I'm not usually a fan of the remake of fairy tales or time travel but this collection changed my mind. A beautiful collection of some of my favorite writers and a couple of new. I especially enjoyed "Enticed by Lady Eliana" by Amanda Mariel who is always a favorite to read. "The Ugly Duckling Debutante" was a sweet, emotional story by Meara Platt. She brought me to tears in a couple of places and is a beautiful story of healing. "His Elusive Nightingale" by a new author to me, Arizona Thatcher was a fun read. "A Diamond for a Duke" and "The Fairy Palace by two more of my preferred authors, Collette Cameron and Sue London and new to me author Tammy Archer with Hunting A Lady's Heart rounded the ensemble of fairy tales come true. Each story brings something new and different to the magical world of dreams come true.
I cannot understand why these authors were billed as bestselling authors. While it may be true, this is one of the poorest collections I have purchased. The stories were uniformly unsatisfying in the number of loose ends and incompleteness of the plot. Truly a waste of good reading time, even though I hate giving up on anything I've started. I'm always an optimist thinking this will get better. Sadly, This whole collection just got worse.
To date I have two remaining stories to read and review.
Stolen by My Knave by Dawn Brower Lady Elizabeth Kendall has heard stories of pirates and life in the future. Now her pirate has stepped through the looking glass can she find true love? There are only a few time travel tales that hold my attention and this sweet story by Dawn Brower is one of them.
Enticed by Lady Elianna by Amanda Mariel The death of her father places Lady Elianna under her cousin’s care who in turn treats Elianna no better than a servant if not worse. Forced to accept her fate Elianna is soon intrigued by Lord Sinclair who is supposed to be in the running for her cousin’s daughter. A gentleman who just may be her knight in shining armor. A sweet tale by Amanda Mariel that had me feeling for Elianna, cheering Lord Sinclair, and wanting to strangle the cousins (more than once).
The Ugly Duckling by Meara Platt Devastated by the loss of her family in a foreign country; forced to return to England to live with relatives who do not want her and knowing she doesn’t fit the English perception of beauty has Gennalyn feeling like the ugly duckling. A chance (and unconventional) meeting with Roarke, the returning war hero may just turn the ugly duckling into a swan. Meara Platt starts her tale with humor and a bull and develops it into a sweet tale of confidence.
A Diamond for a Duke by Collette Cameron An evil mother, wicked sister, two delightful fairy godmothers, a handsome duke, with a few toads tossed in and you have a wickedly delightful tale by Collette Cameron. A tale that showcases Ms. Cameron’s wit with such phrases as “saucy astute old bird”; “thundering hippopotamus’’s hooves”; and “blisters and bollocks”.
His Elusive Nightingale by Ari Thatcher Searching for a missing opera singer should be simple enough but when you risk losing your heart to the one person who may know her whereabouts just may complicate things. Lovely tale by Ari Thatcher of two people finding love in ways they never expected.
*I was provided a copy from the authors for my honest reviews.
Stolen by My Knave by Dawn Brower
I normally don't like books that involve time travel, but the prologue in this one hooked me and I liked it a lot. I really liked the whole story and the bits of back story to make everything more understandable. This has a fairytale romance feel which I'm always up for. I loved the way they interacted with each other and the little twists. I wished it was longer because I kept wanting to read more.
Elizabeth is definitely my kind of heroine. She is bold and speaks her mind no matter what. I loved her when she was trying not to roll her eyes and that she didn't back down from what she wanted.
Jack is also bold and speaks his mind. I loved him when he told his tale and realized connections between them. He knew what he wanted and was quick to make it happen without anyone knowing what he was doing.
Enticed by Lady Elianna by Amanda Mariel
This one has a Cinderella feel and I love it! I was shocked from the beginning when her cousin arrived because of how he talked to her and then tricked her. One of my favorite parts was their meeting because I did not see it coming. I wanted to jump up and down at the ending.
Elianna's life was torn apart when her father died and her cousin moved in, but she never gave up on one day getting her life back. I love the bit of rebellion in her when she made up her mind to do something. She was always was nice even when she was treated horribly.
Garrett see's people for what they are and he doesn't really hide his feelings. I loved that from the start he was determined to find the truth and set out to do it. He definitely was not one to be messed with and would make sure you paid for it. I wanted to know more about his past.
Rose is a woman that would want on my side because she was not afraid to fight.
The Ugly Duckling Debutante by Meara Platt
This one matches it's title perfectly. I loved how this one played out and that it also included ducklings to add to the story. Their first meeting was different and perfect because they probably wouldn't have met any other way. There is a bit of a twist in the end and I wasn't expecting what was happening in his family.
Gennalyn broke my heart. Her life had been turned upside down, her relatives treated her horribly, and everyone called her names and paid no attention to her. She needed a friend to help her before she wasted away. I loved that she talked to animals and was so excited to see her blossom.
Roarke seems perfect but he has his own problems. I loved how he was with his brothers and what he did with his father to help his brother. He saw the real Gennalyn when no one else did and would not give up on her no matter what.
The youngest girl is one I saw hope for in the end.
A Diamond for a Duke by Collette Cameron
Another great fairytale feeling book! I love when wallflowers find love with someone that no one thinks they would. It was clear from the moment they saw each other that they were going to be together. I loved Aunt Teo and Lady Lockhart because they were definitely not women to be messed with.
Jemmah has let her mother and sister walk all over, but she finally had enough. I loved her from the start and when she stood up to her mother. She never held anything against anyone and didn't look down on herself.
Jules has decided to put off marriage until he felt like he had after his past. You have to love him because he makes it quite clear what he wants and that he will do whatever it takes to marry who he loves.
There are many characters that made me want to know more about them.
His Elusive Nightingale by Ari Thatcher
This one is different and I love it. I absolutely love the title and the whole mystery of where did the singer go and why did she leave. I loved that it started out has a challenge for him and a way to make money for her but quickly turned into more. I was not expecting the bit of a twist with the duke and the singer because I couldn't decide on why he wanted to there so badly.
Kitty is a maid that has her own secrets and reasons to protect her boss. I really liked her from the start and how she got along with people. I loved how she wasn't really shy and made sure she didn't forget about her family.
Malcolm Doesn't care about the money he just likes the challenge of finding the singer. I loved how he tended to be very straight forward when talking and didn't think about how people would react.
The Fairy Palace by Sue London
I was glued to this one. This one is really like a fairytale from the start when he takes her to London the way he does because of the thrill of it. It's a bit like a whirlwind with the twist that they have known each other for years. I loved how they just got each other and knew what the other needed. His father was a bit surprise and I wasn't certain what he would do until the end.
Melanie is such a sweet girl even though she is a tiny bit bold. I liked her a lot especially when she was at the ball having fun because she was like a little girl. She is one you will love right away.
Oscar is a bit wild, but also a poet and followed his heart at the drop of a hat. I liked him from the start because I didn't know for sure what he would do at any time. He is one that is different and a nice change from many.
Hunting for A Lady’s Heart by Tammy Andresen
This one is full of magic and a battle. Their meeting was definitely a shocking one and meant to happen for a good reason. I loved the whole family being involved and that they didn't bat an eye at anything. I wasn't sure how it would end and loved the ending.
Eirwen is a very sweet and would never hurt someone even though she's been hurt multiple times. I loved her and that she was battling not just her stepmother, but her fears. She is powerful in many ways.
Will is someone that will do anything to protect those he loves. He is very understanding of things and listens to everything and everyone around him. I loved him from the start and how he was with his family.
Enticed by Lady Elianna I received this book from the author for an honest review. *Clapping* Who doesn’t love Cinderella? Well? I am waiting!! Exactly we all love her story. Ya know why we love it? Because the bad people get what they deserve and the good person gets it all in the ed. Yup that is my take anyway. Well this story is a retelling of Cinderella in regency time. Lady Elianna is a 17 year old who has now lost both her parents. Her cousin comes and informs her to be a servant or go to nunnery? WELL Servant it is. 5 years of deaing wit thiese cousins of hers was 5 years too long in my book. The new Lady Berkely makes Eli taker her brat to London for fittings. Caroline is going to have her first and only season if her parents have anything to say about it. When they bump into Lord Sinclair he is charmed my Eli and disgusted by Caroline. As the story goes, Lord Sinclair comes to ball to see Eli even though it is under the pretense to see Caroline. The ball and all the traditional scenes are played out in and we are cheering on Lord Sinclair for saving our damsel in distress. What I did love was the spin of the story at the end. When we find out all about Lady Elianna’s cousin’s and what they have been hiding all along from Eli.
Stolen by My Knave by Dawn Brower I receive this book from the author for an honest review. **Claapping** AHHHHHH Captain Jack’s book! *Bootie Shaking and fist pumping* I have been so wondering about him after Evelyn’s book and now we know what happens to him. Jack wakes up after a fall through time to save the king annnd his mistress soooo the king gives the stranger a title but no lands. Jack is in England time trying to figure out what to do and maybe how to get back this time and life. He knows that getting an invite to the 2 week ball is probably going to drive him nuts. Having a title means young married minded woman will be looking for a husband. That is not in Jack’s cards. Elizabeth knows alllll about time travel given that her grandmother and mother both did it. Her grandmother escaped Captain Jack and her mother fell through time to marry her father. She ha sseen visions of Jack but always thought they were her imagination running wild and never really thought that she was seeing the real man. When they meet unexpectedly at the library, the chemistry was awesome. They both are intrigued and want to know more. When Jack tells Elizabeth his name and then tells her who she is…..Que plot twist….the two can’t be together!! GASP!! When Jack talks to Alys all about her life, time travel and he learns all is not what he thought so he runs to find and claim his Ellie!! This book was one of my favorites in the series!!

So far, I have read only Collette Cameron’s A DIAMOND FOR A DUKE, but I cannot wait to read the other stories.
Jules, Duke of Dandridge, had to drag himself to attend his godmother’s birthday ball, and he tried to make a hasty exit, because of all the marriage-minded mamas that follow his every step, such as Mrs. Dament and the gorgeous Adelina. But it’s Adelina’s sister, Jemmah and Jules’ childhood friend, whom he hopes to see. It’s been too long, two years, and luck has it at that birthday ball, when Jules happens to enter a room and finds Jemmah who had been napping. Jules rarely goes out, and Jemmah even less so. She has been forever in the shadow of her beautiful older sister Adelina; Jemmah is the forgotten daughter, the one always neglected in favour of the golden child, Adelina who as gloriously beautiful as she is, has an ugly soul and a mean mouth: Adelina is her mother’s daughter.
Jemmah wears hand-me-downs from the beautiful one, and her life recalls Cinderella’s in small ways. Jemmah has always had a crush on Jules, but as her mother and Adelina had their eyes on the duchy, Jemmah stayed in the background, as always. What she didn’t know is that Jules had always liked her a lot, and now he sees the beautiful and caring woman she has become, and even though he hadn’t thought of marrying for a good while yet, reconnecting with Jemmah just changed Jules’ mind.
Jules of the sombre mien and serious demeanour comes alive once again when he gets to see his friend Jemmah; he knows what it is to be to be neglected, to be left in the shadow of another sibling. Jules also knows what it is to have his love taken away, and he had the misfortune that the woman he thought he would marry turned out to be otherwise than she appeared; she was not unlike the horrid Adelina. He knows Jemmah, and she is even lovelier inside than she is outside.
Jemmah is little more than a servant to her mother and older sister, and the reason behind Jemmah’s mother acting the way she does, is understandable and logical in her own mind, albeit still unforgivable; Jemma’s mother is not nasty or storyline purposes, in her twisted way, she’s acting as she should.
I love the fairytale on which A DIAMOND FOR A DUKE is based, a French classic by Jean Perreault, because it is about looking beyond appearances, that all that glitters is definitely not gold, and what a joy to have Collette Cameron give it an lovely Regency twist. The writing is brilliant, so colourful and eloquent, and I love how Ms. Cameron again comes up with original and often quite hilarious epithets and exclamations. The characters feel genuine, and I absolutely adored Jemmah’s Aunt Theo! I could picture her in every little detail, so formidable and decisive, and fair. The romance between Jules and Jemmah is simply a lovely person; they truly like each other, nothing is rushed; it’s just a progression of how they felt towards each other since they were children, and since neither got out much, they just didn’t see each other all that much for a long time. Jemmah thought she was undeserving of someone like Jules, a duke no less, she of the tattered clothes and what she thought were her plain features. She is charming, and Jules is a wonderful man: honourable, kind, and so protective of his friend and of his true love, Jemmah.
A DIAMOND FOR A DUKE might be short in length, but it is long on charm, the writing is exquisite as ever, which is not surprising from Collette Cameron. A DIAMOND FOR A DUKE is a wonderful read that will take you away for a bit and have you dreaming of finding your own Jules and a romance as true as Jules’ and Jemmah’s. I wonder if we will get to see Sutcliffe’s and Pennington’s stories…
"If I'm to have any future at all I must have a husband."
If anything, this is the banner for most Regency Romances. However, in this box set, it might be said that that banner is a tongue in cheek nose thumbing instead. This is a second round of wonderfully re-imagined fairy tales by a group of well known Regency writers.
And they aren't just up dated stories. Each author loves to write. Being an author means often using your own life moments as grist for the mill. My favorite from the set of seven stories was "The Ugly Duckling Debutante"by Meara Platte, a reworking of a well known story."A Diamond for a Duke" reworks a Perrault tale called "The Fairies". Dawn Brower's "Stolen by My Knave" is a novella with characters she's developed in other work she has done with Pirate Jack and Elizabeth. Amanda Mariel sets her tale of Lady Elianna and Garrett Sinclair: "Enticed by Lady Elianna" in a type of Cinderella meets Rapunzel tale. Ari Thatcher's "His Elusive Nightingale" focuses on music and the search for one person which leads Malcolm Lennox to Kitty Fairbanks and a type of "cat and mouse" tale that leaves a smile on your face. Sue London's"Fairy Palace" sets the reprobate Oscar Williams changing because of unexpectedly falling for Melanie Garrett and proving to his family that he is more than what meets the eye.The final story by Tammy Andresen, "Hunting for a Lady's Heart" is a true adaptation of Snow White, and a lovely way to end this set.
I loved reading these. Fairy tales and fables have been a secret passion of mine for many years, so I was honored to be approached to indulge and then write about them. I chose to savor each one separately. A definite re-read in the future, I highly recommend this set.
I definitely give all these authors a 5 star rating. With each selection I would think " oh, this is my favorite ... until I read the next". I have always loved fairy tales and I love fractured tales with a twist even more. I recommend this for hours of pleasurable reading, being able to take a break between stories if needed or sit through a marathon of great Regency romance.
When I say down to read this box set I hadn't realized each book would have fairy tale threads so I was having a field day with finding each children's classic tale given a grown up regency romance twist. They are all fun reads but I think my favorite may be The Ugly Duckling Debutante. It shattered my heart and then put it back together. I laughed and cried. I especially loved that she talked to cattle, bulls and ducklings more than people. It's also rare for Regency books to have characters that lived in India though it being common practice during that period. So that was refreshing. That said I loved all the books, I loved the fairy tales they replayed and I look forward to reading more by all these talented authors.
Don't give on on this bundle, they're are more winner's than clunker's. Some of the stories have editing issues, but not enough to confuse the reader.
1. STOLEN BY A KNAVE by Dawn Brower - 5 STARS
I've enjoyed many stories by Dawn, and really am not a fan of time travel stories, but this may change my mind. The time travel worked well, and really was a small part of the story. The H had years to digest what happened to him by the time he meets the h. But, the h met him when she was 12 through a mirror.
The h has spirit, is smart and understands about time travel through a relative. So when she meets the H she is already in love.
I can't wait to research to see if her brother's have their own stories. There isn't lovemaking, but their is one act of foreplay prior to marriage. Heat level 3.5 out of 5 if that and quickly described.
We have an interesting story that unfolds at just the right pace. No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, small tad of spice and romance.
I can't improve on the blurb, just recommending this story.
2. ENTICED BY LADY ELIANNA by Amanda Mariel - 5 STARS
I must admit I am not a fan of the retelling of fairy tails, because it's like old hash, but this was so unique and entertaining. I do enjoy this author and her writing style and own many books by her.
This is a clean story but I didn't miss my tad of spice in this. I felt a connection to the H/h and my heart went out to the h and how her family treated her (true Cinderella fashion). The romance seemed at a good pace and the character's had depth. Loved the secondary character's too.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA as only in a Fairy Tail can be, romance and a sweet epilogue 10 months in the future. I can't improve on the blurb, just recommending this story and any by this author.
3. THE UGLY DUCKLING DEBUTANTE by Meara Platt - 4.5 STARS
What a tale - this was a story that will stay with you.
I did want more info on what was in the diary that the h thought the H might change his mind? What happened to the H's father, did he finally listen to the words of his son? What happened to the youngest son and Charlotte?
Even with those questions, this is tug at your heart story for the h. Everyone calls her names because she has no friends, she spends her time at the pond with the ducks - hence the title.
Clean story, with kisses. I felt such a connection to this couple. The H is honorable and cares. He see a wounded soul who no-one tries to get to know. How the story unravels was so endearing. No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romantic and clean.
4. A DIAMOND FOR A DUKE by Collette Cameron - 3.25 STARS
In the beginning I felt I came in the middle of the story. The h/H shared similar abuse backgrounds as children and became friends. I think if the story had us meeting them when they were younger, I would have believed their instant love.
I'm not big on fairy tale stories and this has shades of Cinderella. I did enjoy it more as the story hit about the 1/2 mark. Loved the elderly character's who gave the h's mother and sister words to put them in their place. The ending was satisfying as was the epilogue.
Clean story with some kisses. No cheating, no cliffhanger and HEA,
5. HIS ELUSIVE NIGHTINGALE by Ari Thatcher - 4 STARS
I know I've read this in another bundle, but can't discover which one. I didn't realize Ari Thatcher is Aileen Fish - who knew?
Enjoy this author's writing style and own many books by A.F. There is cheating - off page, but not by our H/h. The H is trying to find someone for a Duke, and would be paid handsomely. Our h knows who the lady he is looking for - so off they go on the hunt.
The couple slowly fall in love but don't confess to each other. There is lovemaking, outside of marriage, heat level 3 out of 5 and only described once. Simple story with just a few forks in the road.
6. THE FAIRY PALACE by Sue London - 2.5 STARS
Liked the h but didn't find many redeeming qualities in the H. This is a clean story with a kiss. Not much happens in this story. I did enjoy the spirit of the h and her delight in seeing London for the first time. The H is a younger son and likes to cause problems to get his father upset - very immature. The h I found delightful.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, some romance and an epilogue with not much to it. (ljb)
7. HUNTING FOR A LADY'S HEART by Tammy Andresen - 5 STARS
What a joy to read this story - twist on Snow White. Most of the time it's Cinderella but this was a fresh take on S.W.
Wonderful twists with suspense thrown in at the right time. I kept waiting for the 7 Dwarfs to show up and then it dawned on me, they had a mention as the orphans - clever!
Interesting main and secondary character's. I felt a connection to the H/h and there is mild lovemaking within marriage heat level 3 out of 5.
The epilogue was a nice touch and I will have to research to see if this author has other stories in the fairy tale genre. I am not a fan usually of this type of story, but this one has changed my mind. What made this unique it had an element of the fairy tale we are so familiar with, but this author took it also down a different path - great job!
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romantic and little steam. (ljb)
Stolen By My Knave. By Dawn Brower. ☆☆☆☆ This is the first book in the box set, but it's also in a series. You don't need to have read the series to enjoy this. Lady Elizabeth Kendall comes from a family that has had someone come through time and found love. The story has been passed down through the family and Elizabeth has a special fascination with one of the characters in it. Jackerson Morgan Carwyn the Duke of Whitewood was on the deck of his ship one moment and the next he is rescuing someone from bandits. This is a fun, historical romance that has definitely tempted me to go and find the rest of the series. I loved all the characters and can't wait to read their stories. ******************* Enticed By Lady Elianna. By Amanda Mariel. ☆☆☆☆ After the death of her father, Lady Elianna is left to the less than tender mercies of a distant cousin and his family. They take over completely. Garrett Tumbly, Viscount Sinclair likes to solve puzzles. The young companion of Lady Caroline has got a secret and is in distress, even if she doesn't admit it. A lovely Cinderella type story, with a very determined hero. ********************* The Ugly Duckling Debutante. By Meara Platt. ☆☆☆ Lord Roarke Hawthorn has come home from the war a hero. As a second son he has had to make his own way. His brother has been too busy trying to save the ancestral home from ruin to look after Riarke's lands. Miss Gennaglyn Saroyah Beauclerk lost her family in India , and even months later she still feels dead inside. Living with distant relatives that don't want another young female around doesn't help. Our hero sees past the shell our heroine gas become to the treasure inside. An emotional story. ************************* A Diamond For A Duke. By Collette Cameron. ☆☆☆ Miss Jemmah Dament has been down trodden for most of her life by her mother and older sister. She has still managed to keep her own sweet personality. Her mother and sister bad mouth everyone who disagrees with them. Jules, Duke of Dandrige had a similar experience in childhood, but now he has the title it gives him power. It doesn't, however stop his family from trying to force a bride on him. A sweet romance where personality wins over beauty. This enforces the old saying "if you can't say something nice, say nothing at all". *************** His Elusive Nightingale. By Ari Thatcher. ☆☆☆☆☆ Ooh this one is much better. Malcolm Lennox is a Justice of the Peace. He catches criminals. At the moment he is bored because they haven't had an interesting case in months. He hears about a bounty offered by a Lord who wants yo find an opera Singer. Kitty Fairfax worked for an opera singers who has now decided not to perform any more. That leaves her struggling for a living. When someone offers to pay her to find the singer ,her mother insists she take it. This is a lovely adventure with lots if twists and turns. I loved it. ***************** The Fairy Palace. By Sue London. ☆☆☆☆ Miss Melanie Garrett is thinking hard about marriage. She knows it must come but the only prospective man around is not to her liking. Lord Oscar Williams is the youngest so of a Duke, and has always done his best to annoy his Father. Drinking too much and generally wasting his life. Now he is bored again and can only think of one person who might cheer him up. A sweet romance with lovely characters. I think I may have met some of them in another book. It may be part of a series, but is easily read as a stand alone. I really enjoyed it. The title of this story confuses me because it doesn't seem to relate to the story at all. **************** Hunting For A Lady's Heart. By Tammy Andresen. ☆ This is a retelling if Snow White with a few touches of other fairy tales thrown in. No really my thing.
A Diamond for a Duke-3 stars-Jules and Jemmah knew each other for years, but over time, lost touch. Her mother and sister try to leave her out in any event in society, and she owns nothing to be able to attend anyway. Jules went the way of a rogue, but is now being forced to marry so he can have an heir. They meet by chance again, and let no one get in the way of their courting. Too short, but a nice story of friendship catching alight and love that's right.
The Fairy Palace-3 stars-I liked Oscar, whose poetry is a passion he's shared only with Melanie. Melanie is a put upon girl, with a strict aunt and a wild side that begs for the London scene. So, Oscar rescues her from marriage to a dull man she dislikes, and as the go together into society, everyone assumes they'll marry. As they realize they truly do love each other, the biggest obstacle is getting his father's permission to marry, as he sees Oscar as too frivolous, and he controls Oscar's allowance. Their relationship changes too fast from friendship to love/marriage, but otherwise, it's a good story.
Hunting for a Lady's Heart-2 stars-Eirwen has magic and can't be killed by her stepmother, Lady White, but she won't stand up to her either. Will isn't afraid and falls in love at first sight. Some of the magic is nice, but there's too much that doesn't make sense and isn't suited to the length of this story. Not very good.
Enjoyed these small books but how much bigger they could have been. It was all there to start with and so much more could have been done with the stories. Nice way to pass some spare time.
This is a review for Collette Cameron's contribution to this set, "A Diamond for a Duke." It's a retelling of the classic story "Toads and Diamonds". As in the original version there are two sisters, Adelina and Jemmah, one whom the mother shows her favor toward though she's spoiled and heartless. The other, our heroine, is the embodiment of kindness even though she's had a rough life. Jemmah is banished from her home after she's offered a position with a wealthy benefactress and does not throw it to her elder sister. Then we have Jules, the Duke of Dandridge... Jemmah's Knight in shining armor. The man who will change her life forever. Collette Cameron has done a marvelous job retelling Charles Perrault's classic tale! Bravo!
I loved every single one. They all tie into previous stories each author has written which made me giddy! So excited to finally have learned "what happens next?"
