Una historia sencilla y dulce, a medio camino entre la infantil y la juvenil, sobre Mai, una niña vietnamita, que a raíz de la devastadora guerra de Vietnam, es adoptada por una familia latinoamericana.

Me hubiera gustado un poco más de profundidad y de extención en la novela, porque siento que pudo ser mucho más de lo que acabó siendo. Aún así, es una lectura agradable y bonita, con buenos valores, que te deja un regusto agradable.

Este libro tiene un gran significado para mi. Fue mi primera novela, lo leí a los 9 años con ayuda de mi madre. Le doy las 5 estrellas porque es difícil lograr que a los niños les guste la lectura y a mi me atrapó. Ahora tengo una red social de lectura, así que este libro finalmente logró su cometido.

La historia inicia cuando un niño le grita a Mai en forma de insulto que es
adoptada porque ella tiene los ojos chinos y el resto de su familia no, ella
confundida se lo pregunta a su madre quien le explica que hay dos tipos de
madres: las madres biológicas y las del corazón, y que ella es su madre del
corazón.
Luego se inicia a narrar la historia de Mai antes de ser adoptada, descubrimos
que Mai vivía en Vietnam y que fue en medio de un bombardeo como murió
su madre.
La pequeña Mai, fue encontrada por tres niños en medio de los escombros,
estos la recogieron y al no tener recursos para cuidarla la dejaron en un
orfanato, del que fue adoptada por la familia Gómez.

I's trying to read books that have been on my shelf a long time. This includes books in Spanish. I read them to better my understanding of the language. This book is aimed at 12 year olds. It tells the story of a Vietnamese orphan and how she got to the US.

Libro destinado a lectores infantiles-juveniles pero que sin duda ofrece una agradable lectura adulta, se lee muy rápido y es una historia muy bien narrada sobre la adopción de una niña de Vietnam huérfana de guerra.

Compré este libro de segunda mano porque la escritora, Hilda Perera, es la autora del primer libro que leí en el colegio en primaria. Es una historia triste pero dulce. Una delicia leerla.

En mi opinión es un libro muy corto que lo puedes leer en menos de 24 h, sin embargo no es una historia que me haya atrapado desde el inicio y fue por ello que me tarde mucho en acabarlo y se me hizo pesada y un poco confusa, empieza contándote sobre la vida de Mai y luego se cambia a un plano completamente diferente, eso fue lo que me confundió un poco.

En la trama de la historia se me hizo todo muy fluido y me iba atrapando más y más la historia, pero de pronto ZAZ! Acaba así como así, si hubieran alargado la historia me
hubiera encantado y hubiera dejado de lado lo del inicio pero no fue así y fue por ello que me decepcionó un poco y me dejo con ganas de saber un poco más.

Es el primer libro que me prestan, una prima muy cercana a mi, estábamos viendo unos libros que tiene en una parte pequeña en el cuarto de su mamá y fue ahí cuando me dijo, “llévatelo, y cuando lo acabes lo traes y así te vas llevando y trayendo los libros que quieras”, puede que para ustedes no tenga mucho sentido pero en ese momento me hizo sentir muy bien, son de esas cosas pequeñas que te llenas de amor y de confianza. <3

Snapshot: This story is about a little girl named Mai. She was just a baby when through the mist of the Vietnam War and with the help of another child she made it to a Catholic Orphanage. They brought her to the United States, where she was adopted by a Hispanic family. The book starts with Mai discovering that she was adopted and her mother's attempt to explain where she came from.

Hook: It is a short book with easy vocabulary.

Students in mind: This book is great for everyone. Students who have adopted siblings or a multi-racial family might find this book interesting.

Challenges: The biggest challenge in this book is the writing style- Perera starts in the present and throughout the book jumps to different points in the past. For example, chapter 2 takes us back to Saigon, Vietnam and explains how Mai became an orphan. Then chapter 3 takes us to the moment that Maria (Mai's adoptive mother) decides to adopt a child.

Conference Notes: What do you think is the real reason why that boy told Mai that she was adopted? When do you think is the right moment to tell someone that they are adopted? Is there a right moment? What do you think became of Ting Li and Ong? Do you know anyone who has survived a war?

Only read up to chapter 7 with the class at Hoover. Do not plan on finishing, but it was a good book up to where I stopped.
