In Merigan Stories from the World of Star’s Reach, author John Michael Greer brings together eight authors in a shared-world anthology of brand new tales inspired by his popular novel, Star’s Reach. These are stories of the far future in a world where fossil fuel-powered industrial civilization is a distant memory and new societies have emerged.
John Michael Greer is an author of over thirty books and the blogger behind The Archdruid Report. He served as Grand Archdruid of the Ancient Order of Druids in America. His work addresses a range of subjects, including climate change, peak oil, the future of industrial society, and the occult. He also writes science fiction and fantasy. He lives in Rhode Island with his wife.
This is an anthology of short stories all set in the fictional future created by John Michael Greer for his excellent novel Star’s Reach. As is nearly always the case in an anthology two of the stories struck me as excellent, one was very hard to follow and the rest were good enjoyable stories. The collection was shorter than I expected when I bought it and took just under 24 hours to finish, with several extended breaks to do household tasks intertwined between stories. I enjoyed the stories and think this is a good choice for anyone who enjoyed the foundation novel Star’s Reach, however if you are not familiar with the novel some of the stories would be hard to follow because the authors drop you into a complex scenario that doesn’t make a lot of sense without knowing the background information. I recommend this collection but strongly urge reading the novel first.
