Rate this book
Whatever It Takes is a wide-ranging and highly entertaining read, in which Congressman J. D. I started reading this before Donald Trump's comments regarding immigration and the debates over Sanctuary Cities resulting from the Kate Steinle murder. Published in 2006 by now former Congressman J.D. Hayworth of Arizona, the well-researched book focuses on our country's poor border security on the Southern border, the Mexican government's interest in promoting illegal immigration, and the huge economic burden to our country through this issue. Sadly it is obvious to everyone that our country's immigration system is dysfunctional, but our political leaders from both parties are entrenched in the quagmire of doing nothing for their inaction promotes their own political gain. You may think since it was published nine years ago, that the information would be out-date--the only changes have been made during the Obama administration which have only further polarized the issue, and made our border more unsafe for U.S. citizens as well as immigrants. Probably the most interesting point in the book, is that Mexico relies on $17 billion in annual remittances from Mexicans working in the U.S. back to their families in Mexico. That is more money than Mexico earns from tourism, or foreign investment, and is probably more important to their economy than the state-owned oil industry. Another point is that Mexico relies on immigration to 'solve' their weak economy and unemployment problem, by simply exporting their laborers. A concise, easily digested book. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the immigration issue.

This book discusses Arizona Congressman J.D. Hayworth's views on what America should we do to address our Country's border crisis, and his answer is "Whatever it takes".

There are people who feel that our Country can't function without the labor of "guest workers" and / or illegal aliens, but he has a response for all of those arguements. There is no question about his passion about securing our borders in the post 9/11 world we live in.

There are many arguments to be made about whether or not "guest workers" should be permitted, and the effect of illegal aliens on our work force, how they affect wages in our Country, and how health and education benefits (and therefore taxes) are impacted. Scary and significant to me are the inane laws and policies he mentions protecting known gang members and others blatantly taking advantage of the system.

It's timely reading and topical as the 2008 presidental election approaches.

If you have an "open borders" friend, give them this book. If you are interested to learn what illegal immigration is doing to our economy, education system, and healthcare system read this book. The trojan horse is in America.

Didn't like it, or the author, but I finished it from beginning to end. Still a worthwhile read to try to understand opinions that are different than mine.

Good, logical thoughts about what it takes to end the immigration crisis at the USA's southern border.

The sad thing is that this book was written in 2006. But if you didn't know that, you would think it was written yesterday! In the 15 years since it was first published, there have been no LASTING changes to slow the number of people illegally crossing our border. I use the term "lasting" because the number did decrease in 2019 and 2020. However, recent changes in the methods used to deal with illegal border crossings have caused the numbers to revert to ever-increasing heights.

Our leaders need to quit worrying about their political careers and start worrying about the people who already live in this country legally.

This was a very informative book. Defending the borders of this country requires involves so much. I think every citizen of the United States should read this book.

Typical white country good, brown people and country bad. This kind of writing really is so dehumanizing.

This book is written by a congressman and is somewhat similar to material found in Mexifornia. It was written in 1996 which makes it almost 5 years out of date. It might have gotten a 4 star if it were current. A lot of good material but obviously neither a Republican or Democrat president is going to do anything about illegal immigration etc.

By the way our stake created the Far West Ward today and we are members of it!

A book that every American should read. It will, however, make your blood boil when you realize how our no-spine politicians bow to the whims of the "foreign" block just because they are more vocal.
