Maine Secrets
This is an intriguing story. The trip to Maine is so descriptive. I can feel the shaking from the thunder, the pounding rain. The struggle to see through the grayness, the tension, the exhaustion, the curving road. Then as Ben is helplessly tossed like a leaf in a stream, no control, just falling in one situation after another, and why? The title says it all, secrets. Who is Alexa? Why would an abused woman be not only captivated but completely trusting a total stranger, a newly divorced academic with no conversational skills? Who is listed on her cellphone as Satan? What really happened to her to bring her to the ER? Who is the other Alexa? How could she know his name? Why accuse him? Then we have Sergeant Meddon. Why could she never catch up to a naked woman, running barefoot through the storm? She saw Ben into the hospital, so who was the running man in the woods? Enough confusion, suspense and foreshadowing to imply these are more than questions, they are secrets, dark, dark secrets.
