The Immortal Mark

Rate this book
The only thing Cara got for her eighteenth birthday was an unexpected invitation to move out of her uncle’s house. College isn’t an option for a poor girl with average grades, so when her best friend Riley finds them a mysterious job opportunity that includes room and board, Cara is interested but thinks it sounds too good to be true.
The night before their interview, Cara has an epic night out with Theo, an impossibly handsome guy she just met. He’s charismatic, a little mysterious, and it feels like she’s known him her whole life.

When she runs into him at her interview, he’s cold and elusive. He makes it very clear that he doesn’t want her working with him, which only makes their mutual attraction burn hotter. Cara takes the job for Riley’s sake and promises herself she’ll avoid this jerk and his mood swings, no matter how hard it is to keep away from him.

Soon she finds out her millionaire employers aren’t normal guys who live and travel in luxury. They’re immortals. Theo wasn’t trying to ruin her job prospects. He was trying to save her life, because the girls they hire never make it out alive.

**I received an eARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review**

I’m new to Amy Sparling’s books, but the amount of work she has to offer is insane. She wrote this book in a seriously short period of time, but it was done well. I got to know Cara, understood why she jumped at the opportunity to leave her Texan town, and I was left wanting more when I turned the last page.

Sparling drew out the beginning of the book a tad, but it made sense why later. It had a contemporary feel, but I knew something paranormal was afoot. The paranormal danced with the normal. Cara’s struggles, her sudden homelessness, and a tight bond with her best friend she met through foster care intermingled with the mysterious Rosewood Clan—ehmm, Industries—and gave it a more realistic feel. Strange, considering there was nothing realistic about the predicament that Cara finds herself in.

Firstly, I liked her character. There were moments when she got on my nerves, but overall she was strong and resilient. Unlike her best friend, Riley, she had a firm grasp on reality. I didn’t understand how she would be so okay with going along with everything that the men in the clan were saying, considering her predisposed wariness when it came to anyone she hadn’t know for her entire life. Still, because of the circumstances thrown at her at such a delicate time in life, her moxie and determination couldn’t be trifled with.

Be warned: insta-love ensues. Since The Immortal Mark screams unlikely circumstances, I’ll let it slide. (I also adored Theo.) Well, I adored him when he wasn’t being a jerk and sticking his foot in his mouth. As long as he kept on smirking and smiling like the world owed him a service, I loved him. Also, his devotion to Cara sung highly of his character. I’m interested to see where their relationship goes and if it will be able to stand the test of the time that they have with one another.

There was a lot of build-up to the climax of the story—almost too much. Though I am a fan of contemporary, so I didn’t mind the paranormal taking a backseat to the backstory and romance. I’m a kissing book person so all those kisses were my favorite parts. The threat to those kisses enthralled me, and I can’t wait for the next book.

If you love contemporary with a dash of something otherworldly, this is a wonderful book to check out. Amy Sparling has a great writing style and sucks you into the story. Can I have the next book yet?

This ended up being a really enjoyable book despite the fact that I almost put it down in the first chapter for a reason I'll explain in a minute.

But the premise is interesting, and one I haven't seen before. I honestly thought it would be just another forgettable vampire/human romance but the direction it took ended up being different and there were no vampires. The immortals in this book get their power by essentially draining the life essence of normal people via these stones that were created through alchemy hundreds of years ago.

This book was fairly short, more of a novella at 200 pages so the story was a little rushed and it definitely ended in a weird place. There are 2 more books in the series so I'm assuming that it's meant to be read more like one really long book instead of three separate ones.

Like I said, there was one thing that bothered me in this and it was at the very beginning of the book. I'm less steamed about it now since I read and enjoyed the rest of the book but still, here it is.
So, the main character, Cara is 18 years old and grew up in foster care but spent the past couple of years living with her uncle. Turns out uncle is losing his business and moving in with his girlfriend so Cara has to find somewhere else to live. She and her best friend, Riley have been saving up for a place but don't have enough for a down payment yet, right? Sure.

Here's the thing, though, they have $2,000 saved up. Cara and Riley want to move into an efficiency apartment (which, for those not in the know, is basically a shitty slum apartment) which she describes as looking "not very nice from the outside." But the rent is $1,200 a month.
I'm not joking when I say this literally stopped me reading this book for a little while. All I could think was, how the FUCK is an efficiency apartment 1,200 freaking dollars a month?
They are living in a small town in coastal Texas, by the way, in case you were wondering if this was a notoriously high rent area like New York or Southern CA. I actually took the time to google it and efficiency apartments in coastal Texas run around $500 to $600 a month, as they do in most places in the US. $1,200 a month in coastal Texas gets you an apartment with a gym and a pool.

It's a little thing but it bothered me a lot for some reason and made me think the author didn't do her research and might be a little out of touch, money-wise.

description

Cara and Riley are said to be dirt poor (that's why they take a shady job with the immortals in the first place) and always have been, so it's not like they're getting ripped off and not realizing it.
Cara also says that the two girls work at a shitty surf shop where they collectively bring in $2,000 a month but only manage to get about 20 hours a week. Another aspect that seemed unrealistic to me so I did the math and the girls would have to be making something like $13 an hour. The minimum wage in Texas is $7.25 an hour. She goes out of her way to say that this store is really shitty and hardly patronized but apparently it's capable of paying them almost twice the minimum wage.

When she hears that Cara is getting kicked out, Riley also laments that fact that they did the math and realized that after they pay the rent they'd only have $600 left over for other bills which BLEW MY MIND. You're 18! What other bills do you have? A phone bill? Neither of them have cars so they don't even need gas money. Are they paying $1,200 a month and not getting utilities covered because if so they need to call the fucking Better Business Bureau.

This was, overall, a very small portion of the book and they don't end up taking the apartment, so it doesn't even matter. It just all came out in the space of a few pages and it totally threw me off with it's wild impossibility. You know it's bad when a book has me doing math.

Like I said, otherwise it was a pretty good book. I intend to read the next ones in the series to see where it goes.

The Immortal Mark is a fun paranormal with an interesting twist. As always, Sparling's prose is easy to read and the story moves along at a fast pace. Cara and her best friend Riley are relatable characters who've faced their own share of challenges. Theo, the intense and mysterious guy Cara meets on her birthday, seems perfect at first, but he knows he needs to stay away from her for her own good. When Cara takes a new job and reconnects with Theo, the story picks up and we find out more about Theo's secret. I can't wait to find out what happens in the next installment!

Well written

This was a well-written, interesting book! I only rated it 3 stars because it was a whole lot of exposition- to the point where I started skimming. I know it was a set up to a larger, albeit interesting, story- but I got a bit bored. I actually wanted to hit her over the head and say “Dude- how do you not see the red flags?!” But still, I enjoyed the book and will read the next in the series.

I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I am going to be brutally honest about this book. Cara started off interesting enough but as soon as she met Theo she became another character who I nly thought about boys.

From the first moment Cara met Theo she became obsessed. Majority of the book was about how much she loved Theo and how much she thought they were perfect together and why isn't he here with her. This book had about four and a half hours worth of pining over a man. Yes there was somewhat of a plot but it was more about an 18 year old with a crush.

I can honestly say that I will not be listening to the next book in the seriesThe Immortal Truth. I don't think I can listen through another 5 to 6 hours about Cara and her feelings about Theo and how much Theo and her are meant to be together and how much her and Theo love each other. Maybe if I was younger this book would have been something I would have enjoyed but at this stage in life I can't deal with the melodrama. I do understand that Cara is 18 but still I think that she should feel that she deserves more than having to go back and forth with Theo.

Nope

This could have been good, it's an interesting concept but the writing is horrible. The main characters are dumb and it's Insta-love to the max. The girl is heartbroken after meeting him on time. Just sinful to read, I don't know how many times I rolled my eyes.

This seemed really short, but at the same time, I wanted the "Edward whines about danger repeatedly" part to be shorter.

Narrator did a good job. She fit the characters well and the performance was clear. Solid quality performance. I’d recommend listening.

The story was entertaining and I liked the characters. The way Cara’s friend Riley is described; as drawing on her eyebrows, gave me a weird picture in my head, but she’s actually an awesome friend. They are both too gullible though; especially for girls that grew up mostly in the foster system. Cara grew up very poor with a bad mother; she was placed in the foster system for years before living with her uncle for awhile. She’s 18 now, her uncle is moving without her, so she needs to find a new place quick. An out of this world “job” opportunity is offered to her and her friend; if it’s too good to be true and all that. These girls needed to use their brains more; it was red flag city when they were in the “job” interview. Turns out there’s some weird stuff going on. The romance is sweet; there’s a good connection between Cara and Theo. They have a rather quick connection with some good passion. There’s some interesting ideas to the story, but this book felt a little basic. There’s not a lot of exciting things happening; this book may be mostly a setup book for the rest of the series, but I would’ve liked a bit more of a grander story. I do want to know what happens in the rest of this series though, so that’s a plus. Overall, there was enough interesting elements to keep me entertained and wanting more.

Interesting story

I really enjoyed the story line. It was very creative and innovative. Very different from the usual stuff out there, that's starting to sound all alike. Now even though as I said I enjoyed this book. My reason for giving it 3 stars, is because I was so annoyed by the constant mention of Theo. He is the main male character of the story and Cara's love interest. We get it ! He's handsome, charming, gentle and blah, blah blah blah blah.
OMG ! It was so annoying to have to read Cara's constant reminder of Theo. It felt like these constant remainders were used to take up page space ( fillers ) for lack of more of the story line.. I somehow missed the fact that this was Book 1 of a series. This story could have been written in one book ! I don't understand why it's become " A THING " to break up a good story into several books just to make a couple of extra bucks. Lol.. I personally don't mind a little extra and the whole story in one book, rather then having a book broken up into several short Novellas . It's annoying. But that's my opinion. Anyway, a did like the author's fresh take. On the subject of immortality without it being about Vampires or other supernatural creatures. Which by the way are my favorite genres. I will recommend the book, just beware that the Theo thing might get to you. Or, maybe not.

3.5 stars...This book started out really good, then you have Cara & her best friend Riley get a job that they know nothing about just because the job gives 100,000 thousand dollars after a year and you get all the luxury living you want. They just take the job without thinking (this is too good to be true). Now none of these girls have any clue what the job is until Cara falls in love like in one day to Theo who is sworn by secretly to not let anyone know what jobs they do. Cara and the other girls have to wear a bracelet that they can never take off, Theo since meeting Cara has been telling her to run, go home do not take this job. Cara should have listened or at least thought more as to why Theo did not want her to take this job, which he could not tell her why he was bound to oath/ which if broken means death.
Death is going to have to come for him because he revealed to Cara and Riley what the bracelets really mean. He vows he will find a way to save them both especially the love of his life Cara... I really am tired of picking books that has so many series behind them/ If someday I fancy to finish this series I will, no hurry. It was a good storyline just did not attach to any of the characters. The instant love thing was way over done too... Recommend to ages 15yrs and up. Gina Clabo

4.5 stars

I really enjoyed this story and can not wait to listen to the next one.
Talk about having some bad luck turn to even worse luck, well maybe sort of lol. There's some crazy things happening here. While you think things are just starting to look up for these two young girls boom what is right before your eyes can be deceiving. Then there's Theo. Oh Theo I kind of want to kick you in the shine. This story is very slow paced for good reason. There's a lot of details that can not be missed. Along this journey you see love and devotion that if you stick together things can be accomplished. I really am looking forward to seeing how these three become a team and maybe fall completely in love along the way. Let's see if they get their second chance.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review."

Interesting

This was a touch different than my normal PNR novels. It reads more like a coming of age take, which makes sense as this would be ya/na, but it’s more than just the age - it’s the feel of the story and the substance of the narrative. It’s the perfect kiss, or that first date, or the dog that died and broke your heart.... those kind of novels. The inflection is there and just when I was ready to disregard the cover and look for the dying dog on the pier.... I get immortals.
So, it really IS a PNR, but one of subtleties, as we don’t really see anything that could account for the label until the end is near.

Pros:
- Unique
- Flows well
- narrative feels like an old friend.
- FMC in a PNR that FINALLY goes, “Hey, something is not right here...”. Oh, she still makes the bad choice, but at least she questions it!!!

Cons:
- Filler
- Hard to sink in to.

A quick but disappointing read!

I read the reviews on this before I purchased it. I'm not sure I read the same book as the 4 and 5 star reviews. The plot was unbelievably rushed. The main characters had almost no personality. And love the story was simply ridiculous. I'm all for a quick romance but this Insta attraction was at super speed which made it even less believable. I struggled to finish about half way. I did force myself to finish but won't be reading anything by this author again.

My review is based on the Audiobook. The Immortal Mark is an okay series starter. There are some pacing issues but the characters are likeable. I would have liked some more info on the Immortals and the insta-love was way to quick with no build up at all. Sarah Puckett did a great job as narrator. Her narration is what kept me interested. I think id I had been reading this story I would have skimmed alot of pages. I was interested enough to get book 2 if it is released in Audio.

AUDIOBOOK VERSION:

I was hooked from the beginning. I basically listened to this in one sitting. This series is soo intriguing and different. The 1st book does a lot of building. The author did a wonderful job of dangling carrots at the end that leave me drooling for the next installment. This is not a stand alone so don't expect anything to be completed with this book alone :) Love this series and can't wait for the next book! Thanks!

Not to leave the narrator out- She did a wonder job!

Do you ever start a book thinking, "Okay, this plot sounds promising. Ooh, flawed, normal character - YES. Kickass best friend? Check! And then ... oh, hot bad boy, okay... broody, too, might be okay..." yeah... NO. This book had so much promise... and then it went really bad, really fast. Insta-love, insta-lust, etc etc. All the fun of vampires without, yanno, *actual* vampires. Will not be moving on to the rest of the trilogy.

Creative read

Ah, Theo. That bad boy has such potential! I look forward to seeing how his character grows.

The heroine, Cara, is a timid young woman who starts to come out of her shell by the end of book 1.

The characters have depth and the story is creative and interesting.

Things are just starting to amp up in book 1 when it ends (yes there is a cliffhanger) and I look forward to seeing what happens in book 2.

I like that it is a twist on immortality. I would have liked for the story to get to the immortal mark sooner, however i did enjoy how they allowed us to get to know each character. I think that gets us more invested in the story. Theo is a good guy and hopefully he finds a way. Cara and riley are two great characters. Cant wait for the next one.

I really enjoyed reading The Immortal Mark by Amy Sparling. Cara and Riley come across a job with great pay and room and board. But they find themselves in a bad situation. Theo is a man who she meets and falls for. Everything at her job isn't as it seems, but Theo is there and trying to save her life. I can't wait to read more by Amy Sparling.

Eh it’s okay

This book is extremely slow. It has a GREAT plot and all that. But it’s crazy slow and nothing really happens in the first book. I am interested in the rest of the story. But I’m not sure I want to read the rest of the series if it’s this slow.
