The conclusion to the third Ark Royal trilogy!

The Second Interstellar War - pitting humans and their Tadpole allies against an enigmatic alien empire - appears to have stalemated. Neither side can push through to the other’s core systems without risking substantial losses, neither side can gain a decisive advantage. But when a brilliant human scientist invents a way to jump across the stars without a gravity tramline, an opportunity arises to strike the enemy in their undefended rear. It is an opportunity that cannot be allowed to pass.

Now, HMS Vanguard and her crew - and the largest fleet ever assembled by the nations of Earth - heads out on a do-or-die mission to challenge their enemies to one final battle ...

... And if they lose, they will never see home again.

Love this series, but the last three book are a little had to get thru. There is just to much self indulgence. (Not sure if it's the right word.) There is more female leads in these books but their is also more self pity than actual story going on. I am not sure if its because its female characters or if the author was trying to expand the book with more content, but it brings the series down for me......

I should have stopped with the original series. Author is very repetitive, this is a trait of the author as he does this with all his books. The amount of times people talk about how their career, or someones competence(then understanding why) is amazing.
With all the mentions of Stella star, when is she going to be put in the story! it would be awesome if she was actually part of the military or was part of the propaganda department. While I like hearing about her its about time they do something with her.

A problem with the repetitiveness is that it makes reader wonder,"what are they doing to fix it?" "then why are you doing this?". They complain about people getting ahead with connections and yet the take advantage of their own, they complain about rebellious officers then reward them, they complain about the failures of others while fostering a culture that makes them think their career will die if they speak up. Not one characters seems to be doing anything to change anything. Would love to see a book about a ship who throws out the "space navy" nonsense and revamps system. There is a stand alone book about prisoners and merchant vessels defending earth, but something tells me they will still talk about "middy country"; convicts and merchant talking about "middy country" it gets silly.

The bright spot of the series is how it deals with aliens, the aliens are not the usual genocidal idiots, but they are, well, alien. This is the cause of the conflict is that they don't understand each other, making battles more of a mystery than about explosions. The tadpools killed alot of people by flooding planet so they could invade, not to slaughter. The Foxes and Cows are just competitive, rising to a perceived challenge. Commanders are careful about civilian causalities.

Other things people won't like is the hate for reporters, talk about killing them is constant and kind disturbing; also talk about how they ended terrorism by bombarding villages from space. This suspends disbelief, as this can be done with planes as well, its also said they cut off contact from these countries as their resources are not needed, so how could they even conduct attacks against them, or why would they care if they attacked each other? they said the did not. It sounds like a fantasy some people have that if 1st world countries were not holding back.

That being said, I would be careful about saying that just because an author writes something they belief it; this is fiction. In his other books he warns about the failure of an empire because of lack of transparency.

If you like more of the same continue the series.

Good read

I found it a little light on logic and story. But is still worth a read if you are into the series. I found the paranoia a little too much. At some point in time people find their feet and can cut out the self doubts.
However it has good parts to offset these minor items.

I get it. The press are bastards. The aristocracy have it all stitched up. And a million other things which are the same in every book but which for some reason need to be rehashed and reiterated again and again.

Maybe it’s word padding.

It’s my fault for reading them really

Pulp fiction. Entirely predictable.

There are a lot of different series that fall into the Military Sci-fi category, with a selection of Main Characters that generally make up the command crew of the ship as the battle against an enemy, that enemy is usually of a greater strength than the human forces so that there is a depth of drama to the story. Nuttall’s story however goes beyond that, there is a maturity to his writing that is far beyond most of the stories out there, both in the characters and the storylines.
His characters are exceptionally well crafted, with detailed back stories, bringing them to life not just in this book, but through previous stories as well. The Ark Royal series has not just told the stories of humanities exploration out into space and their entanglements with not just 1, but now 4 alien races, but it has also followed the legacy of the Fitzwilliam family, from Captain James Fitzwilliam through to him becoming Space Lord of the British forces as well as George, his Niece, and his adopted children, Percy and Penny.
George is a main character in this book again, her unfolding tale as she struggles to come to grips with her military career is fascinating, giving us the perspective of how someone from such a privileged upbringing can join the Navy and try to rise through its ranks.
There is very little of Percy who is now a Senior Army Officer, however, we do see a bit of Penny as an embed aboard Vanguard. This is also an interesting story, getting to understand another perspective from the reporters point of view. Reporters and media are often vilified in this series as the scum of the universe, no better than something you might find on the bottom of your shoe in a public toilet. However, Penny gives a unique side, as one who has come from the aristocracy in a roundabout way, but is still down-to-earth in her understanding of all things after having lived on Earth during the bombings by the Tadpoles.
We also have Susan, the Captain of the Vanguard, who has had to remove her former Captain for negligence, and through fighting with the Foxes and Cows, has nearly lost her own command as well as many others in her fleet as well. She is another brilliant character with incredible depth.
Each of the characters gives us an incredible insight into the way the future works, the thoughts that drive these people as they try to survive in a society that is not entirely different to the one that we live in now, it is only more advanced and space faring. However, as well as the political infighting that occurs between nation states now, we also have greater threats from other space faring cultures, and these are the only things that prevent humanity from turning on each other to a large degree.
Nuttall provides an exceptional look into a future that is more of a prediction of a possibility than actual Science Fiction, and he does it with such fantastic characters and outstanding dialogue that this is one of the best Mil Sci-Fi stories that is in this genre.
We Lead evolves the story of the Foxes and Cows as a combined human fleet, using new technology, drives into the heart of their territory with Vanguard at its lead. And this is where our characters are fully tested and we get to see new depths to them as they have to fight for their lives and for the survival of humanity in a last ditched effort to put an end to this war.
With each evolution of this series, Nuttall creates a better trilogy, and this is the best book in what was the best of the 3 trilogies. Make sure you read it.

This is the concluding instalment of the 3rd Ark Royal Universe trilogy which focussed on HMS Vanguard and the 2nd interstellar war. With pressure mounting at home to spend less on military especially the expense space navy and new multi national task force is put together to make on final attach on the recently discovered alliance between the 'Foxes' and the 'Cows'. The plan is to use new technology that has been developed that will permit the creation of a Tram-line for FTL jumps where none currently exists. The plan is to use this to sneak up on the Fox home world from a system with no Tram-line and catch them off guard and do sufficient damage to ensue they surrender.
This was all I've come to expect from the series exciting battle scenes unexpected daring do, the occasional surprising death, interpersonal issues and a good smattering of politics.
Can't wait for the next instalment.

The conclusion of the Vanguard arc of the Second Interstellar War within the Ark Royal universe. Author Christopher Nuttall continues to deliver engaging military SciFi with heroes and heroines for whom you willingly cheer. And some of whom you'll mourn. Victory requires sacrifice. The space and ground battles are compelling. Nuttall's ability to continually evolve both the technology and tactics of future war impress. Both sides learn and evolve. The translation of British military traditions and institutions into a spacefaring navy works. Royal Marines and allies are prominently featured in this installment. And politics always colors military strategy. This book of the trilogy is especially compelling as the pace of the protagonists' campaign accelerates into the crowded hours of combat.

Another enjoyable book to round off the trilogy, good pacing throughout and gripping enough to make you want to read for hours.

Few niggles though, mostly around stereotyping - the upper class, racism, sexism, that connections mean more than ability, political issues. They all seem to be overblown and exaggerated in this series of books. Given the progress made in the last 3 decades alone, I don't think that the issues noted above would exist in the way they are portrayed in the book 300 years hence. There's also the ever-present awful formatting, with sentence spacing jarring into paragraph sized gaps.

This is a large step above what we've seen in the last 2 books, I can't exactly put my finger on why, but it is. The writing feels better, the plot feels better, and the characters are better.

Spoilers from here on.

The only big issue I had was when vanguard was crippled and had to be left behind. They came under attack by 2 enemy battleships and all seemed lost. Which would have been fine. But the fleet magically appears to save her, and I feel like we were robbed of a good genuine end to her story, and while they did try to explain how the fleet was able to double back and save vanguard, it just feels cheap.

Great ending

Christopher gave us a great book to end this series of books. I have one issue, we saw young George get command of a enemy spaceship, her small crew carried out their task well. Leading the attack on the home world of the Fox's. But to see her lose her life with marines on the ground, and not in space. She was always going to be fighting for recognise of her own life. But to be buried as a war hero, I am sure she never expected that.

Vanguard is a great trilogy

The Foxes and the Cows are a ferocious enemy. The battles are just as intense as the First Interstellar War. As in all major wars advances in technology are accelerated on both sides. What is more pronounced is the psychology of the enemy is a major factor that must be overcome if they are ever to be defeated. I was so absorbed in the story I had trouble putting it down. I really enjoyed this trilogy.

They killed George, the B@$tards!

Number 9 does a good job of tying it all up, but come on, Chris, did you have to kill George off!? Overall pretty god fit to the series, but the ending left me little unsatisfied.

Good read

Not my favorite in the series. A bit too much personal reflection and old resentments between English societal classes. As an aside, all the wording in italics disrupted the flow of reading.

Excellent

One of nuttalls best of his series, very compact strategy and tactics focused with good characterizations coming to fruition whom he has built on over the previous 8 books in this specific series

A bit of a return to form. There is more innovation but what gives? The most interesting of the snowflakes was built up over three volumes and met a meaningless death. Blown to atoms at the close of battle. I suspect there is room for a return but coming back from this is a tricky one. Ah well.

Brilliant

I gave the ark royal a5star because it kept you wandering what was going to happen next. It's a shame that it's concluded, I am awaiting the next chapter.

Another good, solid read in the military science fiction genre from Christopher Nuttall. As the book blurb states humanity finally gets an edge over the enemy…or do they? It is an experimental device and a one shot one at that, and the enemies technical superiority when it comes to missiles is still there. This is a book with fierce battles as well as sacrifices.

The book starts off with a bit of stage setting and preparations for the big offensive. As usual there are some political battles to fight as well. Once the mission takes off the action begins. Even with the initial jump without a tramline the humans have some heavy fighting to do before they are in a position to strike at the heart of their enemies.

Along the line they get a few more insights into the enemy they are facing. That includes their FTL communications. Not that the latter made a huge impact on the outcome though. It is pretty much one slug feast after another. As usual the combat scenes are well done and they are glued together with a fairly solid story as well as good characters and interaction between them during the lulls in the fighting.

One thing that I was a bit unhappy about was the fact that the enemy managed to shoot up Vanguard quite badly just in about every engagement and then she popped back with fresh repairs in time for the next battle. Reminded me a bit of Star Trek Voyager. It was constantly mentioned in the book how advanced her armor was and that it was so many times better than Ark Royal herself. Personally I would have liked Vanguard to be a bit more sturdy since she and her crew is the core of the story arc after all.

Once the dust clears it is time to count the causalities and, sadly, there are indeed some of the names we have learned to know that certainly will not be carried over to any future books in the series should Mr. Nuttall decide to write any. Personally I hope the series will continue since it has provided me with many hours of enjoyable reading so far. These books are well written with the usual good story, good characters and good battles, whether they are on the ground or in space, as we have come to expect from Mr. Nuttall.

Only sorry I finished reading so fast

Another excellent series from Mr. Nuttall. Possibly my only real issue with his writing is that some of the characters repeat themselves or previous characters almost line for line. Regardless his stories spark my imagination and leave me wanting more.

This review will be posted with each book in the Ark Royal series with separate ratings for the individual books as I found them.

Christopher Nuttal is one of my favourite authors. I enjoy his plots and characters equally and, with the exception of his fantasy novels, I read whatever I can find. And he is prolific.

Ark Royal is the first book in a great series. So far, it goes on for 9 books in three separate trilogies. The first and last trilogy are the best but the other three are worth reading. For the most part, the stories contain a number of characters that are well developed with heroic aspects as well as the fatal flaws. The reader gets to know them well. The action is fast paced and contains a healthy dose of space opera and military on-the-ground action.

You often end up with a sense of loss but with the feeling that it is all worthwhile.

My biggest complaint about this book was that it was over so quickly. There is a moderately paced beginning to set the stage, and a few afterwords to finish things off. Almost everything in between is non-stop action.

The story is broken into the separate experiences of several main characters. Some of the characters feature more strongly then others, with the most central being Capt. Onarino and 'George' Fitzwilliam. Both characters have solid backgrounds and depth to spare. Often these separate experiences over lap when the action is at its most heated this is woven together so well in this novel that its makes each experience more intense instead of redundant. A perfect example of the whole being greater than the sums of its parts.

Foxes and cows oh my. Favorite characters from the previous books continue, and the plot is well developed, minor losses of continuity somewhat like a jump cut but over all a great yarn that will be difficult to put down.

Another enjoyably readable book from the Ark Royal universe. Would be interested to see a book on Captain Onarina's exploits on the survey ship.
