I wrote this novel afterr the book 'Kottaipurathu Veedu'. I got an opportunity to write in Anandha Vikatan again and I wanted to try a different background this time.
That is when I came up with this idea of writing historical+social series. This book gave me different experience and I do not want to write some imaginary historical story. That is when I found 'Pulithevar' who is a freedom fighter.
I am sure readers will enjoy this different combination of History+Social background.

தற்பொழுது தொலைக்காட்சியில் ஒளிபரப்பாகும் மர்ம தேசம் தொடரை பார்த்தபொழுது தான் இந்திரா சௌந்தரராஜன் புத்தகங்களை படித்து பலநாட்கள் ஆகின்றதே என்ற நினைப்பு வந்தது. நண்பன் தாஸ் முன்பு எப்பொழுதோ பரிந்துரைத்தபடி சென்னை புத்தக கண்காட்சியில் வாங்கிய "ஐந்து வழி மூன்று வாசல்" நினைவில் வர அதை வாசிப்பது என்ற முடிவுக்கு வந்தேன்.
ஒய்வு பெற்ற ப்ரொபஸர் ராமநாதன் குற்றாலம் மலைப் பகுதியில் ஒரு பழைய வீட்டை வாங்குகிறார். கெட்ட சக்திகள் உலவுகிறது என்று அவ்வூர் மக்கள் வீட்டை பற்றி எச்சரித்த பிறகும் பிடிவாதக்காரர் ஆன அவர் அதை வாங்குகிறார். தன மகள் ஜெயந்தியுடன் வீட்டில் வசிப்பதற்கான வேலைகள் பார்க்கின்ற பொழுது ஒரு பழங்கால தாழி ஒன்று கிடைக்கின்றது. அதனுள் மூலிகைகளால் பாதுகாக்கபட்டிருக்கும் ஒரு மனிதனின் சடலம். யார் தடுத்தும் அதை பற்றி தெரிந்து கொள்ள முற்படுகிறார், அங்கு பொக்கிஷம் உள்ளதாகவும் அதை தான் கண்டறிவேன் என்றும் அவர் முற்படுகிறார். பல அசம்பாவிதங்கள் நடுவில் ராமநாதன் காணாமல் போக; அவர் இறந்து விட்டதாக முடிவு செய்கிறார்கள். அவரின் பழைய மாணவனும் காட்டு இலாக்கா அதிகாரியுமான கலாதரன் இந்த மர்ம முடிச்சை அவிழ்க்க முற்படுதே முக்கிய கதை களம்.
இதே பகுதியில் பல வருடங்கள் முன்பு அதாவது புலித்தேவர் ஆட்சி செய்த காலத்தில் நடந்த ஒரு கதையும் 'இன்று - அன்று' என்ற தலைப்பில் புத்தகம் முழுக்க இரண்டாம் கதையாக ஓடிக்கொண்டு இருக்கின்றது. இரண்டுக்கும் உள்ள பந்தமும் இப்புத்தகத்தில் வாயிலாக நமக்கு தெரிய வருகின்றது. அதில் காதல், வீரம், ஆங்கிலேயர்களை எதிர்த்து போராட்டம் என்று பல நிகழ்வுகள் கடந்து செல்கிறது.
முன்பு சொன்னது போல இரண்டு காலகட்டத்தில் கதை நகர்கின்றது. இதை அழகாகவும் மிக நேர்த்தியாகவும் எழுத்தாளர் கையாண்டிருக்கிறார். கதையின் வேகத்திற்கு எங்கும் தடை போடாத வண்ணம் இரண்டும் சமமாக நகர்கிறது. பழைய காலகட்டத்தில் வரும் காதல் இன்றய கால்கட்டதுடன் அழகாக இணைக்கப்படுகிறது. பிரிவோம் சந்திப்போம் என்பது போல்.ஒவ்வொரு பாத்திரமும் நன்றாக வரையப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. வரலாறு,ஆன்மீகம், காதல், மர்மம் என்று எல்லாத்தையும் சரிசமமாக கையாண்டிருக்கிறார். புலித்தேவர் என்றுமே என்னை வியப்படைய வைத்த ஒரு மாவீரர். அவருக்கும் மாபூஸ் கானுக்கு இடையிலான யுத்தமும் அதில் அவர் கையாளும் யுக்தியும் அருமை. கதையின் முடிவை அழகாக இணைத்துள்ளார் இந்திரா சௌந்தர்ராஜன். ஒரு காலகட்டத்தின் துயரமான முடிவு இன்னொரு காலகட்டத்தின் நன்மையாக முடியுது.
நன்மைக்கும் அன்புக்கும் என்றும் அழிவு இல்லை என்ற ஒரு கருத்தை ஆணித்தரமாக நிலைநாட்டுகிறார் "ஐந்து வழி மூன்று வாசல்" வாயிலாக. வரலாறு, காதல், மர்மம் என்று பல கோணத்திலுள்ள கதைக்களங்களை விருப்பப்படுபவர்கள் கட்டாயம் ரசிக்கும் விதமான ஒரு கதை.

I picked up this book on hearing the news of Mr.Indira Soundarrajan's passing. His speciality are books that play at the intersection of rational and mysticism and there would always be a fan following for the generations that were trying to make sense of the stories.
This book runs in two timelines. One is a love story from the times of Pulithevar, the Tamil small kingdom in the hilly region that stood up to the British against taxes. The second is happening in the present where a archeologist finds a clue to a possible treasure hidden in the region. Alternating between the two timeliness the author builds a story that will eventually intersect.
Reading this book today, you realise this book may not be celebrated generations from now. Damsels in distress, crass descriptions, cheap thrills make for a book that can be dubbed cringe. However, it is reality that this was the from a different time where this was entertainment.
There was nothing to like or dislike in the story. I loved the audio cd format of the book performed by Bombay Kannan and team.

Wonderful adventurous journey of treasure hunt by a historian along with history narrated back and forth on the different timelines of present and era of early stages of the India's struggle for independence.
