Ariana

Betrayal. The pain and rage that consumed me was unbearable. My perfect reality had become my hurtful one. Loss of illusion settled inside me and constricted the air I breathed. I felt as if my entire life was a lie. Fresh out of law school, I needed a new start and to put the pieces of my life back together. When I left Boston and moved to New York, I met Luca Russo, a high powered, sexy attorney who liked control. He took me under his wing and did things for me no other man had ever done. Everything comes with a price, and mine was falling for a man who couldn’t return my affection. Then one night tragedy struck and he needed my help. That was the night I became his defense.

Luca
There wasn’t anyone or anything I couldn’t control. I thrived on it. It made me who I was. Some called me ruthless because I played dirty in the courtroom, and some called me a man-whore because I liked to sleep with women but refused to give them anything more. I was a thirty-year-old man with the world at his fingertips. I had a successful career that I loved, a luxury apartment on Park Avenue, and the company of any beautiful woman I wanted at any time. Then Ariana Williams walked into my firm and left me breathless. The chemistry between us was undeniable. But I had a past and a secret I never wanted her to know, so I had to walk away. Then one tragic night I needed her, and now she holds the fate of my life in her hands.

All in all, just...Mmmmmeh.

The premise was great and there was actually a LOT of potential for some awesomeness here...but the characters were never developed past the surface.

Ariana was too perfect.

As in, she's fresh out of Harvard law.

Where she was also Valedictorian of her class. Of course.

President of some big deal debate team...of course.

And gets a perfect score when she takes the Bar Exam...
...but, of course.

description

Plus, once we get to the main "plot spin" case of the whole book, it almost read like a cheap "whodunit."

With Ariana - the fresh out of law school this-be-her-first-case-homies self being cast as the unflappable Jessica Fletcher of Murder She Wrote fame.

description

Never seen Murder She Wrote?

There is some 80's brilliance you need to get a hold of. STAT.

If Angela Lansbury can't solve the case, no one can, peeps.

But anyway.

Campy murder mysteries aside...this book was just way different than I thought it would be.

Not sure what kind of tone the author was going for, but I think I was expecting more of a The Good Wife appeal...and I felt like I got Legally Blonde.

Everything was a little to campy, too perfect, and too easily solved.
On ALL accounts.

I don’t have legal education, so I don’t feel comfortable to brag with random legal terms and complain about many legal flops inaccuracies in this book; but as a person who watches/reads the news and likes detective novels, I saw many bloopers some legal errata. Speaking about "chain of custody" (the term denotes the links in the handling of the exhibit in question: details of the item, the place, date, time it was recovered, and by whom it was recovered etc.) – it wasn’t followed at all – the h discovered some exhibits by and on her own *eye roll*. Even if I’m not quite right here, the fact that the h as a defense attorney slept with her client=the H was unethical. The h acted immature, amateurish and ragged. Her supposedly high educated, sharp-minded character was exaggerated and hard to believe.

My biggest trigger and the main reason for poor rating was h’s complete shellfish, inexcusable, unmoral behavior towards her family. The big betrayal mentioned in the blurb was not big enough to justify h’s action; she abandoned the people who raised her, loved her, gave her good life and good education - who were her Family!!! The “secret” h discovered at the beginning was not simple and light, but it gave her no right to treat her family the way she did! She was and remained till the end heartless spoiled brat!

As to the romance part, well… there was another disgusting manwhore who used his childhood drama to wallow in self-pity (and apparently self-doubt), who screwed around and treated women as trash. Nothing new, nothing unique…
The OW scene at the beginning (the morning after) - when he kicked her out - had apparently the purpose to emphasize his sexiness and alpha-maleness… well, it did the opposite to me. Shallow character. I couldn’t find anything I liked about him, he was and remained till the end narcissistic jerk – at least he was constant…

Safe sex was unfortunately non-existent. I couldn’t believe that the author who made her MCs in the previous book get tested and only after exchanging the results the condoms were skipped, let the H & h in this book have sex without protection every single time! Their first time was max 1 week after his hook-up with random OW and he just told the h he didn’t want to wear condom (and he were allegedly clean) and she agreed. Are you kidding me?! But then he f’cked her without condom after 1 month separation (and it wasn’t mentioned if he was celibate), and the cherry on top (I had to reread it 3 times to be sure I got it right) – the h let him have sex with her without condom the night after she bailed him from jail – he was accused of murder with suspect to have sex with the victim before the crime! Shall I continue?! I think it was enough crap.

The last thing I’d like to mention and then I quit: cheating. During one month separation h met a nice guy and they went out a couple of times. They didn’t have sex yet, but she liked him and he was if not quite her bf, but potential one! After one date with him she lied to feel bad and didn’t invite him to her apartment only to find the H at her door and… she had sex with the H (of course without condom). It was cheating for me.

There were many other things I could comment on, but sorry, guys, I just can’t anymore and don’t want to.
Move on…

My God, obožavam kako ova žena piše priče! Jednostavne a tako savršene. Nisam očekivala ništa posebno, samo jednu običnu romansu, ali me je Sandi opet iznenadila. Prosto moram prvom prilikom nabaviti ovu knjigu. #MustHave #MustRead

Ariana Williams fresh out of law school and on the brink of taking her bar exam leaves her family home when she finds out they have been keeping a secret from her for her whole life. Needing a new start Ariana moves to New York meeting up with an old BFF who gets Ariana a job as a temporary secretary at the law firm that she works for. High powered lawyer Luca Russo takes Ariana under his wing and arranges not only for somewhere for her to live but also for her to take her bar exam then hires her as his own attorney when he is framed for murder. I have read other books by this author and really enjoyed them, but this book started off with promise that quickly spiraled into a ridiculous, immature relationship between an arrogant alpha who buys Ariana's attentions and she takes it all. The sex was mediocre, the characters were really annoying, shallow and immature and the story line was predictable and boring.

I'm not sure about this one. Need more reviews. A woman fresh out of law school is hired by the hero to work in his firm and she already is going to be a defense attorney? Like 1st chair? No way even in la la land. Too fantastic.
So... need more investigation

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE : after a GR friend messaged me with info about this book this became a NO WAY book.
Her info makes me believe this one of the worst/disgusting plots.
And the betrayal: for the love of anybody, talk about poor rich spoiled brat bitch. Big trigger for me too. I hate the spoiled immature heroine.
I hope she writes a review so other readers will not be misled by the 4,5 stars reviews.
And I'm disappointed because I liked her BLACK series.
And here it's the link for a review that sustains my avoidance

Exam Q: To what extent can an author make your eye twitch from the excessive dimwittedness presented by the protagonist in her novel, "Defense". Discuss.

"Olivia and I hailed a cab and rode into the office together.”

Hey Arianna, why don't you take public transport considering you were ... you know ... struggling for cash.

I looked around one last time, arranging furniture in my head.
“All right. I’ll take it,” I spoke with excitement.”

Hey Arianna, for a Harvard graduate lawyer you don't seem too smart buying the first apartment you're shown by a realtor.

“On a scoring system of 400 points, you need at least a 265 to pass the bar. You, my dear, scored a perfect 400.”

Hey Arianna, is this a fucking joke? You study for the bar exam a few days prior, when others spend months in advance and got the "perfect score". Of course. Girl, this is too much for me.

"I kept busy and buried myself in my work, went to strip clubs with Brad, and drank more than I should have."

Sleeze bag. Hey Arianna, this is the guy you're crazy for. The man who bailed on you three times now - yes three - but the second he turns up at your doorstep you drop your panties. That's just pathetic.

"What is your name?” I asked.
“Aiden York.”
“To answer your question, Mr. York, I am the best.” I raised my brow with a smirk. “And when we win this case, I expect an apology from you for judging me without even knowing me or my skills. Have a good day.” I walked into the building.”

Oh my god - huurrrrrrllllllll.

"My mother is Julia Brooks, who for the last twenty-five years pretended to be my sister. And my parents, whom I called mom and dad all these years, are my grandparents,” she spoke as tears filled her eyes.”

Call me apathetic and cynical but, Arianna - honey you aren't going to die. To be fair, your mother didn't abandon you or leave you to be adopted by another family. She was in your life. I'm sure you can get over it.

And finally - the epilogue topped it all off and I just - couldn't deal.

“To my two beautiful children. The best things in life are yet to come for you. Congratulations on getting into Harvard. Your mom and I love you both very much and are so proud of you.”
“Thanks, Dad. We love both of you too.”

Kill me.

P.S. I realise I spelt her name wrong. I can't be bothered to go back and change it.

After spending over 40 years in the legal field and 30 in the chambers of a federal judge, this was beyond my ability to expand sensibilities to accept the procedures followed herein. I didn't like the lead characters from start to finish. Writing was jagged and felt off-centered throughout. Not for me -- I like a little more research and substantially provable facts. And the sexual content was less than meaningful - more robotic than anything else.

I was excited for this book's release from the book blurb and the fact that it was wrapped around the legal world. Sadly, it was disappointing.

I liked this up until I realized the big secret that Arianna left Boston and her family for. Maybe I’m insensitive, but I thought it was dumb for her to act that way. Things could have been much worse. Plus, the more I read, the more I realized that I didn’t really like the heroine all that much. The book would want you to believe she has no flaws, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. It became clear that she wasn’t as amazing as the author would have you believe. Especially in the way that she treated her family. I can’t get over it or sympathize with that.

To me, the characters were too immature and shallow for me to believe they were “intelligent lawyers”. But the book entertained me enough that it didn’t matter how ridiculous and unrealistic it was. The murder mystery was the only thing that completely saved the book for me. It was obvious but I still had to know how everything came to fruition. While I liked the story, it’s not one I care to read again after this.

It is no secret that I am a big fan of Sandi Lynn. I absolutely love everything she has written. She's the queen of writing hot millionaire romances. Defense is no exception.

Luca Russo is a rich, high powered, sexy as sin attorney who is a player who loves to be in control both in and out of the court room. He felt out of control in his childhood and his past secrets made him who he is today. When he met Ariana Williams he lost some of that hard-fought control, which made me love him even more.

Ariana is a brilliant and determined woman who just found out news from her family that left her feeling pain, anger, and betrayal. She was so devastated that she left her family the night she graduated law school and moved to New York. She meets Luca and you can immediately feel the chemistry between the two of them. What I love about her is that she could give just as good as she could get. What she wasn't prepared for was falling for this seemingly unreachable man who could give her everything but his heart.

I couldn't put this book down. Once Luca finds himself in for the fight of his life, the intensity of this book goes up even more. Ariana is the one person who can save him from his past and his present. Get ready for the mystery, suspense, passion and falling head over heels for these two strong willed attorneys.

The verdict is out and this book is definitely five stars.

Let me begin by saying, I was not asked to give a review and am not a friend of the author. This is my honest opinion.

I'd say I'm speechless but I've got plenty to say. Defense was undeniably executed with such finesse to exceed all of ones expectations. Just magnificent.

I loved both the hero (Luca) and heroine (Ariana). Luca Russo, a brilliant Defense (criminal) attorney, residing and practicing in New York City, partner with the majority shares at his law firm. Alpha male, handsome, sexy, controlling in every way imaginable until he encounters Ariana Williams, a beyond brilliant heroine, genius one could say, beautiful, sexy, feisty, extremely driven and focused, law student anticipating the bar exam, originally from Boston now residing in New York City. Both are exceptionally and equally sharp, precise, strong, resilient individuals in all areas of their lives, controlled and extremely stubborn for dominance. Their coupling is exhilarating, powerful and sexy; together they're a force to be reckoned with. Spoilers, you won't find any here, read the book, like yesterday, it's that special. Honestly, spectacular and magnificent.

The romance and suspense are equally thrilling, literally this is a book one will not want to put down. This book left nothing unturned, every single question, problem, prediction or promise made was answered to ones satisfaction by the end of the book and then some. The setting is in New York City, which most of Sandi Lynn's books are either in New York or someone is tied to it somehow. I could be wrong but I believe Sandi herself is from Texas, with that said, I'm a New Yorker and can tell you her details are mostly accurate, those that aren't are pretty close and honestly who cares really? Romance thrillers are supposed to be of the imagination, a fairy tale, readers want to get absorbed in, lost really, removing themselves for a short time from their every day busy, hectic and stressful lives, the "make believe".

Cliffhanger, no. Story... blown away, incredible, brilliant, just spectacular, all of it, the twists and turns, all of the secrets. Hero and heroine, amazing. Cheating, no. HEA, yes! It's sexy, steamy and hot too. Cursing, yes. Some secondary characters are just as important as the hero and heroine. Typos, errors, few that I can think of and grammar critics please refrain from judgment, this book should not be looked at through a microscope. It's undeserving to this talented author's book, the work she put into it excels beyond all expectations. There's no room for that here. The ending is not rushed and has a beautiful, fulfilling epilogue.

I have read most books by Sandi Lynn, not all, and I will admit it was her Forever Series that introduced me to her work. That will always remain my favorite, personally, well, now Defense is definitely second and she's had some others released that were very good. Too bad the rating is only 5 stars, this goes way beyond the 5 allowed.

One of my favorite lines "She can shove her fifty years up her c*%t" What happens around that line, the incidents surrounding it, makes the one statement have you laughing and shocked out of nowhere.

If my review entices you, please download this book now. Do it with time on your hands because I promise you will not want to put this down.

Enjoy!

Defense

Be prepared! To be so into this story! It will take hold of you, keep you, make you wonder, question everyone? This story is so intense, has so many unanswered questions, you will want to keep reading to just find out a little more, then a little more. So get ready for the journey of your life with Luca and Ariana. Great story full of so much suspicion, lies, setting someone up, murder, lust, revenge, it has it all. Enjoy!!!

This is some new elements in hers. This time talking about a trail. She is the new graduated from law school, new practice lawyer n saved him for second degree murder.

It remainder me watching a tv series, a good wife, the people in the law firm, they may be the guy who fight for justice, but they didn't. It's ugly when it came to money, greed, power n revenge.

The secret of Ari was not that bad, at least she has a completed family to protect her, her biological parents still there n doing great because they both r surgeon. Ari's life not that bad, much better than the others. Luke worse than her because he was abused, n facing two murder trail.

What a great book

Just when I think the author has written her best book yet, she slays it with something completely different. I love books about the law and this one didn't disappoint. I read it in one day ( I took a break to go to a billy Joel concert) and when I got home I finished the book!! Can't wait to see what she comes out with next!! I hope we don't have to wait too long

Luca doesn't know what hit him.

Ariana just left Boston and rushed to an old best friend in New York City. She just graduated top of her law class with a 4.0 GPA. She also just gave the valedictorian speech. Then she heard a family secret and had to leave.

Ariana stays over in Olivia and Harry's spare bedroom. The three have a past because Ariana was dating Harry when her best friend Olivia told her that she was in love with Harry. Now 4 years later, she needs her old friend.

Needing a job, Ariana is searching everywhere. But all she can find are positions that don't pay well. So when she stops at Olivia's job to meet for lunch, she meets a very handsome man answering phones. He just stares at her. When she asks for Olivia he watches her walk away.

Being desperately in need of a secretary he offers the position to Ariana. But the player he's always been is in for a shock. Ariana denies him at every turn. Then he helps her get signed up for the state bar and calls in favors.

Now after working for Luca's firm, Ariana feels compromised and quits. Then a week later she gets a desperate phone call from Luca. He's in jail for a murder he swears he didn't commit and he needs her help.

Can she work with him again? And can she find all the evidence they need to get him free?

Wow! Both have secrets and it's intense. Must read story. Enjoy

Ona przyszła prawniczka, on wzięty adwokat, współwłaściciel świetnie prosperującej kancelarii.

Sandi Lynn always writes really hot books but this one was more on the sweet side and definitely more on the legal side. I enjoyed it. It was exciting and I finished it in one sitting, not wanting to turn it off. The only issue I did have was that I did felt a slight drag in the middle but after that hump, it was great and I loved listening.

Veronica Worthington was fantastic. Perfect for this character. Very serious when she needed to be, very sexy when she needed to be. Her pacing was on target and her tone was great. I have less accolades for Tyler Donne. His voice sounded a little too old, which would be ok but he would pause is weird areas and then not pause between narrative so I would never know when a character changed speaking. It made it difficult to follow along. But overall the narration wasn't too bad.

Ariana is running away from her life after she's overheard her family talking about the biggest secret and lie of her life. Going off to new york to start fresh she meets sexy millionaire attorney Luca who hires the sexy young woman hes very drawn to. Though she's very hesitant at first because of his playboy ways she opens up to him and quickly falls only to be let down. But him needing her to literally save his life from being framed for a crime he didn't commit can she put her hurt feelings to the side and find a way to free him? I must say I wasn't expecting the twists and turns and the great story line that it ended up being. All the characters were really great no whiny annoying stupid females and no overly dominant male who thinks hes gods gift it was an honest change I highly recommends this book it's actually a quick read.

I listened to the Audiobook of this and the narrators were both very good. I really liked the story line even if at times what was happening seemed a bit unrealistic. However, this is just a story meant for entertainment purposes so that's okay with me. I liked the relationship between Luca and Ariana; they are both very strong characters and are super sexy, hot and steamy. Ariana does not take any crap from anyone including Luca. I admire that about her. Luca is gobsmacked by Ariana from the moment he meets her and that is definitely not something he is used to at all. I loved watching him fall. She is also a damn good attorney, especially for one so new and that turns out to be the best thing ever for Luca.
Love the ending and the epilogue!
