Rate this book

meh. the translations didn't really hit. 2.5 ⭐

chopra's essay did well in introducing the poets and their selected poems, however, i couldn't see or feel the passion he wanted to communicate. i was looking forward to how divine love and divine intoxication were evoked by famous poets of colour but i was underwhelmed. the translations are subjective to chopra's interpretation and while i'm sure chopra is a masterful translator and writer, i just couldn't connect to this version of rumi and hafiz's poems. though, i was pleasantly surprised to find the works of a south asian female poet, mirabai! and i must say, tagore's poems were the ones i had tagged the most. here are some of my favourites:
Reproof by Rumi
Why boast of your strength?
The same wind that can topple a tree
Caresses the grass.

Spontaneity by Kabir
When you feel most alive, find out why.
This is one guest you won't greet twice.

Merging by Kabir
A drop melting into the ocean—
That you can see.
The ocean melting into a drop—
Who sees that?

Listen! by Rabindranath Tagore
Listen, my heart, to the whispering of the world.
That is how it makes love to you.

My Sign by Rabindranath Tagore
My heart beats in waves
on the shore of the world
And writes its name in tears
with these words:
"I love you."

The King and the Beggar by Rabindranath Tagore
[...] I got home that night and emptied my sack on the floor, only to spy a grain of gold gleaming there in the heap. Then, how bitterly I wept. If you did this for a tiny grain of wheat, what would you return if I had given you everything?

The Soul's Pain by Rabindranath Tagore
I feel this pang inside—
Is it my soul trying to break out,
Or the world's soul trying to break in?

What a soulful piece of art. The great spirituality, although beautiful, can be misunderstood sometimes, and bringing it out with beautiful colors and rays to the world makes it more palatable to many. The poems in themselves were inspiring, and the translation was sincere. I especially love Kabir’s.

Soul in love is a short little book to give you the right dash of inspiration on a gloomy day.

Re-introduced me to Tagore, and the Tagore selections are amazing! The Rumi and Hafez selections less so--but then, I am so set about the favourites there that Chopra could not have made me happy unless he had read my mind. Overall, a beautiful book.

I have read a large majority of this book and I like it, but I don’t love it. This is a great book to introduce Western scholars/poetry lovers to Eastern poetry, but it is not entirely inclusive. Deepak Chopra’s “translations” are more like interpretations and he fails to embody the Hindu & Islamic influences within the poetry. Chopra is not the only translator of Eastern poets to do this, but he contributed to the erasure of Eastern religion, to make the poems more palpable for a Western audience.

This article in the New Yorker was really enlightening to read alongside this book: https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-.... I would give this article a read & read this poetry collection with caution.

I do love the poets that Chopra included in this collection. I had read a lot of Tagore’s more popular poetry in other anthologies that I own, but I was captivated by Rumi & Hafiz’s linguistic simplicity. Other translations of both poets reflect the same simplicity.

The Soul in Love is a small sampler of 5 important God-intoxicated poets from the east: Rumi, Kabir, Hafiz, Mirabai, and Tagore. Each of them permits us access to their ecstatic worlds in their own unique way. The handy little book is a gentle nudge to explore these poets in more depth -- I for one, already a lifetime devotee of Rumi -- having read some Hafiz -- am now ready to read Tagore. Deepak Chopra's insightful introduction essay is worth reading twice.

I loved it! I do wish there had been more poems by Rumi and Mirabai though. I felt like Tagore had the most, and I liked his the least. They were still good though! I just liked the others more. Good book to be introduced to these different poet's work.

So, so beautiful it brings shivers. It'd definitely be five stars from me, save that some of my favorites from these poets were missing.
