Miss Isabelle Maddox, known as Isla, has never been one to follow rules. She would much rather a reckless ride on horseback than a dance in a ballroom but her father has very different ideas about her future. To further the families’ fortune, he would see her married to a Scottish lord. Isla fears this will be the end of the life she treasures above all else.
Gavin Campbell will never marry again. His past has taught him well, his first wife’s spending has him teetering on the edge of financial ruin. Marriage is a disease , or so he thought until the headstrong Isla starts seeping into is heart and he begins to wonder if a woman like her might actually be a cure.
Taming a Laird’s Wild Lady is the third book in the Taming the Heart series, although each book in the series works perfectly fine as a standalone novel. Personally, I had only read book two prior to reading this one, but even without that I could have enjoyed this story. The only benefit to reading the prior book was that I’d been introduced to our leading lady, yet even that was just a simple introduction and didn’t give me all that much about what to expect from her story.
As with book two, this one was a very enjoyable read. It’s a quick read, one you can complete in a single sitting should you wish, with events hitting you one after the other. When books are this length, I find it is important for all events to have meaning. Fortunately, such is the case with this one. It is short and snappy, the action and the romance given ample attention, with something keeping you pulled into the story throughout. Truthfully, I believe this book does all of these things better than the prior book. Of the two, this one is certainly my favourite. You see, Taming a Duke’s Wild Rose was a rounded up four star rating, whereas this one was a solid four star rating.
What made this one better than the prior book? Well, it took all the aspects I enjoyed of the prior book and made them better.
I was addicted from the get-go: I couldn’t put the book down, finding myself with the constant need to red one more chapter. Honestly, every chapter left me questioning what would play out in the next scene, resulting in me reading until I’d consumed the entire story.
The main characters were a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed watching their relationship develop. I’m not the biggest lover of romances that develop at the speed shown within these stories, but I found I didn’t mind much with this couple. There is real chemistry between the two, and there is development of character throughout. I would have been happier if their story had taken longer to bloom, but I was so pulled in that I was able to overlook my usual dislike of whirlwind romances.
The side characters were also a lot of fun. There was real emotion behind all of the interactions to be seen, the entire cast pulling you into the world. Part of me wishes the story had been longer so that I could have enjoyed more of the side characters, as I really did want to see more of their interactions. There was such love between the family, great friendship to be seen, and I wanted more of it.
The only real downside for me was the action towards the end felt a bit too much like the prior book for me to be truly content with the way things played out. It was enjoyable, but I feel as though it was the same sort of action sequence as I read in the prior book. The scenes were different but the feeling felt the same, and I would have liked something different for our characters. Nevertheless, it was a fun read.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story and I’m curious to see what the next book brings.
As a final note, I would like to thank Aurora Publicity for allowing me to read this in exchange for a review: I had a lot of fun with this one, and will certainly be interested in reading more of the author’s work in the future.
Isla is nineteen years old and is most definitely a "wild child". Her father is hoping the offer of marriage to her will sweeten a deal he needs to make for the success of his companies. Gavin has been married once before to a socialite who has since passed away, but while alive she had nearly spent all of his money. He also has a seven year old son. Gavin needs this contract in order keep his Scottish lands and business ventures. However he is not the least bit interested in marriage. This fact alone may cause him to lose the deal. Throw in a kidnapping, an over protective brother and father, jealousy and of course passion and you have a quick easy and entertaining read. It follows alongs the same lines as the previous "Taming" books.
Isla is the wild child of the family behind two boys. She is nineteen and her father is bound and determined to see that she is part of the deal of land and shipping. Her father invites men to the house to discuss the possibilities of a deal. Isla is also very smart. She knows her wood and her horses. Her father will make use of that fact. Gavin needs this deal but is not keen on marriage after his deceased wife’s raking him through the coals with buying fancy dresses and socialite status. When Isla is kidnapped, what Gavin finds is that his heart is feeling again. Is Isla the person that can tame this laird? Is she willing to be a mother to his son?
Isla -Elizabeth Maddox- is as wild as the Scottish land she's been known to ride at brake neck speeds, she can out shoot any man, she's not a simpering London miss prone to fainting spells. No man is willing to be bested by a willful woman. To secure the family business her father has plans to sweeten the deal by offering Isla's hand in marriage. To Isla that means the end of her hoyden ways. Gavin Campbell is laird to the Campbell clan, he needs this business deal , his clan is facing financial ruin. Living in London away from his clan and his deceased wife's extravagant lifestyle has nearly ruined him, what he needs is the lumber deal not another wife, but why can't he keep away from the beautiful Isla and the thought of another man claiming her is enough for him to see red!
This was such an enjoyable story, everything about it was perfect. Gavin was such a broody character always suspicious of Isla, expecting her personality to become that of a London socialite, wanting balls and frivolous gowns. Isla had no problems speaking her mind all she wanted was to be herself riding her beloved horse ,who had time for primping and flirting. Without knowing Gavin falls under her spell and he can't picture life without her, and when her life is threatened will he step up and claim her as his own? Wonderfully written lots of action, a villain with a kidnapping plot and a hero saving his damsel in distress! Tammy Andresen really has the reader hooked in the story until the last page is done. Received an ARC from the author for my honest review, all opinions are voluntary and my own.
What an enchanting book! I sat down and read this in one evening. I was intent on finding out what would happen with Gavin and Isla. I know the name she goes by is seen as strange by characters in the book, but I happen to really like that name. And Isla is a unique character. She's strong and independent, stubborn to a fault on occasion, but she also has a good heart. And that makes me just love her character. Gavin had been burned before by his wife that died a while back. There is no comparison between her and Isla. But it does take a little time and some unfortunate events for Gavin to see that. In fact, it seems that in this book the tables are turned seeing as to how the man is the one often in trouble and needing help. This by no means squashes Gavin's masculinity. He is one very large Scottish man who can handle his own. Oh and I especially love how all the characters of the author's books are interwoven. Isla happened to appear briefly in another of the author's books I have read, and now she has her own story. Their stories all connect in some ways. I love that!
Taming A Laird's Wild Lady by Tammy Andresen is a fantastic historical romance. I love the characters Ms Andresen has created for this awesome story. This book is well-written with plenty of drama, humor and spice. The drama and action in Gavin and Isla's story kept the pages flying by. I enjoyed Taming A Laird's Wild Lady and look forward to reading more from Tammy Andresen in the future. Taming A Laird's Wild Lady is part of the Taming the Heart Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book that I received from a third party.
Isabelle Maddox is a rare gem of a lady. She isn't your typical English rose, but instead she is a spirited soul.. She rides horses, picks winning stallions and can easily defend herself. Now it is time for her to marry and settle down, but Isabelle (Isla) wants nothing to do with her would-be suitors... she knows that the majority of them are only after the lumber contract that her father has offered as part of her dowery. Isla feels as though she's out for auction. Gavin Campbell is a man in trouble. His people are starving and he will do anything to save them. He travels far because he has heard that a lumber contract is up for grabs, it's a god-send! That is until it is revealed to him that the contract is a conditional matter of marrying Isla. Gavin, having been married once before, wants nothing to do with this plan. But as he spends time with the beautiful heiress, will he change his mind?
Having read the first two books of the series, I was extremely excited to read Isla's story. This is by far my favorite of the series thus far! "A love for the ages!"
4.5 Stars Miss Isabelle Maddox, known as Isla, has never been one to follow rules. She would much rather a reckless ride on horseback than a dance in a ballroom but her father has very different ideas about her future. To further the families’ fortune, he would see her married to a Scottish lord. Isla fears this will be the end of the life she treasures above all else. Gavin Campbell will never marry again. His past has taught him well, his first wife’s spending has him teetering on the edge of financial ruin & her socialising kept him away from his estate. I loved Isla so different from the run of the mill heroine, she’s strong, independent & a real asset to her family in many ways. Gavin has been bitten by marriage once & is shy to try it again, however the more he comes to know Isla he realises there is so much more to her than a pretty face. Their journey to a HEA is very entertaining & I read the book in two sittings. This is the third book in the series but could be read by itself however I’m loving binge reading the series. I first read this book in an anthology.
HERO had a ton marriage before his wife died, leaving him with their 5 year old son. When he returns to Scotland with his brothers, he encounters our heroine whose father is trying to marry her off together with the lumber business. He is reluctant to marry again but spending time with Isla has opened his eyes and makes him fall in love. While gruff in the beginning, it didn't take long for him to turn sweet and protective.
HEROINE was fun and independent, she loves riding like a man, she doesn't need a man's protection and she certainly doesn't act like a society miss. She's frustrated when her old man wants to marry her off but when she meets our hero and begins to like him too.
OVERALL it was a simple romance and the conversations between the H/h depicted their budding relationship and then some.
Tammy Andresen takes a feisty, smart and independent young women named Isabelle/ Isla and puts her up for "auction" in her father's bid to get lumber for his family's shipping company. Gavin is a widowed Scot who needs to sell his lumber but isn't looking for a wife. What could go wrong? Ms Andresen's delightful tale builds the heat between these two slowly but surely. Throw in another suitor who refuses to take NO for an answer and there's no way you can put down this story. Getting to the Happily Ever After was a sweet treat with a little salty thrown in for flavor.
Meh. Super cheesy. The characters act too forward and modern. Same for their speech. The heroine Isla was your average silly girl who wanted love and naturally a man who wouldn't make her act like a well mannered woman but allow her to run free like a hellion or ya know have as much freedom a man has. I can handle a girl wanting more equality in historicals but this was her being stubborn and acting out IMO.
It wasn't great. This is the third book I've tried by this author and I think it will be the last. All silly and cheesy and barely historical.
Tammy Andersen has written another winner! I thoroughly enjoy those books of hers I have read--not always the case with period romances--and very much want to read more. The main characters in this book are great together, indeed the primary two made for each other, even though they do not at first recognize that truth. The setting is appealing and the story line entertaining. I highly recommend this book to lovers of reading books for pleasure. A treat awaits!!
Another Winner for sure. Tammy Andresen is amazing. I have read her Western/Cowboy's and Recency to the New York and Boston. Her characters are so great. Gavin and Isla are two of my favorites. I am a huge huge fan. And I can guarantee you will smile all the time. I highly recommend you read all Tammy Andresen books. And Taming A Lairds Wild Lady is a true winner !!!!!
Despite the malapropisms sprinkled throughout the content and some anachronisms (women before the mid-1800s did not wear pantaloons), it was delightful to read about a strong, resourceful heroine who can save herself and save the day. It was also great to read about a strongly masculine hero whose ego isn't shattered by a competent, intelligent, resourceful woman. Nicely done. Now find a competent editor to catch and correct those language errors and anachronisms..
I liked the plot but sadly author didn’t execute it fully. This is third book of this author and all of them started quite good and then got sugary and down down it went. Why Isla has to be so bloody perfect in so many things- she’s great with horses, cows, riding, shooting, children and uh oh with timber as well. Wayyy too much of it. And bad guys are totaly bad, good are sadled with all possible good qualities. It needs some spice here, some depth, I don’t know.
The story is set in 1856 on the Scots Boarders, in Northumberland England. Gavin Campell is a recent widower and reluctant to re-marry. When he encounters Miss Isabelle Maddox, Gavin begins to rethink marriage. Some of the plot is similar to Shakespeare's: Taming of the Shrew, however Anderson does not provide the witty banter that the play is well known for.
Every story written by Tammy Andersen seems better than the last. This book is no exception. I may have enjoyed it more than the others. I am firmly convinced she knows v how to write a good love story with enough intrigue and suspense to make it good. I would recommend this book to anyone.
She resented being tied to a lumber contract by being married to the man that signed the contact with her family. However, in the end it worked for her and also for the Laird that was set against marrying again.
This is a very nice, quick book to read. A girl raised and allowed limited freedoms during this time period is unusual and makes an entertaining story.
Elizabeth Maddox, Isla to her friends and family is being paraded in front of several set of suitors. The suitor would win a contract to supply lumber to her family's ship building business. Isla feel like she is being auctioned off. Isla is a free spirt, more at home riding her horse at a full gallop across the fields than strapped into a corset in the ballrooms of London. Gavin Campbell has come to try to win the contract but not for a wife. His first wife was more interested in spending money than being a wife and partner to him. Gavin thinks Isla will be just like her and fights his attraction to her. He quickly begins to see that she is not like other woman and starts to fight to win her over. I won't give away everything but Gavin and Isla must fight to be together and over come an obstacle that threatens Isla's safety. This is the third book in the Taming the Heart Series. I have loved every one and can't wait for the next one Taming a Rake into a Lord.
Different female character for this era which I enjoyed. Elizabeth is strong, wild, good at many things, knows the land, is a tomboy, and most of all, not dependent on a man. Gavin is the ideal match for her. The take turns protecting and saving each other. Another plus was how the Maddox siblings helped each other, loved each other, and looked out for one another. A quick, enjoyable read that had a bit of everything: romance, action, a villain, and chemistry. I was hooked until the last page. A great addition to the Taming of the Heart series. NOTE: I received a free copy of this book from the author, but was not required to write a review or influenced in terms of my review.
This was a pretty fast-paced, entertaining, light read. I had to suspend my disbelief on a few things (Isla's family is *really* unobservant...just saying), but for the most part I enjoyed it. Isla is not your typical prissy society girl; she enjoys horses and being outside in general, and doesn't take any crap from anyone. She's my kind of girl to read about!
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Just fabulous! Isla & Gavin started at each other's throats, and somehow wound up in each other's arms! Great pacing in the novel, just the right amount of conflict from outside sources, and some pretty delightful spicy moments peppered throughout! Loving this series!
Has all the elements for a great book - witty, funny, sexy and fast moving. The Lady (Isla) is one of the best characters in a book that I have read in a long time. She has the zest for life. This is a book that you do not want to put down.
Book three in the Taming the Heart Series. After reading the first two I could not wait for this story. Isla Maddox is a free spirit or tries to be in everything she does. She is more of a tomboy than a debutante but her father is insisting she marry to help bring much needed money to the coffers. The focus is on Scottish Lord, Gavin Campbell who really does not want to marry again after his first wife's financial ruination to his clan. But what can you do when you meet a a woman who endangers those walls that have been built up and has such a wonderful spirit for life? This is truly a wonderful story that will fully engage your emotions and you will fall in love with Isla and Gavin. Action, adventure and true love transport the reader to quickly turn the pages until the story ends. You will not be disappointed!
