An extremely useful guide for anyone interested in producing an audio show, and anyone already doing it.

Celeste Headlee writes as clearly and directly as she instructs a producer to write their scripts. She moves quickly through a huge amount of information gleaned from years of experience. She also includes advice and expertise from other radio journalists.

I will say, I think the information here is more helpful for live radio than for podcasting. But what do I know? I’m only starting out. I think the content is more useful for radio because radio tends to be live and about reporting fact. Many podcasts today are simply not journalism. Regardless, anyone who interacts with guests on an audio show, or produces a show that hosts guests, will find useful information and advice herein.

As someone who knows audio production and editing, I think there’s quality advice here on that as well. She doesn’t get deep into the process, but urges you to do so while mentioning a few important details.

This guide contains essential advice on being or finding a host, writing promos and scripts, interviewing and pre-interviewing, getting your first radio job, and so much more.

If you’re interested in creating your own radio show, especially a journalistic one, read this book.

And then read her other book: We Need To Talk. That one is a masterpiece.
