stories, and I wanted to see how the whole series would be played out. I didn't expect that the bigger series arc was going to remain unsolved until the very last book.

On the romance-side, I think that the insta-love factor in this book wasn't detrimental at all. I like that both characters started out with a lack of trust for the other. It made them aware of what the other person was capable of. Because of that, I believe that, in the long run, this pairing would work because they both seem to really know each other better than I would have expected.

I will be moving on to the second book right after this review because I want to know what contributions Maxim would give to the investigation.

A Russian mobster and an Irish woman who runs her family's art gallery meet and sparks fly, even when they both have their agendas for why they meet. Vlad is on a mission to find out who was behind the death of his father. A note found on his father leads him to Madison O'Connor and figures he can use his charm to get her to tell him what he wants to know. Madison hates that her family is tied to the Karev family and hopes she can get Vlad to give her some leverage to get her family out from under their thumb. With the suspect list getting longer for Vlad he doesn't know what to think, but he doesn't think Madison was behind the death. When she is put in the crossfire he knows he will stop at nothing to keep her safe. And in the end the mob family he thought was so important has nothing on the family he finds with Madison. Another great new book from Leslie North. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Review Copy of this book.

This was one delicious bite. It's started out a bit show, to where i made myself continue reading. And I'm so glad I did!! Vlad it's a super sexy mafia Prince. The last Karev brother in the business. When murder strikes its up to him to find the culprit. But looking into their Family's dealing bring one surprise he wasn't prepared for.

All Madison wants is to free her family from the horrendous clutches of the mob. But when a fiercely handsome yet friendly stranger helps her in a bind, she is overcome with mixed feelings when she finds out who he really is. Lust comes swift for both parties. But the excuse to use the other to learn the truth and free then both is too easy to pass up. But lust has a sneaky way of transforming into something more. Danger is everywhere.well they both make it out?

Vlad Karev is part of the Russian mob and he wants to know who killed his father and will do whatever it takes to find out who did this. Madison O’Conner runs the art gallery owned by her family. All she wants is to get the mob out of her business. In walks Vlad and she knows there is going to be trouble. When these two get together things get really hot and explosive. They play a cat and mouse game of trust to get the answers they both want.

This is a great start to the Karev Brothers Series. I enjoyed this story and anxiously await the next one. This author did a great job with the plot and pulling this story together at the end.

I received an ARC copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. This is the first book I have read by this author and it did not disappoint. This book is about Vlad (the son of a Russian mob boss) and Madison (the Irish daughter of a business owner that is stuck laundering money for said Russian mob boss). Despite the alternator motives of both, the lack of trust and the lies, their attraction for each other is hard to miss and impossible for them to ignore. This book has lots of action and some suspense mixed with romance and a few hot and steamy moments. This is a good read but left the main point unanswered leaving room for book 2. I would recommend this book.

Madison O'Connor runs an art gallery which was funded by the Russian mob. Vladimir Karev is trying to find out who killed his father and starts an investigation all on a note Madison wrote to his father. Vlad installs himself in Madison's Fine Art Gallery and introduces himself. ...he thinks Madison has a hand in his father's death...the story goes from there.
I love the ending, it was so sweet after all the back and forth throughout the book.
It was a short book, but had a lot in there....sometimes a short book is what I need to read if it's done right, it wasn't rushed in any way. I think I might carry on in the series.

Leslie North got the combination of romance, mystery, and suspense just right to make this a disgustingly great book. It’s rare the blurb gives you what you exactly expect.

The first two chapters of the book are a mark of a good scene which advances the plot and character of the whole novel. It’s not only the scene but the dialogue too; it’s drawn out perfectly with just about enough suspense to keep readers or at least kept me engaged.
In search of his father’s brutal murderer, Vlad 'pays a personal visit,' to O’ Connor Fine Art Gallery. Madison O’Connor is in dispute with the men delivering wood frames at the family owned gallery. When the supervisor shoves Madison, Vlad intervenes. From the minute Vlad intervened at the gallery, I knew Madison was in trouble. What woman would not feel more protected in the company of a macho man?

Madison is an absolutely smart lady. Why would she think her seduction tactics to get closer to Vlad and extract information to blackmail him into releasing the hold the Russian Mafia had on her father would work? An observant experienced Vlad does not miss the opportunity to invite the red-head for; I quote Dmitry, Vlad’s brother, “dressed-up interrogation” dinner, and against her friend’s advice Madison meets up with him. A tour of the gallery after dinner leads to groping which would have resulted in so much more had it not been for Peter Franklin's intrusion, Carson O’Connor’s former associate, and friend.

Madison’s move to Vlad’s apartment block reinforces the continuation from where they left off.

Could Vlad's father’s killer be the same person who ordered the hit on him? Is it possibly Peter or Maxim, Vlad’s alcoholic older brother?

And would Madison’s pregnancy convince Vlad to leave his Mafia ways behind?
Loved it! Recommended for only romance fans and fans of romance mixed with a bit of mystery suspense. Sex,action, twists, its all in there.

*I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.*

This was my first introduction to Leslie North's books and I loved it! Vlad Karev is the youngest of three Karev brothers, who's family are involved in the mob. His older two brothers, Maxim and Dmitry have cut ties with the family business, leaving Vlad to take over when their father is murdered. Vlad's uncle Igor is investigating his father's murder, but not quick enough for Vlad, so he takes matters into his own hands. His investigation leads him to the O'Connor art gallery, where he meets the fiery and independent Madison, or Maggie, O'Connor. The attraction between the two is instant and the chemistry is hot! Madison, who's best friend just happens to be an FBI agent, agrees to go on a date with Vlad in order to find information about the mob in order to blackmail her family's way out of their association with the Russians. Vlad is there because he has a note sent to his father and he suspects that Maggie's father of murdering his own.

While they both have ulterior motives for seeing each other, they can't deny that they have a spark. The sex between the two is smoking! There weren't that many sex scenes, which I was okay with, because it left time for the plot to be developed. There is a HEA and an unexpected surprise for both Vlad and Maggie. Vlad is an Alpha bad boy with a heart of gold, though he'll never admit it. However, you can tell right away how much he cares for his father and though he's slow to admit it, the feelings he develops for Maggie, too. The book does end on a bit of a cliffhanger, as the murder of Vlad's father isn't solved. I'll continue reading the books in this series not only because I enjoy Leslie North's writing, but because I'm also looking forward to Maxim and Dmitry's stories. I also want to know who did it! There are a couple of suspects and I have my own suspicions. I can't wait to find out if I'm right! It was a good, short read and I recommend it.

Would you listen to Her Ruthless Russian again? Why?
As my headline indicates, I would listen to this again. Our narrator does a great job of bringing this book to life. He had me so sucked into the story that I hated having to turn the car off.

What did you like best about this story?
I loved the tension that I could feeling coming through my car speakers. Both characters feel that they are right about the other but that doesn't stop other feelings from coming to the forefront. It mixes well with the mystery and suspense that surrounds Vlad's family. A great thing about listening to a story is that you get a different perspective about the characters.

Have you listened to any of D. C. Cole’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to one other of Mr. Cole's performances. It's hard to compare the two since the stories are different. Plus I don't feel that it's fair to either author to make any comparisons. The better question would be if I would listen to him again and that answer would be yes. He makes any commute so much more pleasurable and helps you get lost into the story he is telling.

Any additional comments?
This was a great way to start this series. I was a little disappointed that I couldn't see that there's another audiobook for the Karev Brothers but that won't stop me from seeing what these brothers have in store for me. Maybe by the time I get some more books read Maxim's story will be out than I have two books to enjoy during my commute. Also love me some romance when it's mixed with mystery and suspense in any form. Great job by both the author and the narrator.

An intriguing, amusing and passionate romance!

Her Ruthless Russian is a well-written entertaining story with a unique plot. There is a lot of action and suspense to grab your attention from beginning to end. This story was amusing and romantic. This story is so emotionally stimulating that you will not want to put it down once you start reading it. This book has a little of everything in it to keep you intrigued – suspense, romance, danger, steamy scenes and a happy ending.

The characters are well developed and engaging. It was easy to connect with them throughout the book. The banter between Madison and Vlad brought something distinct to the story that added to the enjoyment of reading it.

D.C. Cole’s performance added to the story making the experience enjoyable. He brought his own style to the characters. You can hear the passion in his performance with the concise and clear speech while adding depth to the story.

This was the second book from Leslie North that I have read and was not disappointed. I recommend Leslie North to anyone that wants to read a good suspense with some romance mingled in.

Madison manages an art gallery her father owns. He has also accepted "financing" from the Russian mob. Her goal is to remove the Russian mob's influence and financing.

Vlad was born into the Russian mob. His father was a substantial figure in the area, before he was brutally killed. Vlad's goal is to find the murderer.

In the beginning, both of their goals was to get information from the other but they didn't account for one thing, the immediate attraction they felt for one another.

I did like this story. Both characters were strong and knew what they wanted. I felt like it was an incomplete story though. Sure they finally realized their feelings for one another and accepted it but I never saw how their being together affected others...like how did her dad feel?

It is possible that I may find that out in the next brother's story but I shouldn't have too. The writing is good but I felt like something was left out.

I love Leslie North, and this Russian mafia book was a good short listen. This is the first in a new series having us meet Vlad and Madison(Maddie). The two are caught up in a situation that neither knows the entire extent of, what role each has, but we do have some diamonds! Love having couples that have some fire between them. The foreplay of the banter between the two is so much fun. Leslie North has a wonderful way of writing short books with such well developed characters, it makes it a pleasure to listen to. We have met Vlad's brothers and the book has definitely set us up for book two, am definitely looking forward to that.

One of my favorites, DC Cole is the narrator of this book. The man can read anything, but his bad boy mafia voice is perfect for this book. Hoping Leslie North keeps him to read the series, it will be a definite pleasure.

I never have been & never will be disappointed in any book written by Leslie North! Received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. She has a definite talent for writing books both individually and in a series......the characters and the books flow so smoothly together! In this book Maggie runs her family's art business & discovers that her father has become involved with the Russian mafia. Wanting to get them out from under the mafia she meets Vlad who wants to find out who murdered his father. They both become entangled in their efforts to solve their goals & use each other as a means to an end only to come to a conclusion that neither one expected!! A book most worthy of 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟's!!!
