I was really excited when I read the first book in this series, I was still excited when the second book came out, this one did not sit as well with me as the others did. The characters are still good for the most part but have lost a little of their shine and are not making me feel as much for them. The situation has calmed down and now that the major infection has passed they have settled into just being sedate. The story has taken a big turn from what I thought I was going to be getting since it is no longer centered around those who were infected in the earlier books.
The players have changed only slightly. There is a fanatical priest who claims a divine mission. A father who is caught between protecting the President and his family. A President who seems to have an agenda that he is not sharing with his protection detail. It's been two months since the outbreak and the Green Zone inside San Francisco is the only known functioning government. They are surrounded by deltas and struggling to maintain basic security, the future of civilization hangs in the balance.
Mason West is a former Marine who has fought to keep both his family and the President alive in a world that has been turned upside down. The West family has ensured the challenges that come with trying to rebuild after the outbreak. Nothing is easy or certain and they all make sacrifices to live each day. But if they go too far it could destroy everything.
The story is good, with a bit of intrigue, multiple players, and plot points layered on plot points. The problem is that things seem to get a little convoluted and you just want it to get to the point and be over already. The delta's, the boogeyman in this world have become more of a side note here. The spotlight is now on the political intrigue and machinations behind the scenes. I do have to mention one scene that seems to have been taken straight from a Lethal Weapon movie, you'll know it when you see it. I definitely recommend it.

Some are zombies, some are deltas. Zombies with a twist.
I've read book 2 and 3 in the last week or so. Book 2 was so good I had to read three to see what happened next. I hope there is a book 4 to follow. Book 3 was all tied up but the story could easily go on.

The amount of twists and turns in this book leave you constantly wondering what will happen next. It's a nice follow up to the first two in the series and the ending makes me really want to see where the storyline will go next. Mason and his family are put into some terrible situations. As always though Mason finds a way to make the impossible possible. This is a very unique storyline that I can't stop reading once I get started. Highly recommended!

Just finished the last book and sad but looking forward to the fourth book. Mason is a family man first and an incredibly powerful soldier second. His wife is no slouch in taking care of her family which includes a rare baby chimp and a super model. All gathered together in a hair raising apocalypse. Recommend this series. Hope to hear more about Clyde in the next story.
Now on to the search for more books by this gifted writer.

The Darwin Sacrifice
This third book in the series is really worth reading, and I wish the fourth book was out. William Oday is an excellent writer. ☺

Book 3
I actually like this book better than one and two. I think because he doesn't have flashbacks from when he was in war. Good storyline. Easy read. Entertaining.

WOW! No disappointment here. Third book is just as fast moving and thrilling as the first two. I would recommend this book to everyone, but be warned you will not be able to put it down. Just as addictive as the first two, fantastic series.

Once again William Oday stretches the reader’s nerves just short of the breaking point. The action moves to San Francisco, where a “safe” area – The Green Zone – offers protection to those who are willing to trade the promise of luxuries (cell phone service restored; garbage collection) for their freedom. Mason West finds his (extended) family in dire peril as the self-proclaimed President of the United States becomes judge, jury, and executioner for anyone who might represent resistance to his plans for total control, and an insane monk conducts a rein of terror leading up to a plan for mass murder. And as a backdrop to all of this, the plague-damaged but surviving Deltas (think zombies who can communicate with each other, are not rotting apart, but retain the strength and speed of an irresistible force of predators) are finding that breaking through a chain link fence isn’t that hard to do, after all.

The Darwin Sacrifice takes off with Mason West as the head of security for President Cruz, in San Francisco. This third installment not only stays true to the theme of the post apocalyptic world from the previous books, but now focuses on the rebuilding of America and the political intrigue involved in that endeavor.
Once again William Oday builds a story with multiple story lines involving his well developed characters as well as introducing some new characters who take the reader on a nonstop action journey.
While this is the third book in the Darwin series, it could stand alone to introduce a new reader to this series, and for those who have lived the adventures from The Darwin Protocol this Is a must read.
The next book in this series can't come soon enough for this reader.

I found that I did not like this book as much as I did the preceding volumes. The story of survival in the face of a pandemic that leaves millions as de-evolved savages (a bread and butter post-apocalyptic scenario) has been replaced by a story where the zombiesque savages are just part of the background and in some circumstances, creatures to be pitied. The story is now about a power hungry and evil leader, with Mason being very, very slow on catching on to what is happening. Thrown in is a group of disgusting and depraved religious crazies. I'm not sure I will continue with this series.
