Cute, cute, cute! It was really a cute book! A bit of romance, a lot of giggling, a bit of laughing out loud, at times too much graphic details :))
But definitely liked Rayne! She is funny, she is kind, she is smart too!
I didn't expect much from this book, to be honest. But there are couple of good twists in the storyline too.
So all time around it kept me entertained :))

“You don’t want to know the things that go through my head. Trust me, it’s Crazyland up there.” (Rayne Meyers)

rating: 4.5 stars
I enjoyed this funny, heart-warming story so much. I was laughing and smiling at Rayne’s antics, her singular way of thinking, blunt observations, and charming innocence.
Rayne is a mess.
“Some people had big eyes when it came to eating. I had enormous eyes when it came to life, but also the attention span of a squirrel on crack when it boiled down to following through.”

Rayne has a unique spin when speaking of things that many of us might find difficult to talk about, especially relations with the opposite sex. Her verbal diarrhea kept me turning the pages. There were great pop culture references throughout the story that had me nodding my head. The author’s usage of the heroine’s stream of consciousness gave the book it’s quirky charm when she explains her modern philosophies about the simple and complex facets of life. I felt Rayne’s doubts and insecurities were totally relatable to most females. I was able to recognize similar situations from my past and often found myself mentally shouting “yes” to the musings going through Rayne’s head.

There were many funny sayings and descriptions that compelled me to highlight so I could go back and laugh at them again.
“I doodle dicks. I don’t know why, but they’re the only thing I know I can draw aside from Snoopy.”
My obsession with doodling dicks was probably part of the reason I couldn’t take sex seriously. Penises were funny, especially when one doodled mustaches and hats on them.”

This story is told in the first person point of view from Rayne. I was so drawn to the story that I didn’t even notice. It had a chick lit feel when you meet Rayne and her friends bantering about her latest life crisis. Her life at age 30 is not in the place she thought it would be. Rayne decides to look for some adventure as the personal assistant to the rich and famous. Against all odds, she is hired to help a famous businessman who has a leg injury. The hiring process she goes through is one of my favorite parts of the book. Her quirky way of thinking is so outside the box that she finds herself hired to accompany this older gentleman on a luxury yacht to Florida. There she meets Hale, the distinguished son of her boss.

Hale seems like a bit of a stick in the mud, and he becomes the target for many of Rayne’s nervous and outrageous outbursts. Fortunately her quirkiness shakes him out of his stodgy facade, and he decides to open up to the possibility of getting to know a charmingly different woman. At this point the story becomes a complicated romance that develops between two opposites that surprisingly attract. I didn’t think I would like the buttoned up Hale at first. Then he does some things that melted my heart. I went from liking him to loving this guy. Rayne’s little disasters and amusing banter is the opposite of what he’s used to in his ordered life. He’s captivated and decides to take a chance on getting to know her.

Hale is so patient and sweet to Rayne once he realizes she needs him to take things slowly and build up her confidence as a woman. He is shocked that she has never enjoyed sex.
“I was not a pro-baller. I was a gutter ball heaver. I was the girl version of a pre-ejaculator….”
Hale is difficult for Rayne to read, but once he reveals a terrible breakup in his past, she understands why he has his fences up. Hale has to work hard to help Rayne believe that he’s really interested. She has never been seriously invested in a relationship and is very unsure about her appeal. She needs careful guidance to her sexual awakening and to trust that this attractive man has genuine feelings. Once she discovers that having lots of sex is fun and very satisfying with Hale, she shares a funny parody from a favorite book of mine.
“Dr. Seuss could have written smutty poetry about me. I did it on a boat and by a moat. I did it in a car and on a bar. I did it on the floor and by a door. I did it here and there. I did it everywhere!”

These two people complete the other in an odd, but endearing way. Their initial awkwardness and growing relationship kept me reading. There were times that Rayne’s tendency to doubt herself or Hale was frustrating. Hale also tries to clam up when Rayne asks him to share his problems. Hale finally reveals some ugly truths about his past that helps Rayne to stick to their developing relationship and be there for him when he really needs her. Likewise, Hale pushes Rayne to face her fears and to stop the pattern of running away from her problems. I loved it when Rayne says that Hale is the other half of her puzzle she had been trying to solve for years. It sums up how I felt about these two finding one another. Sometimes this couple would take two steps forward and one step back when dealing with their insecurities and problems. But this is also why I liked them. Their flaws made them more real.

Once this couple establishes their relationship, Hale has a life-changing event that immediately requires Rayne’s support. Rayne shows a new growing maturity when she accepts the challenge and the commitment. Unfortunately there is a sudden crisis that Rayne has to handle back home that will cause a separation from Hale for an indefinite period of time. Hence with their promises of love and to reunite soon, the story ends on a cliffhanger that will be picked up in the next book. Arghhh! Even though it’s frustrating to have to wait, I look forward to seeing how these two go forward after a crisis interrupts their blossoming relationship.

This story was really entertaining because of its humor and the relatable musings of the female lead. Silly little things like what Rayne would do if she didn’t get a job interview and her goofy justifications is an example of why I loved her.
“ Then I would have some ice cream because it was rude to leave half a pint in the freezer for more than a day.”
Now that’s a girl after my own heart.

There’s nothing better than a non-stop giggle fest while reading. Lydia Michaels’ Calamity Rayne Gets A Life will definitely keep you in grin mode. With a generous measure of humor and passion, this one will make you laugh, cry, and cringe with embarrassment.
Rayne Meyers has no idea what to do with her life. At 30, she lacks any major accomplishments and her sex life is non-existent. Although she has a degree in education, she’s barely making ends meet waitressing. When her best friend suggests she try something completely different, like a personal assistant to a wealthy businessman, Rayne is hesitant. Waiting on people and following directions was not something she excelled at, but she liked money and she needed it badly. Being a PA to the right person could pay off.
Working for a man like Remington Davenport though opens up a world to which Rayne is completely unaccustomed. And she certainly doesn’t know what to make of his son, Hale. Stoic, guarded, and powerful but with a body that is sheer male perfection, he makes Rayne even more nervous and awkward in her new surroundings. But when it seems the attraction isn’t just one sided, she discovers a whole new side to Hale Davenport.
Rayne was such a quirky, real heroine. She had a tendency to stress in the face of commitment, and run when things got challenging. The thoughts that went through her head were hilarious. And then I realized I had many of the same insecurities. Her doodling obsession and references to “the sex” kept me in stitches. I loved watching her transformation throughout her new life. She was still hysterical but she was really growing into the person she was destined to be.
Hale gave me hot flashes! Stoic but also vulnerable, he made me melt when he let his guard down. I completely fell in love. He was unbelievably sweet and so funny when he embraced his silly side. I loved seeing the changes Rayne brought out in him. He learned to lighten up and that it was okay to be unsure and imperfect. They were so totally opposite yet they brought out the best in each other.
I love any type of romance but sometimes I need a break from all the angst and just want to giggle. And this story definitely proves that even the funny stories can be just as steamy as their dramatic counterparts. Calamity Rayne promises a good time to be had by all. Plus, there’s more to come in the series, and I for one can’t wait.

Calamity Rayne

I was nervous and scared going into this book because rom-coms don't always work for but I'm happy to report that I enjoyed this book. It was funny but there was a lot more to it than that. I loved watching the heroine grow, she's still awkward and ridiculous but she shows signs of maturity.

OMG you must read this book . I have never ever laughed so hard at a book . This is the story of Rayne Meyers a thirty year old woman who needs to get her life together . The day she gets the pa job for a influential family her life turned upside down will she survive with her heart intact .
This is one fun book poor Rayne is so messed up in such a fun way . She just turned thirty and in the need of a change of job . At the beginning of this book you really just wanted to shake her and tell her to get her life together . She is such a basket case and i loved it . She is a no holds bar tell it like it is kind of girl who sometimes has diarrhea of the mouth or she clams right up around a certain man . Love how she calls sex the sex and doodles penises in her free time . She does a lot of growing up by the end of the book . Hale is what can i say he is hot and really kind of a sweet guy when his guard is down . You will fall in love with him he would do anything for his family . They are a sweet couple together . He takes and love Rayne and all her crazy .
This is a fun read , you will laugh and cry and oh so laugh again . The characters are so well written and the author really has fun with them . You get to see a crazy fun loving side of this author and the way she writes is brilliant. The book reads like a movie in your mind . You can see Rayne and her crazy as it all plays out . So if you want a fun read check it out you will not be disappointed .

I’ve been dragging my feet trying to finish this book and I’ve just come to the conclusion that it’s not going to happen. I like Rayne well enough but she also irritates me. I admire her drive to get the job and she seems smart but then does silly things. I may try again in the future but for now, it’s a DNF.

This is a sweet romance that was also quite funny. Rayne is a heroine I could really relate to. She’s goofy but a loyal friend. She tends to brain fart when confronted with a situation outside her comfort zone, but her decisions make perfect sense for someone as inexperienced as she is at the ripe age of thirty. Her heart is as big as all outdoors and she has zero malice in her bones. I wanted to hug her every time someone was mean or manipulative towards her.

Rayne accepts a position as personal assistant to the rich and famous Mr. Davenport, a notorious womanizer and cutthroat businessman. His son, however, is another story. Devastatingly handsome, Hale makes Rayne’s heart palpitate although she’s certain such a suave and experienced man would never notice a calamity like her.

I loved the slow burn as the two develop feelings for each other, even as others try to keep them apart. I was frustrated with the cliffhanger ending and need to pick up a copy of the second book to satisfy my curiosity.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

OK this was cute. The updated cover is actually ridiculous though and I like the original cover much better.

Rayne was adorable and hilarious and I found myself smiling and laughing while reading this book. Normally I enjoy my books on the dark and dirty side, but this was a nice breath of fresh air and it reminded me why I love romance so much. Not everything has to be passion and heartbreak and grit. It can be light and funny and silly and it reminded me not to take everything in life so seriously and to enjoy the adventure.

This was my first time reading this author but I'll definitely be checking out her backlist because I was thoroughly entertained!

Thoughts:

- Rayne is really different from the FMC I'm used to. The first thing about her is she draws pen!s doodles. The way she called it 'Erotic Graffiti' was hilarious. She has so much self-doubt and she thinks too much. But she's strong when she needed to be. I mean she always called Remington's BS whenever needed. She has flaws. I guess that's human. No one is perfect after all.

- Hale. Well, according to me, he's more beta than an alpha. I liked him up until chapter ten. But my feelings for him turned neutral after that.

- I liked Remington

- I wish the characters had better communication skills. But I guess it was one of the points that they wanted to improve their communication with each other.

- The bedroom scenes were kinda awkward at the beginning between Rayne and Hale. Especially when Rayne invited Hale to her bedroom. The awkwardness was getting on my nerves at one point. But it got better as time went by. Not entirely though. However, it's totally my own opinion. Other readers might feel differently.

- Damn, the f*cked up family dynamics was reminding me of 'Gossip Girl' and 'Game of Thrones' minus the incest and violence. It was... something. I did not like the situation but it was believable and realistic. At least to me. Because tbh I know how f*cked up the world is.

- Barrett and Rayne's interactions were funny. Reminding me of Joey and him saying to every hot women 'How u doin'?'😂

- The first time Rayne was

- Both Hale and Rayne were flawed and broken. But it felt like together, they actually made sense. I'm glad despite having so many issues and crazy family dramas, they belong together.

Character development and plot could've been better. However, I liked the writing style. The author has a way of writing the characters that you'd be confused about how you feel about them. I felt like there was no need to leave it on a cliffhanger or make a book two. Ugh. At least leave a warning about the cliffhanger on synopsis.

3.5 ⭐️ rounded up

The first 2/3 of this book was 5 stars for me! I laughed out loud several times and really enjoyed the writing and the characters. I loved Rayne and Hale together, and even enjoyed Remington as a grumpy old man. Then came the last 1/3 of the book… it was almost like reading a different book. It was FULL of drama, and I started disliking Hale as a character. Remington ended up just being awful, and it was almost unbelievable that Hale would be in the position he was in. By the end of the book, it felt like Rayne and Hale were in an almost toxic relationship. It got uncomfortable at times, especially with his possessiveness.

I didn’t love that the book ended on a cliffhanger, especially since it was so long and drawn out at the end, but after the last 1/3 of the book I’m not 100% sure I would want to continue reading the second one.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me a copy in exchange for my honest review!!

“An awkward girl’s account of inexperience, sexual mishaps, and too much tequila…”

Calaity Rayne: Gets a Life by @ is a riot! This book had me cracking up with the first chapter and never let up! Calamity needs to be my best friend. The girl doodles d*cks! I have never connected with anyone more in my life🤪.

Ok seriously, this was a very funny and also heart warming rom com that I devoured in a day. Calamity is a wonderful character who might be slightly awkward and out of her element working as a personal assistant for a very wealth family, but she owns it! Perfect book to curl up with and escape the frigid temperatures outside. Loved that the story had some depth as well as romance and spice. Bummer that the book ended on a cliffhanger and I now need book 2 😫. 4.5⭐️

Thank you to Netgalley for an eARC in exchange for my honest review!

This book had a really strong start. Rayne, the female protagonist is hilarious and her inner dialogue was very relatable. I felt a connection to her throughout the book because she was very down to earth and struggled a lot with her place in the world. Her relationship with Hale was definitely fast and I didn't expect them to get together as quickly as they did, but it felt natural. It wasn't until about a little over halfway through the book that I started to have some difficulty finishing the book.

The second half of the book was filled with what seemed like one problem after the other, which was thrust upon you seemingly out of nowhere. There were brief hints of something that was going on with Hale but the truth was shocking. In addition, I just felt like everyone was putting too much pressure on Rayne, considering she and Hale had only been together for a few weeks when everything went down. Rayne also has her own issues, which are understandable given her history, but it caused a lot of unnecessary miscommunications between the couple.

There were also some character traits that were presented in Hale and his father that we were just expected to accept, even though they were, in my opinion, toxic, and that threw me off at the end.

In terms of the ending, I felt that the book seemed a little long and it was hard to get through the ending, but at the same time, everything felt rushed. There were a lot of details thrown at you towards the end with no resolution because this book is part of a series. I was not led to believe this was part of a series so it was unexpected when the book ended on a cliffhanger that was seemingly out of nowhere. If I was aware the book was a series, I would have been in a different mindset to expect unresolved issues.

Overall, I could tell that the author put a lot of thought into what they wanted to include in the story and where they wanted to go with it. Personally, this book was not really my cup of tea, but I can see why others enjoy it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Read if you like:
☀️ snarky, humorous narrator
☀️ long chapters
☀️ boss x employee romance
☀️ grump x sunshine
☀️ single POV

Rayne Meyers is a little bit down on her luck lately, but she knows all she really needs to turn this around is a nice cushy assistant job working for a rich family in a beautiful tropical land 🤪 And what would you know it but the richest family in town is actually looking for some help while the patriarch of the family Remington Davenport recovers from a heart attack AND a broken leg. After a few disastrous and painful phone calls to make her dreams come true she actually gets the job! 😮
I love that the chapters are named!! (and I feel like all the books I read as a kid had chapter titles, and I honestly really miss it! It gives you a little sneak peak of what’s to come in the chapter.
The author’s writing style was right up my alley and I absolutely loved it. She was snarky and sarcastic and hilarious all at once! It was very enjoyable to read with this narration, and also I didn’t want to stop reading because it was just hilarious.
I really liked the main character, and there were a lot of unlikeable characters getting into conflict with the MC, and I absolutely loved the banter between characters. The sarcastic care-free attitude the MC had when interacting with these unlikeable characters actually made me giggle out loud 🙊
I enjoyed the inclusion of some text messages between the characters because, although the book is a single POV it also lets us see a tiny bit into the view of others surrounding the MC.
I think this is my favourite romance troupe: grouchy guy who gets mad at anything the girl says/does and then a sunshine girl who takes joy in annoying the boy 🤣 It creates excellent and funny banter between the characters, and I loved reading it 💕
I would absolutely recommend this book to literally anyone 🤪 but especially anyone who likes to laugh while you are reading! I love LOL rom coms!

Rayne is a mess. She is in a dead end job. She has commitment issues. When her friend suggests she contact the Davenport family for a job helping the head of the Davenport family who has had a heart attack. Not thinking she calls the number her friend gives her for the oldest Davenport son and gets an interview. She also gets a job. Now she can live like the other half does. It is not what she expected. She loves but also hates Remington, the patriarch of the family, for whom she works. She challenges him but falls in love with the son. She is different for them. She remains independent and does not do what is expected of her. Rayne keeps them on their toes.

I loved Rayne. She knows what she is and is not necessarily looking to change. Working for Remington Davenport expands her horizons. Falling for Hale shoots down all the negative ideas she has about herself and relationships. She brings out his human side. There are times I knew Hale was out of his depth with Rayne. She is a regular person in a new circumstance who makes the most of her time at the top. Reality intrudes and she knows where her duties lie but it clashes where her heart is. I liked how Rayne created a relationship with Remington. She was not his doormat and does not put up with his garbage. Hale has problems with trust but Rayne is able to bring a change in him. She has a good influence on them all.

First…this has a huge cliff hanger so my advice is to purchase this one, then have book two ready to read on release day…because this book is so funny, heartwarming, and just plain fun…you need to have the second one in the queue!
Rayne is stuck. She’s graduated from college but realizes that she doesn’t want to teach. She is feeling she’s at a dead end and living at home with her mom. She’s also just turned 30. So NOT where she wants to be at this time in her life. Her friend Elle encourages her to figure out what she wants to do and then do it!
A spur of the moment resume submission gets her to a job interview so far out of her wheelhouse, she knows she’s not qualified but goes to the interview just for the free trip! A comedy of errors including lost luggage, speaking her mind, the wrong clothes, and meeting the other people being interviewed, culminates with Rayne getting the job…now the real story begins.
A trip on a yacht, falling for her boss’s son, being so far out of her comfort zone, misunderstandings, and THEN the cliff hanger…suffice it to say…this book has it all. As the title says, Rayne ‘Gets a life’,or perhaps, life grabs her kicking and screaming into a fabulous new adventure.
This is the first book of Lydia Michaels I’ve read. I’m sold. Fun characters and I’ll continue reading her books.

Oh boy, how did I know that Calamity Rayne: Gets A Life would end in a cliffhanger.  The good news is I have Calamity Rayne #2 on my kindle now and it will be published on November 28th so not too long of a wait now.

Rayne is a waitress and is ready to change her life. Rayne is a bit of a “Calamity” (disaster), hence the name of the book. She ends up taking a position as a Personal Assistant to a very wealthy Remington Davenport, Hale’s father.  Rayne does start to come into her own by the end of the book.  And, it is fun to see the changes.

I loved reading Calamity Rayne: Gets A Life -  Rayne Meyer is 30 years old and finally having her sexual awakening.  She has never really been interested in sex but Hale Davenport will change all that.  I love the smutty poetry.

“Hello, my name is Rayne Meyers, and I really like sex.  Really. Dr. Seuss could have written smutty poetry about me. I did it in a car and on a bar.  I did it on the floor and by a door.  I did it here and there.  I did it everywhere!”

Calamity Rayne is an enjoyable book to read with some LOL moments.  I look forward to reading Calamity Rayne #2.

I got this copy of Calamity Rayne on Kindle Unlimited and I give it 5 stars.

How can a candle hold so much pressure? Rayne Meyers is sitting with her best friend Elle at their favorite coffee shop celebrating her thirtieth birthday with a chocolate muffin.

She should have a life plan by now instead of waitressing at the same bar since she left college. Sure, she has a teaching degree, but she realized that having that much control over someone else's child was too much adulting.

Her nickname wasn't Calamity without cause. She was a wreck and her version of adulting was called avoidance. To run away from anything that meant a long-term commitment. And forget relationships... she didn't understand what the hype was about because in the few relationships she had was nothing exciting.

So what should her birthday wish be? She needed a change. Something out of the ordinary so she can figure out her life. Looking through the discarded Rolling Stone magazine a vacation getaway sounded great... except her measly funds couldn't afford a vacation.

Then Elle told her to update her resume and apply to be a personal assistant in an exotic location. Like a paid vacation. Elle is at the gym and as she is staring at her usual eye candy is distracted by a report on CNN. Remington Davenport, the billionaire, was about to be released from the hospital and would need an assistant while he recovered.

I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. Warning - this series is about the calamity that is Rayne so don't expect a happily-ever-after at the of this book.

Rayne is hilarious. This book is totally her POV and the justifications in her head will keep you laughing. Remington is an egotistical pain with no moral compass that Rayne feels a fatherly affection for despite his manipulations. Hale is the oldest son whom Elle referred to as THE OTHER and totally out of Rayne's orbit. He is rich, gorgeous and has his life together. But even those in control have life throw them in a loop.

You will laugh and you will shake your head, but you will have no choice but to turn the pages to see what calamity Rayne will find herself in next. Just when she thinks she has adulting down pat and will get her happlily ever after a nightmare tears her life apart.

Highly recommend and can't wait to continue this series!

“Some people had big eyes when it came to eating. I had enormous eyes when it came to life."

This is a genre I can't see to give up despite thinking to myself every time I read a book, "this is the last one" simply because I cannot get enough... even though I HAVE HAD ENOUGH.

Workplace romance hits a spot for me. Always has, always will, probably because that's how my story began. I didn't love a single character. I thought they were messy and chaotic... but what rom com does not hold a piece of that in its soul. I enjoyed it enough to say I will be picking up book two.

Unfortunately... fortunately? Who knows.

Well, that was one of the more spicy books I have read in a while!
In this highly enjoyable and blush-inducing series opener, we meet Rayne. She's searching for her next move in life career-wise and lands an amazing but difficult job as the personal assistant to a billionaire. As things in her life progress in extremely interesting ways, she is forced to navigate feelings unfamiliar to her and decide just what she is willing to put up with to make certain commitments.
This ends in quite the cliffhanger, but I hope to find out what happens next very soon.

I was looking for a fun, romantic, light hearted read and this fit the bill exactly. If you're squeamish about sex scenes, you might want to skip this one though. They are there (and oh my, in detail) but they are not the main focus of the book. I enjoyed getting to know Rayne, Hale, and even Remington and am looking forward to the second book.

This story touched home for me, Rayne is a walking, talking disaster. Her character had me looking at myself @ that age, so much in common, except she had more going on, I wasn't so complete. Can't wait for the 2nd part of this story. Have a feeling it's not as comical as the 1st part.

I love Rayne! She is complex strong and also very insecure.
I knew this was book one, didn’t expect the author to leave me hanging.
I may just decide to change the end; “and they lived happily ever after”

A massive cliffy, so if you're not a fan of those better yet wait for the other books. Regardless, it doesn't diminish the fact that Lydia Michaels is a good writer and storyteller.

I like the amount of spice in this book, but the amount of drama was not worth it
