Curl Up and Dye Mysteries #2

Something to Dye For

Rate this book
A phone call in the middle of the night forces Detective Gabriel Wyatt out of his warm bed and into the frigid night to identify the body of a murdered man whose wallet contains Gabe’s business card instead of an ID. That night sets off a chain of events that chills Gabe to his bones when it appears that the killer has set his eyes on a new target – Josh Roman.

Josh comes face-to-face with a painful reminder of his past just when he’s ready to acknowledge that his feelings for Gabe go way beyond liking the man. How can he trust that his feelings for Gabe are right when before he’d always been so wrong?

Will Josh and Gabe finally acknowledge that what they have is something to live for or will they allow danger and doubts to destroy their chance at something amazing?

Something to Dye For is book 2 in the Curl Up and Dye Mysteries series. These books are written to be read in order. They contain sexually explicit material and are intended for adults 18 and older.

I'm a wife and mother of three teenage kids. I've been married to the same wonderful man for twenty years. I've decided that if I can survive raising three kids then I can survive anything!! I haven't uttered the Mama's curse yet, but it could happen any day now. You know the one..."I hope you have a child just like you someday."

I'm an avid reader and lover of all things romance. I've spent my entire adult life waiting to follow my dreams of becoming a writer. One day this past summer, I decided to just do it. No more wishing and hoping. I haven't quit my day job, but that is my ultimate goal...make a living telling stories of love.

I write contemporary gay fiction. I hope you will love reading my books as much as I enjoy writing them.

Dyeing to be Loved surprised me with its smexy romance that was tightly interwoven with a murder mystery, and I really really enjoyed that experience. This sequel did not disappoint.

As Gabe and Josh are further solidifying their feelings, they are once again embroiled in a murder. This time around, the victim is someone Gabe knows which makes things all the more complicated. Toss in an unfortunate return of Josh’s past and these two have plenty to deal with while tiptoeing around how to define their new relationship status.

What they don’t tiptoe around ever is their undeniable attraction to one another, and I hate to say this but perhaps, it was just a bit overdone. However, I will never say no sexy Gabe getting it on (he’s now officially been promoted to the exalted book boyfriend shelf), so as he and Josh grapple with their feelings, their evolution was still very gratifying.

Overall, I definitely appreciate how this series still focuses so strongly on the love dynamic in and amongst the murder mystery, and as is often typical, the latter can dominate too much. Luckily for me, that's not the case here.

Again, I obviously enjoyed this hot couple and look forward to more! With a cliffhanger ending like that, I plan to return to these two soon!

I definitely enjoyed book 2 more than I did book 1 because there was no frustrating push/pull to deal with. Josh still had to deal with insecurities, but he didn't let it effect his relationship with Gabe. If anything Josh and Gabe were very lovey dovey. Maybe a bit too much ?😬 I love it when the MCs are affectionate, but ... Anyway, I'll take lovey dovey over push pull between these two.

The cases in the series so far are interesting enough. Nothing that involves much action or ah ha! Moments. Romance is definitely the focus and I'm okay with that. 😍

I'm not saying that this book series has a little bit of a soap opera vibe, but it does include murders, conspiracy, an oracle, and an actor who comes back as their own evil twin a twin.

Soap opera or insurance fraud? You decide.

So, this book is better than the first because the two mains are past the angst of getting together. Now they are at the stage of being sickeningly in love and it gets pretty schmaltzy sometimes. But, still better than the constant insecurities and picking flower petals from the first book.

Alright, geez! Don't get your book-panties in a bunch.

We start with the murder of a minor character in the last book. Gabe, a cop, gets involved and soon there are more murders and secrets being revealed. That part was pretty decent, but the thing I liked the most was the bringing more side-characters in and giving them dimension. I started to like many of them and could see future books for some of them. And, for the purpose of consistency, they all have plenty of their own angst. Since I don't have much angst in my own life I guess I am okay with fictional people's angst as entertainment.

Wow, that's impressive. I mean, how did she get someone with a wind machine to stand there in case she fell? I need people that supportive in my life.

Something to Dye For is the second book in the M/M romance series, the Curl Up & Dye Mysteries. Picking right up where book one left off and closing on a cliffhanger, these books are certainly meant to be read in release order and not as standalones!

This time around, things are going much, much better between hot detective Gabriel Wyatt and his sassy hair-stylist Josh Roman. They’re past most of their initial personal squabbles – which were mostly Josh’s to begin with – and are even close to admitting they are in an actual, functioning adult relationship, spending all their free time together, doting on one another in the sweetest of ways, and even coming close to admitting how much they want to co-habitat together.

As Gabe and Josh continue to grow as a couple, they also find themselves in the middle of yet another dangerous situation when a case (or two cases) Gabe is working on results in Josh becoming the new target of a potential killer.

I really enjoyed this sequel. The mystery component kept me well and truly engaged and guessing, but it wasn’t so prominent a plot focus to overwhelm the more personal moments between Gabe and Josh as a couple. I loved the way these two elements were balanced – it was practically pitch-perfect in that regard and it’s definitely an aspect of the storytelling I liked best.

Josh and Gabe were equal parts adorably couple-y and romantic here, but also still HOT AS SIN whenever it came time for these two to heat things up physically. I mean, YOWZA!

As I mentioned, this one ends on a pretty gobsmacking cliffhanger and it left me chomping at the bit to find out what will happen next for Gabe and Josh.

I sure am glad I stuck it out with the first book. If I had quit, I wouldn't have read any further in the series and I would have missed out on a fabulous couple. This one was great! I loved Josh and Gabe in the first book separately, but not much as a couple. Here, we get to see them actually just "be" and fully develop feelings for each other. I am so in love with them. On to the next one...

Something to Dye For is book 2 in Aimee Nicole Walker's "Curl up and Dye Series" and we are back with Josh and Gabe! This book is a true sequel and picks up where book one left off, so yes you need to read book one, Dyeing to be Loved , and read them in order.

This story is just as full of passion, mystery, happiness, and sexy times as book one and the chemistry between Gabe and Josh continues to grow and burn like an inferno. In addition, there is exceptional character growth for both of our guys as they settle into happiness with each other and their posse of pets. I enjoyed this story because we get to see our two guys grow as individuals and as a couple. It makes their story all the more happy, for me..when I get to see it.

The mystery in this story was slightly easier to guess but still well written. I am not telling what happens or who is involved, you gotta read it!

For us cover lovers, again - this cover is to DIE for - drool worthy and the men on the front are perfect representations of Gabe and Josh.

I recommend this story and series. A true success for Ms. Walker!

5 Stars! And as Savage would say "Big Daddy is in the House"

This is not for me.

The only real mystery here is why the series was named as such.
The mystery plot is totally secondary to Josh and Gabe. Not that I didn't want to know how their relationship (and they finally agree they have one) develops, but all in all ...

Not much happens at all in most of the book. Okay, we do get some minor excitement in the form of Billy, one of the guys from Josh's past who behaves like a real douchebag. Apart from that the plot felt flat and construed. Not even the could save the day!

But that's it. Josh and Gabe are totally happy with each other in book 2. Great! It was nice to see.
I seriously missed some emotional or plot-induced tension and suspense.

I think if you love virtually angst-free reads and also happen to be wildly interested in the ongoings of a hair salon (we get more or less a whole chapter about Josh rescuing customers from hair traumas!) you will enjoy this series. Unfortunately I'm not inclined that way.

Probably I am completely misunderstanding the meaning of it all. In that case - my aplogies to the author!

**** Gabe, our sexy detective gets a call to identify a body.

It's the man who asked him for help in book one, Nate.
Next comes the threats to Josh,

our Hair Salon owner and Gabe's boyfriend. There will be more threats also, like slashed tires, and pics, etc. As with our last story, we get witty banter, snarky comments, with wild and extremely sexy times, plus a twisty plot.

Lovable Josh and tough guy Gabe have been doing well. The events are making them even closer, stronger and more sure of each other. We see the pets once again, the cooking, the sexy lovin' and each man shares more of himself and his experiences.
Buddy

... Savage, the foul mouthed parrot...

This time around they travel to meet parents, and those visits are fun. When they get home, there's another threat on Josh's bed. In addition, the cops are dealing with a mysterious drug stash, and the continued puzzle of Nate's murder.

You'll like the progress the men make, and we look forward to more, but what will come next? It's a cliffhanger and a big shocker!
Love these guys, the story, the cast of characters, and the interesting, well developed tale.
I highly recommend this series. ENJOY !

ETA for audiobook: The narration just makes this better. Joel Leslie is absolutely sublime with great character voices, and impressive emotional range, terrific timing and pacing. Things that annoyed me when reading fell away completely when listening. That's just how good Joel Leslie is.

There's something about the Curl Up and Dye Mysteries series that pulls me in like a tractor beam. I love the supporting characters and seeing Josh and Gabe reach their full relationship potential is addicting.

Note that Something to Dye For ends with another mild cliffhanger ending that sets up the next book Dyed and Gone to Heaven. Hopefully book 3 will be recorded and released soon.

Recommended.

**~~**~~**~~ORIGINAL REVIEW~~**~~**~~**~~**

** Cliffhanger Alert **

The romance between Gabe and Josh is heating up. There's quite a few sexy scenes sure to please those who love seeing their MCs worlds get rocked. Sure, there were some pretty cheesy lovey-dovey interactions between Gabe and Josh, but I liked that they are becoming a truly established couple and cheesy sometimes works for me. In this case, all the endearments and sweet talk worked for me.

One of the things that's becoming a pattern and is really annoying for me personally is the way, once again, the mysteries are partially tied up mostly off page or told anecdotally. This grates on me quite a bit because I want to see the action - I want to be shown and not told. It's especially odd to me being that the series is told from both Josh and Gabe's points of view, so I don't understand the reason for the reader to only find out what happened when Gabe thinks about it later or explains something to Josh after the fact.

This ends with another cliffhanger ending, flowing straight in the next book. Luckily I already picked up book 3, Dyed and Gone to Heaven, on Kindle Unlimited and can dive right in.

There's definitely something about this series though that pulls me in like a tractor beam. I love the supporting characters and seeing Josh and Gabe reach their full relationship potential is addicting. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Note for the sticklers: There are some proofreading and editing errors which sometimes took me out of the story, but weren't egregious.

Ah, I love Sunshine Josh! 🥰

I really like Gabe and Josh together, their relationship slowly growing stronger. Yes, Josh still has to deal with insecurities, but you just have to love him, he's just this sassy Sunshine!
Though the romance is dominant to the story, of course there's also cases to solve. Some of the mystery gets solved but not all, that's left open for the next book.

These two are so perfect together- Gabe adores his Sunshine Josh and his Alpha protective mode comes out when Josh is threatened. The dramas continue as always but the depth of love between Josh & Gabe only deepens. I really loved the chemistry and intimacy between them..... damn that it ended with a cliffy- sure hope book 3 is ready to go asap !

I still had fun, though I see the overly cute, and kind of forced joking (Aimee is kind of trying too hard to be funny/cute/romantic/dramatic) going on that made me stop reading the series. I am pushing through and going to read this to the last book, even if it kills me!

Rating remains the same and below still true. Book 3 coming up!

2017 Review
Gabe and Josh are such a cute couple. The mystery/murder is secondary for me to their relationship. I find myself not caring about the police investigation when it's not related to Josh. I just think this guys are so cute and cuddly. Highly recommend for the adorbs factor. This does end on a sort of cliffhanger -

This book just has everything I like in a lighthearted story.

4 stars because the ending just seemed to abruptly fizzle and lead into the cliffhanger for book 3. I was at 95% when I realized there wasn't going to be some dramatic guns ablazing ending.

Still am not on board with the voice Joel uses for Gabe, but OMG his Josh is perfection. Even better the second time around, too. (That cliffhanger ending is a doozy, despite knowing what comes next anyway.)

Original Rating 23May2017: 4.2 Stars

What the heck is up with that ending? It felt so abrupt...and yet unresolved at the same time.

Otherwise, I loved the characters & their relationship. I love how they talk things out and face things head-on; no miscommunications or avoidance here! Plus, I still think this series has the hottest set of covers.

Definitely gonna read the next one because OMG...that ending.

So this book was... ok.

For half a book.

When everyone was talking about cliffhangers, I'm not really sure what I was thinking, but it wasn't that the whole thing would just straight up be a two-parter. I mean, I finished the book, but the book isn't done.

Annoying

As for what was in the book? It was just more of what was in the first with some notable and unfortunate exceptions. More Josh & Gabe. More sexy sex. More quirk. More twee. However, one thing that there is not nearly enough 'more' of were Josh's friends. I heart Mere and Chaz and their banter, and they were in there a little, but not nearly enough to balance out the ooey gooey sentimentality that was dripping down the walls in the Josh & Gabe corner.

I demand more Mere & Chaz.

Beyond that, the writing style really started to grate on me. Normally, I don't quibble with style, because every writer has their own and that's fine. But the explanations. Dear God, every single teeny tiny tid bit is explained. Unnecessarily

So I stuck this in a spoiler tag, because it got a little preachy and ranty about writery shit. Feel free to skip or just read this lovely article about why you shouldn't a) explain crap that people can clearly see for themselves or b) write so ambiguously that an explanation is necessary in the first place.

So rating this book was hard, because it had its moments. But there were parts that felt like they were stuck in there For Reasons That Will Be Revealed Later and not because the story really needed that, and I found myself checking how much time was left multiple times. I finished, but the story isn't finished, so now I feel roped into the next book, because despite my annoyances, I do kind of want to know if we're going where I think we're going.

Maybe I'll take a break, though, because I don't think I can take anymore explanations right now.

This is book two in Aimee Nicole Walker’s Curl Up & Dye Mysteries. When we first met Gabe and Josh they were at each other’s throats. It was almost too much for my heart to take. When book one ended they were together and happy.
In Something to Dye For they are blissfully in love.

I can’t begin to tell you how much enjoyment I got out of these two when they were loving all over each other. Josh… he's come so far in this book and I admired his strength in every aspect.

Gabe, seriously? Can he be any more amazing!? I just can’t! I don’t honestly know who I love more. So I am going to go love them both.

Through this amazing lovefest there is of course a mystery going on. The books overlap so you have to read them in order. We left book one with a murder and it picks right back up where that left off. And this one ALSO ends on a cliffy. There always seems to be two mysteries happening at once and one is always solved while the other (that is linked to the one solved) is ongoing. To find out the end game you need to read on.

It’s very clever and well put together. Aimee keeps you on the edge of your seat all the while you’re swooning over Josh and Gabe! It’s a marvelously constructed story. I can’t wait until book 3! *Grabby Hands*

I love a book that picks up right where the last book ended and this one does just that.

There is so much goodness happening in this one and I really enjoyed it so much more than the last book. I feel like that is going to be a reoccurring event with this series.

First off I have to talk about the relationship between Josh and Gabe. I didn't say much about it in my review for the first book because I felt like they were still on shaky ground. Not the case at all in this book. I love how the author is developing this relationship. I love seeing in every chapter how much growth both characters show personally and in their relationship. The chemistry is off the charts and so is the obvious love they have for each other.

This one had another great mystery that I was clueless in solving and had some great surprises thrown into the mix. I won't go into it because that would just spoil it.

This is shaping up to be a really enjoyable series.

Happy reading dolls! xx

Good Follow up to First Book.

I'm really enjoying this series. I like both Josh and Gabe, and the way their relationship is developing. There are some decent secondary characters too. I'm finding the mystery element quite intriguing as well. Good second in the series, I personally think you need to read the first in the series to follow what's going on. Looking forward to the next book. Recommended.

I enjoyed this book so much more than I did the first one. The push/pull in the first book was just too much back and forth for me so I liked that although Josh still had his insecurities he didn't let it affect his relationship dramatically. I really liked Gabe and Josh in this book and their relationship as it continues to grow stronger. This book had an interesting mystery that although you thought you knew the answer there were enough questions to keep me unsure throughout. One part of the mystery is solved but another is left open for the next book. I enjoyed the intrigue and mystery and thought the balance between romance/mystery was spot on.

I wasn't sure I was going to continue with this series after the first book but now I'm on board and looking forward to much more from Gabe and Josh.

Incredible! I loved this book so much. Because this is the second book in this series, all the characters have been established, and Gabe and Josh have already had their bumps and miscommunication in getting together, so this book felt like it flowed so much better. I didn't warm up to Josh as much in the first book, but I loved him in this one! Because we got more of a glimpse into his past and what happened to him, he was so much easier to understand. And his banter with Gabe was so hilarious. I love this world Aimee has created, and Gabe and Josh are definitely one of my favourite couples to read about. There is still the ongoing mystery, and I can't wait to dive into book three to find out some answers, as well as watch Gabe and Josh grow together and see what other fun situations they find themselves in. I recommend to fans of m/m romance.

Maybe it's the audio that makes this series just meh for me. This one was so predictable with who was watching and taking pictures of Josh. I was really hoping there was going to be a huge twist I didn't see coming...no luck. I had it pegged from the first chapter.

I am curious to see how the twist from the epilogue will play out in the next book.
