Avis Blackthorn is entering his third year at Hailing Hall, the fourth best magical school for Wizards in the Seven Magical Kingdoms. Will Avis even make it to school this year? Not if his evil family have anything to do with it... intent on making him evil like them, they lock him in the dungeons! But Avis has more to deal with this year than his horrible family... the evil Belafonte twins have moved to Hailing Hall, and Avis is certain they are there on a mission, a mission to find something ancient and magical to help the evilest Sorcerer alive - Malakai and his evil Darksiders. That's where it all starts to come undone for poor Avis - and where the real mystery starts to unfold... With his trusty friends Robin and Tina they set out to find this elusive 'map' before the twins can get their hands on it. But the mystery goes way further than any of them could ever imagine. With a new favourite teacher Magisteer Hummingbird, a first year with special (and very handy) mind reading powers, and the uncovering of a mystery so dark it will be a miracle if any of them survive until the end of the year...

I know some think that it is reminiscent of Harry Potter, but to quote Agatha Christie/Hercule Poirot, there is nothing new under the sun...and I enjoy reading Simmonds, so for me, as always, it is 5 stars.
The more I read these books the more I want to read. New characters are introduced some good, some not. By the end of the book we know who five of the seven, seventh sons are, there is an unexpected twist or two, Avis and his friends learn about spirit animals and which spirit animals are their's. The best three words in the book were the last three - To be continued . I spent most of the last half of the book hoping for a sequel, now it is just a waiting game.
I really enjoy this series. I stayed up all night reading this book. I know this this is not the end of this series.(at least it better not be.) Alright in this book picks up where the last one left off.
I have to admit I feel sorry for avis. The reason I gave it four stars was because it seemed to lag in places. That might have been me though. I will be reading the beginning of this series.
My nephew and I really enjoy this series. It is a book for all ages.
I received a copy of this ebook from the author in exchange for sharing my honest opinion about the book.
I'll admit when I first started reading this book and made it about 1/3 of the way through it, I was ready to give up on it. There were just too many elements that tied this series in with the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling (primarily the second and third books in that set). I put it down and gave it a few days rest while I read other books, and then came back to it. From that point on, the story was all original...I was so relieved there were no other situations to tie this book in with the Potter series from there on out. If you happen to notice this while you read...it's most likely just coincidence...KEEP READING!
I really enjoyed the original adventures included in this book, and I look forward to reading more about Avis and his band of friends at Hailing Hall.
Follow Avis for another round of adventures. Not only a great story but also has a lesson on morals in it. Great for children learning about friends and popularity. Terrific reading for all . Had to buy this to see what follows after getting book one off Instafreebie
This book was good though I am curious, will Avis turn back into a human in the next book? I hope so. His stories are really good and I want to read more of him. Hope to read the next book.
