Where There's Smoke #1

Fighting the Flames

Rate this book
Where there’s smoke, Maddox jumps into the flames.
Maddox has been battling California’s wildfires for years. As a smokejumper, he’s trained to take action first and think second, but when he sees the cabin his best buddy owned before his death surrounded by a wall of fire, he can only think of his friend’s widow.
Sydney came to the cabin to ready it to sell. The place holds too many memories for her peace of mind, and after three years of grieving, she’s ready to take a deep breath and move on. But she can’t do that smothered in her cabin.
When the smoke clears…
Maddox needs to evacuate the curvy vixen he has thought about too much since his friend’s passing, but the stubborn woman won’t leave. The team is short-handed, and she’s determined to get hands-on training. Cutting, shoveling, digging—all those things should wear out a woman of her size, but she still has amazing stamina in his bed—as well as bent over logs and pinned against trees.
The smokejumpers aren’t dropped into the danger zone with any water to fight the blaze, which is good because Sydney doesn’t want to douse what she has with Maddox. The sexy firefighter is everything she could want in a lover, and his link to her past makes her feel what they have is real. Until they’re back at base and no longer feeling the heat.
Maddox may never see her as more than his friend’s widow, but Sydney believes this is more than a danger-zone fling.

I loved this book! Not just the sexual chemistry between Maddox and Sydney, which is undoubtedly hot, but the way the characters were portrayed--their own private needs, desires, and demons. Super hot sex, an interesting plot, and deep characters that we like right away, make this worthwhile. If you want a short read with a great story and some hot sex action, well this book is for you!

The first book in the series and it is hot! Maddox has been a firefighter his whole life working as a smoke jumper is all he wants to do. They are fighting a fire and he discovers his deceased best friend's wife is in the cabin that the wildfire is trying to overtake. He calls his buddies on the line and they save the cabin and her. His buddy died in a fire and his wife gave up her job as a firefighter, but she is determined to stay with them and help fight the wildfire until they are through. Maddox becomes attracted to her while being very protective and his buddies take notice. The attraction he fights, but she feels it also. This book has tender moments and strong characters and very hot scenes. Can't wait to read more!

This is the first book in a new series by Em Petrova, Where There's Smoke. Let me just say it was totally HOT! The fires that those smokejumpers fight have nothing on the chemistry that Maddox and Sydney shared as the story unfolded. They were beautifully developed and the setting, as well as the fabulous cast of supporting characters, only added to this story's ability to grip the reader by the heartstrings, hanging on tight until the inevitable conclusion.

Maddox was a smokejumper, a firefighter who jumped from a plan strapped with their supplies prepared to due battle with blazing wildfires. He was not, however, prepared for the fire present when he saw Sydney again. She was the widow of his fellow smokejumper, Carter, who died on the job 3 years prior.

Sydney was preparing to sell Rob's cabin., "their" cabin, when there was a fire. Seeing Maddox again reignited fire within her too. Maddox faught himself, and his desire for his best friend's widow, but failed miserably. Sydney not only had passion and chemistry with Maddox, she missed firefighting.

After helping fight the fire, she got injured. Furious at his crew, he took her to safety. He was relieved she was fimally going to be safe, but he was not prepared for how much he would miss her. Once she recovered, Sydney trained and joined their team perminently. NO WAY! No matter how it killed him, he shut her out. His "brothers" thought it was guilt over Rob that tore their relationship apart. Nope. Maddox could not stand her being in danger. Sydney would not stand in Maddox way, or hurt him further.

Find out if there is a ray of hope for these two lost, stubborn souls!

Sydney was getting ready to sell her and her dead husband, Rob's cabin. A fire broke out and the realtor left her. Se didn't panic much, because she was a firefighter in the city. Rob, was a smokejumper and she presumed a team would be on the way to try to suppress the fire. Maddox, secretly crushed on Sydney. He felt guilt from liking his friend's wife and from survivor's guilt. He felt protective of Sydney. He knew she was strong, skilled and determined, but he saw her as a woman first. Sydney, already liked Maddox. Now that she was coming out of her grieving hibernation, she accepted feeling lust for Maddox. As her exit, she chose to work the fire rather than take a chopper out. These two did the respect my career, I feel so guilty dance. Who will win? Can they both find a winning balance? Can macho Maddox respect Syd's choices? Nice story. Maddox's anger issues were not attractive. They were over the top for a man in his profession. I received an ARC from Booksprout and am volntarily leaving a review. Nice cover art!

Sydney's husband, Rob, a California smoke jumper, died fighting a fire. She was a city firefighter, and left that for a safer job. It's been three years, and as she begins to move on, the decides to sell their cabin. She and a realtor drive to the cabin, but when a fire threatens, he leaves her there. Where Maddox finds her. Maddox and Rob were teammates, and Rob's death hit everyone hard. She begins to help fight the fire, refusing to leave the forest. Their attraction is combustible, and they act accordingly. But he has guilt feelings - after all, she's Rob's widow. I loved this book, my second from this author. The characters, all of them, are caring friends, looking out for each other both in the arena and out, and I'm glad to see Maddox and Syd work toward their happy ending. The story was action-packed, and grabbed me from the beginning. I'm reading the next book right now, and looking forward to more of this author's work.

Maddox is a smokejumper who takes action first and thinks second. When he sees the cabin that belonged to his best friend, Rob, all he thinks about is his widow, Sydney.
Sydney came back after three years of grieving, thinking about selling the cabin, when she noticed that a wild fire was close. The real estate agent leaves her stranded, making her think about how to save the cabin. Now she is a fire fighter from a small town, but has no experience in smokejumping, except for what her husband told her. When they get close to the cabin they notice smoke.
Then the cowardly real estate agent leaves alone.
Maddox finds Sydney trying to save the cabin and tries to evacuate her, but she will not leave.
Will Maddox and Sydney make it out of the flames untouched? Will they combust together?
You have got to read this great story and find out for yourselves.
This is the start of a wonderful new series.

This is a great start to a new series!

Fighting the Flames is based in California where Wildfires, run wild (no pun intended) and Smoke jumpers are needed to fight the fires. Maddox has been in love with Syd for as long as he can remember. The only problem is, Syd is his buddies widow. When he finds out her cabin is in the path of the latest wild fire, he finds himself headed there to save it, not realizing that Syd is in the deadly fires path as well.

Syd is finally ready to move on. It's been 3 years since her husband passed away, and she heads up to the cabin with a realtor to sell it. Little does she know, that wild fires are headed her way and putting her dreams up in smoke. Praying for help, she hopes things are saved. Her prayers are answered in the form of Maddox and his team of Smoke jumpers that were also her husbands workmates.

Things heat up quickly for Syd and Maddox.

Strong story line. Awesome characters. Easy to visualize detailed descriptions. Written as a 3rd person, multi pov, with a HFN ending.

Would I recommend this book? Yes

This addictive romance really brings the heat!

Maddox and his team of smoke jumpers are fighting a fire near the vacation cabin of a team member who died in the line of duty three years earlier. He finds Sydney, Rob's widow, stranded there and with her own experience as a former city firefighter and her refusal to be evacuated, Maddox reluctantly allows her to join his team as they battle this blaze.

Let me tell you right now, that forest fire is the coldest flame they're fighting! The inferno that is building between Maddox and Sydney is hotter than the surface of the sun, and it's all they can do to keep their focus on surviving both their attraction and the raging wildfire. Once they're back on base, Sydney is determined to train and qualify as a member of their team, despite Maddox's refusal to consider the possibility.

This book is a hotter-than-hot romance as well as an outstanding introduction to the training and work that these special firefighting forces embody. Stationed in an unidentified Northern California location, there's a solid ring of authenticity and attention to detail that supports the love story without distracting from it.

Maddox and Sydney have a lot of emotional baggage to work through, making their HEA all that much sweeter. This is one of the best firefighter romances I've ever read. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

This was a very enjoyable book and gives the reader lots of respect for the job those smokejumpers do (and firefighters in general)! In this story, we meet Maddox, a smokejumper, who jumps into blazing wildfires to save lives and property. This time, his battle was more personal as he was reconnected to Sydney, the widow of a smokejumper buddy who died in the line of duty 3 years previously. Sydney was right in the middle of things, having been getting her cabin ready to sell. Because she used to be a firefighter in the city, she refused to leave the dangerous area, choosing to help fight the flames. Being back together again, things heat up quickly between Syd and Maddox as their own chemistry ignites.

I loved the story line and the wonderful characters. Sydney was a strong woman who knew her mind and followed her heart. The descriptions setting the scene for the reader were awesome and made what was going on feel very real. Where will Maddox and Sydney go from here? Can he comfortably work by her side? Will they pursue their own HEA?

Book 1 of a steamy new series about sexy firefighters and the strong women in their lives.
Book one is the story of Sydney a young widow of a California Flame jumper, she is trying to move on after 3 years of grieving. She finds herself in the woods. at a cabin in the middle of a forest fire. She is rescued by Maddox , her dead husband'sfellow friend and firefighter. These two fight their attraction to each other, and they fight the forest fire together.
Can they work through the guilt over their attraction, Maddox's need to protect Sydney's need to go back to work as a firefighter, and can they combine their love and careers? A very steamy and quick read. This promises to be a fun series.

This was a really good book. It’s a quick read but I don’t feel like I was cheated out of a story. The author manages to develop a good story and likeable characters without taking several chapters to do it. I’m looking forward to reading the next story.

Maddox and Sydney know each other. Syd was married to Maddox best friend and fellow smokejumper. Maddox never had feelings for Syd. After her husband died doing the job he loved so much she retired from firefighting and drops off the map.

Fast forward three years, Syd is ready to move on with her life and heads back to sell their vacation cabin. She gets caught in a fire and Maddox and his team up to save the day. There is an instant attraction to each other, but Maddox is feeling guilty for wanting his buddy’s wife. Can they work through things are will Maddox let Syd go because of misplaced guilt?

This is a great story! I couldn’t put it down. I didn’t want it to end. I love reading anything by Em Petrova.

Sydney is back at her old place when a wildfire breaks out. She is looking to sell it because the memories are to much. She lost her smokejumper husband three years before. She is rescued by Maddox who worked with her husband. Instead of going to safety, she pitches in to help battle the fire with the smokejumpers. Maddox wants Sydney but tries to stay focus on the job. Their attraction is off the charts. Will they find their happy ever after?

Her husband's team jumps to help put out the fire. Maddox, a friend of her husband's goes to the cabin and finds her there. She decides to help the smokejumpers with the fire. This is another first class story from Em Petrova. She has a way of making you feel like you are right there with her characters. I felt like I was watching everything. Several years after Syd's husband was killed on the job she is ready to begin living her life again. A wildfire threatens the cabin getaway she and Ryan shared. When the smoke jumpers drop in the first person she sees is Ryan's best friend, Maddox. The platonic closeness they shared before is growing just as fast and hot as the wildfire they are fighting. Syd has her priorities in hand, but Maddox is fighting with his feelings. He loves her but he's having trouble with the "best friend's widow" stigma only he feels. He does make me laugh, though. He's trying to make her uncomfortable enough to "stay out of danger" so he ignores her. Yet, when anyone else tries to take to her or help her he growls at them. Such a touching story with realism to make it an outstanding read. I requested an advanced reader copy from Booksprout and am under no obligation to leave this review.

Heated romance…

Friends to lovers was no stretch at all when Maddox and Sydney meet again. Sydney is starting to come out of her grief even as she is haunted by what might have been. She pulled away from his friends who were too close to what took him away from her. Just as she was starting to look forward again, Maddox pulled her right back in…

What happens when you fall in love with someone whose job was dangerous. Every second, minute and day could be the one where he (or she) doesn’t make it home. Smokejumpers work in he** on earth and Maddox couldn’t leave what he loved, no matter the potential costs. The question was, could Sydney be okay with that?

Oh, the emotions were high as the flames between these two raged higher at times than the fires Maddox fought. There was no denying the chemistry but fear is a powerful thing, one that has derailed many. How they navigated those fears, and the flames that surrounded them, made a action-packed start to this new series!

*I happily reviewed this story

Oh WOW! What to do when you're doing your job and come across your friend's widow? Maddox has dropped into the woods near Rob & Syndey's cabin as a smoke jumper to help put out the fire heading towards it. Some instinct told him to check the cabin first and he finds Sydney inside. She refuses to leave and wants to help. Rob has been gone 3 years and this is the first time the whole gang has seen her. They all feel protective of her but Maddox feels possessive. The sparks fly between these 2 along with the trees as the fire is getting closer. They need to beat it back. Sydney chips in and proves herself. She also falls in love with Maddox. He's beating himself up over his feelings and trying to keep her safe. Things heat up between these 2 then Maddox douses the flames. Sydney stands her ground. Instead of being safe like Maddox wants, she plans to transfer. What a great read!! I am reviewing this book given to me with no obligation to do so.

It took me a while to engage with this book, but, once I did, I really enjoyed it. Maddox is fighting his attraction to Sydney because she is his friend’s widow. She is moving on and working with Maddox and his crew reignites her love of firefighting and its adrenaline. Maddox is less sure – wanting her out of harm’s way. The sexual chemistry in this book is outstanding – it builds, it’s carnal, it’s definitely not for reading in public. But, with this, is a story worth reading and a scenario that is particularly pertinent given that most of Australia is on fire right now – there is destruction of habitat and danger to people, animals, and places. The characters are well-written, each with their own issues and the banter is one of the book’s best elements. It is worth reading for so many reasons.

As always, Ms. Petrova has written a story that will curl around you and make you feel all warm and fuzzy. Maddox and Sydney have a past. This is not a second chance story though. I love that Sydney has been able to overcome her pain and realize that she should be living and that it is time to do just that. I love how strong she is and that she shows it. I love Maddox even if he is a stubborn, hard headed pain in the tail end. The secondary characters add lifeblood to this story and they all stand out on their own. The writing is smooth and sweet. The characters are well built, realistic and lovable. Do not miss this one, it is well worth it and I look forward to other stories from this strong group of friends and family.

All Heat-Not Much Sweet.

This book is primarily about intense sexual attraction within the adventurous and dangerously demanding setting of fighting wildfires. The characters have a history only as friends, with the female main character being the widow of the main male character’s former teammate smokejumper. However, the intensity of their sexual tension borders on ridiculous. Every movement, action, and glance causes sexual readiness and fantasies. For example, they’re about to jump out of plane, and Sydney is thinking about sex with Maddox on the way down, and Maddox is in an apparent constant state of arousal. So, if you want a book full of heat, lust, and sexual encounters with a bit of insight into smokejumping, and fighting wildfires, this should entertain you. However, I just got sick of it and did a lot of skimming of the latter half of this book.

I liked the fact that Syd was strong enough and talented enough to not only be a firefighter, but a smoke jumper. She loved Rob, but was able to let go and move forward with her life. Syd and Maddox were combustible.

Maddox, on the other hand, drove me crazy. Really....Dude, get over it. If Syd could get past Rob being your friend and brother smoke jumper, why can't you?

I do have to say as sexy as Maddox sounded, and as steamy as the scenes were, I don't know that I could be rolling around amongst the wildfires having sex. Lol.

I would have also liked a little more of a story outside of the wildfire/smoke jumper/ base camp scene. It would have been interesting to see if they could function in a different environment.

Fighting The Flames is a fantastic contemporary romance by Em Petrova. Ms. Petrova has provided readers with a well-written book. I love the characters in this story. Sydney and her realtor go to her husband's cabin so she can get it on the market. Her husband died three years ago and it's time for her to let go of the cabin. When a fire breaks out, the realtor leaves her behind. Maddox and his crew arrive in time to beat the flames away from their late smokejumper teammate's cabin and find Sydney. I enjoyed reading Fighting The Flames and look forward to my next book by Em Petrova. Fighting The Flames is book 1 of the Where There's Smoke Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliffhanger.
