A novel of stark, unrelenting realism, forged out of the immediate experience of World War II at sea. No phony heroics, no stiff upper lips. It has become a classic in its time.
I enjoyed this book immensely when I first read it and the years haven't dulled it. A no-nonsense account of naval service in the early years of the Second World War. I read it during the first months of my army training (many years ago) and the first half of the book, which deals with JPW's training experience has always struck a chord.
