Snake Eyes
By: John Conroe
Narrated by: James Patrick Cronin
Snake Eyes takes us to Vegas and Yellowstone. We watch as the twins are born, Chris battles a werewolf/demon hybrid, and return an elemental to Yellowstone before he gets angry and blows the volcano. Lots of action and side issues going on of course. Omega, Declan's 'child' is really growing! So much is in this one!
Narration is wonderful, as usual! Can't thank you enough for being wonderful at this job!

This series is fast paced pulp UF. The world-building is a bit simplistic and the plot and story are full of tropes and flaws but none of them really hurt the series all that much as the characters are a likeable bunch who are easy enough to root for and the story itself is engaging and fun. It all has the feel of a fun action B-movie and generally tends to hold my attention from start to finish.

This 11th instalment of the Demon Accords series was one of the weaker books in the series. Chris, Tanya, Declan, Stacia and the rest of the team were hunting the rogue death witch and her demonic werewolf offspring to Vegas while also investigating a vampire who assassinated the president!

I’m not really sure why this one ended up being a little duller than normal but that was the way it worked out. The good news is this book wrapped the main story arcs so hopefully we get a return to form in the next book.

All in all this was OK but definitely one of the weakest books in the series.

Rating: 3 Stars.

James Patrick Cronin did OK with the audio. His general accents and narration are decent but his foreign accents are the absolute worst.

Rating 5.0 stars (series)

Re-listened for the third time this year October 2019.

Re-listened May 2019. I forgot to write about the joke that Chris told in this story in my initial review. I am not sure how it came across if read, but it was pretty funny the way the narrator told it. First you need to think about a Scottish brogue accent. Here's the joke.

A man from Scotland was visiting America and went to a baseball game. He saw that the batter would get a hit and run to first and the crowd would cheer. The next time the batter got a hit and ran to first base, he cheered along with the crowd. Then a batter got ball 4 and started walking to first base. The Scotsman yelled at out " What are you doing, run!" until one of his friends told him he didn't need to run because he got 4 balls. So the Scotsman took a minute and then said "Walk with pride". Again, it's probably funnier with the accent. Initial review below:

I think I like the stories better when Declan and Chris are not together. There seems to be too many people to talk about when they are together, and they are insanely powerful when they are together. I got tired of Chris calling Declan "the kid". I don't mind when Stacia worries about Declan and what he can do, but having the whole group do it is kind of annoying. Not to mention it wasn't long ago everyone was worried about what Chris could do. I am looking forward to focusing on each character individually in the next book, because I still love both of them.

Still hard to put down
pretty good.
I'm struck by the complete hypocrisy of Christian and Tanya being suspicious of someone just because that someone has more power than them. Now you know how the humans feel around you, but that is never mentioned once.
--- Re-read 4 years later ---
Yeah, the aggravation of John Conroe pulling the same irrational argument from the beginning of the series all over again is distracting from the story, and makes me think less of him and his writing ability.
Earlier in the series the villains use a lame straw-man argument that anyone "capable" of doing harm must be treated as a threat. It's so flimsy and obviously self serving that it underscored how stupid and corrupt those villains were.
...But Now, we have Christian and Tanya making exactly the same arguments about Declan that General Creek made about them. It's a repetition that make Chris & Tanya seem ignorant & disloyal, it also makes John Conroe look like he couldn't come up with a new idea or have the good sense to not reuse the same old gimmick all over again, but this time by a supposed friend.

After one of the usual Christmas viruses put me out of action for New Years, this was the perfect pick me up for the morning and a great way to start 2017.

Picking up where the last book left off, Chris, Declan and co are on the hunt for the demon/witch/werewolf hybrid. Throw into the mix a potential public relations nightmare as they investigate a vampire crime that could cause a lot of problems for the supernatural community, and the stakes have never been higher. But that's not all. Tanya's pregnancy, the world continuing to see the effects of the first quantum AI, and the continued difficulties of being the God Hammer in a world where everyone is now aware of the supernatural, all contribute to a cram packed novel and keeps the pages turning at speed.

As ever, this is a series that doesn't shy away from shaking up the formula and this happens again in this novel. We're thrown some new curveballs, the world continues to change, and the author continues to take risks to keep this series fresh. This is a risky formula, but it is one of the many reasons why this is a series that I can read over and over. It's always giving me something new.

One of the biggest successes of this novel was the set-up for the next novel in this series. In a classic Marvel Cinematic Universe move, a portion of this book was set aside to teasing the next novel and it has me seriously licking my lips for what's coming. I can't wait.

As much as I loved this novel, there were a few niggles that got me for this outing:

1 - It's told from Chris' viewpoint but I felt like Mr Conroe wanted to focus more on Declan. That's fine by me, I love Declan as a character and his story interests me. The only thing was that being as this was all told from Chris' point of view, it felt a little jarring at times and it almost felt as though Mr Conroe didn't know whose story he wanted to tell. The book flowed better whenever Declan wasn't in the picture and Chris was given the chance to shine. I would have preferred a similar writing style to what we got in God Hammer where they got a chapter each and could concentrate on their own stories.

2 - The Snake Eyes story was a bit anti-climactic. Don't get me wrong, the battles are awesome and the story is interesting, but like with the Chris/Declan dilemma, I felt that Mr Conroe was writing one story where he really wanted to be writing another.

3 - The set-up for the next story. I know, I said I loved this earlier, and I really did. But I think that at times it felt like this book was more about teasing you with what's coming than concentrating on the story it's telling.

4 - At one point in this novel, the absence of Chris' grandfather is really noted. I can't go into too much detail without spoilers, but at the end of the novel especially I was expecting to hear from him.

All of these issues are really small ones, niggles and nothing more. I left this book more in love with this series than ever and dying to read the next adventures of Chris, Declan, Tanya, Stacia, 'Sos, Lydia, Nika, Arkady and anyone else I have missed. Mr Conroe has more than proved that these enjoyable stories aren't a fluke. Eleven novels in and barely a misstep.

A 4.5-star novel that I am more than happy to round up to five.

Vegas baby!

This book takes place not long after "Rogues". The witch and her demon were hybrid have taken their act to Vegas. Omega lets the group know and off they go.
Vegas is ruled by two covens of vampires and they're behaving badly when Chris, Tanya and the gang show up.
There's a showdown with the Maine witch and her pup. And of course they were up to no good.
Demon, witch, vampires, zombies and something quite bigger are on the menu and Tanya's twins are about ready to pop.

It's one of the wonders of the modern age, how an author can skip right by the publishing industry, do it all himself and manage to attract a devoted, even fanatical readership. John Conroe is writing an excellent series and I have loved it from the first book.

Spoiler alert!

This book has a few weaknesses: some of the dialogue is clunky. The main adversary, the demon referred to as "Snake Eyes," introduced in the previous book, is disposed of fairly early on. Though the book is written from Chris' point of view, it seems that Declan, more often than not, is the one carrying the plot. I think that the book might have been better if he were the main character, or if Chris and Declan shared chapters as in God Hammer. Lastly, in the previous book, told mostly from Stacia's point of view, Declan was regarded by her as a figure of enormous power and respect, which he certainly deserved. Here, Stacia is aggressively jealous and borderline abusive. Declan, obviously besotted with her, allows her to get away with it, but it's jarring and sometimes unpleasant.

Nevertheless, these are quibbles. Another excellent entry in what has become one of my favorite series. Conroe writes fast. It's only been a few months since Rogues came out and we already have Snake Eyes. I hope we get the next one as quickly.

Another good installment

It was nice to have Chris and Tanya back front and center. However I would have been a little happier if the book head Focus just on them but Delcan also got a lot of time in this one as well. Honestly though I think the author is going to have to do something with Chris as he's starting to look a little bland compared too Delcan, I mean he's supposed to be God's hammer but every time he gets a chance to shine he's outdone by the Wonderboy witch. I think Mr. Conroe either needs to decide to marginalize Chris (a terrible idea IMO) because he seems to be sick of him or bring back his status as biggest badass on the block in a meaningful way, I mean really one guy has to be the biggest baddest dude on the block and that's always been Chris (my favorite BTW) it seems not so much now and he's really not good for much else he certainly not the brains of the operation. It's also time for Chris and Grim to assimilate fully into the same personality. Otherwise it was a great book writing was excellent as usual, editing mistakes were almost non-existent and this continues to be one of my absolute favorite series.

I still liked it

Obviously, you shouldn't start here.

I liked the plot. Everything moved forward. New troubles arose and were dealt with or planned for, etc.

My problem is the arc. As in there isn't one. There isn't an issue at the beginning that all comes together at the end. It is more straight line than arc. Everything happens in order. And in my opinion, that makes it a bad novel.

I still enjoyed it. There were developments that hint at things to come. I love the world and the characters.

But there was no development. The previous book was outstanding. This one suffers greatly by comparison. It's very uncomplicated. It's too easy.

I am definitely looking forward to more novels in this series. But I cannot rate this highly. It merely moves the plot forward.

Very early on in the book President Garth is assassinated. He will not be missed. I did find it odd that the man was supposed to be from Utah. There aren’t a lot of liberal politicians from the beehive state. The new president wants a better relationship with Chris and Tanya. Smart man. Now let’s hope he means it.

Tanya got to let her power be felt without even being in the room during one of the altercations. Chilly Tanya needs to come out more often. We know she is a natural leader. It has been a while since she got to show other Darkkin why she has earned her position.

The only real peeve with this book is that Arkady claims he had been faking most of his accent to screw with Deckan, and earlier Chris, although nothing of the sort was ever mentioned before or since. Lazy writing.

Snake Eyes --- We all Win!

Alright! Nice ending to Rogues in this storyline. The Death Witch, well, de... Oops! Spoilers, I have got to learn to rein it in a bit.
So, in case you haven't figured it out by now, I am just loving John Conroes writing in these Demon Accords stories, I have all the books in print media and now in electronic media.
I would urge everyone to support their favorite authors by buying their books and recommending them to friends and family.

Thank all you writers out there everywhere for having the imagination and determination to share your stories with us !

This is a good book, but does suffer various flaws. I didn't feel that the adversary was much of a problem overall. More of an annoyance they had to deal with. It seems that Conroe is having trouble keeping Chris the main character and focus of his books anymore. While I love Declan it made it a bit clunky to have him pull so much of the focus away from Chris. I really started wondering why Chris was the focus of the book. Overall though, Conroe still knows how to write and pulled this book off, just not as well as he had in the past.

Once again the team of supernatural beings, used to keeping their identities a secret for most of their lives, give up all information at first provocation or a chance to get into a di** measuring contest with the government. Especially Declan seems to jump at any chance he gets to behave like a jerk or show off and expose his connections and trump cards. Really makes one wonder why the government planned to plant a spy around him, if everything it takes to get information - all information - is just a nice chat over coffee. Also makes you wonder why the supercomputer informs him about anything instead of treating him like a 3 year old.
What everyone seems to be concerned about instead is Declans morals and mental stability. Like he isn’t one of the most restrained and trustworthy (in regards to morals) guys in the whole story. Chris with his Grim is much closer to a mental patient than him, which is why I find the constant worrying and observing hypocritical. Especially Nika just sharing his thoughts and traumatic past is a major offense of trust and friendship. It riuns Chris and Tanyas characters to some degrees.
Chris, the overprotective angel of death, apparently decided, that bringing his highly pregnant wife on a demon hunt is a good idea. A demon that causes her to go into labor and enables the demon to escape… two times.
The questionable decisions surrounding the twins birth aside, I found the family moments quite adorable, especially the moments with Galina stayed in my mind. Chris got some good badass moments as he kills his way through vampire politics, reminding of simpler times. Even the politics take a turn to the better as, low and behold, America gets an actually competent president. And in instances, in which our team does get antagonized, they don’t bend over but finally shoot back. Omega continues to fascinate and even Senca got an interesting appearance towards the end. All in all, despite logic flaws and inconsistencies I had fun reading this.

Another save the world adventure for Chris and Tanya

It is always fun and exciting to visit the world where Chris Gordon lives. The series continues to be engaging and the storylines fresh. This book focuses mostly on Chris and Tanya. This is the 11th book in the urban fantasy Demon Accord series. I love that Chris’ character, despite being a fallen Angel and having overwhelming powers, is still sweet, a bit naive, modest, and awkward man which makes him a very likeable hero. Chris and Tanya (along with Declan, Stacia and the others) are hunting down the death magic witch and her demon spawn who were introduced in Rogues. The team is dealing with that plus Omega, the first quantum computer, and the fact that Tanya is pregnant with twins. Many of the characters from the other books are in this book as well. There are also a few new characters who are introduced. The story includes what you’d expect from this genre - fighting, dangerous situations, end of the world scenarios, paranormal creatures, evil masterminds, henchmen, loyal friends and family, tragic back stories, mystical coincidences, snark, and laughs. I will definitely keep reading the series to see what evil beings and plans are thwarted by Chris, Tanya, Declan, Stacia and the rest of the crew.

Love these books. All of them.

This whole series is amazing. To me, speaking in broad terms, Christianity and all of the other organized religions of the world fall into the same category as subjects like Greek and Norse mythology. Because of that at early stages of the series I feared it would step too heavily into belief in the capital "G" God. At times I thought maybe it had started to. After all, I can't count the number of times I've compared Christian beliefs to older mythologies and had modern Christians become instantly offended, as if they aren't aware that most of what we call mythology now was the religion of its time, so if the focus here is so obviously from a root of Christian belief can I really count on the series not to wind up being exclusively of that belief? But then concepts of witchcraft and energy manipulation came into play. Then the realm of fairies and The Wild Hunt. And now they are even exploring bringing in other pantheons of mythology the world over. I am extremely excited to continue reading and see where this all goes. I could not recommend it more!

"Steclan" - Awesome. Two awesome power couples. Chris & Tanya and Declan and Stacia. Fallen Angels, Vampires Werewolves, Witches, Demons and apparently any combination of said supernaturals! Quantum super computer genius AI and some pretty awesome twin God Hammer/Queen Vampire/Fallen Angel babies! It's like Mr. Conroe wrote this series for me! It's got everything I love in it. This was a fantastic installment to in the series really shows how these characters have evolved over the course of the story.

As the series first started I was very happy with Chris being the main point of view, but later on when Declan is introduced I instantly liked him-- but I still liked the Hammer of God (Chris) better-- but I must say at this point in the series Declan is my favorite character- he is one bad ass Witch/Warlock. I'm looking forward to the next book, Winterfall and seeing how powerful Declan becomes on Faerie.

We have the whole team back again!  Well, I still feel like there wasn't enough Awasos, but we have a little of everyone.  Again, Declan plays a big part in the story, but the book is from Chris' point of view, which is back to the basics, and a good turn.  This one takes place in Las Vegas, mostly, and face them with an enemy that makes things hard for them.  The fact that Tanya is pregnant only makes things more dangerous and interesting.
We get to see just how awesome Declan is, and how scary Omega can be, but at the same time, they are all extremely dangerous and scary.  And just when things seem to  improve for them,  things get a new twist and we see that the most dangerous thing in the world are not the supernaturals, but people's greed.
I feel like we are heading in a new direction, something new is just around the corner, with the team consolidating, the new couple getting stronger and the new additions in the family, well, I expect great things.

amazing urban fantasy!!!

I read tons of Urban Fantasy, and one of my favorite elements is how the author decides on the interaction of modern people and technology with the supernatural. This series brings the relationship of supernaturals and modern tech to a whole new level! How deep the story goes with science, government, and real human emotions and interaction with the supernatural world. By far, John Conroe relates the most realistic approach of any author I've read! And, the plot lines are so superb, I can't put this book down! Amazingly real characters, nonstop unpredictable plot twists, emotional growth, superbly written dialogue, and a fallible MC you want to route for! In fact, the only negative of this series is how it has effected my sleep! I;m up all night reading these nonstop pager turners! Thank you John, you master word-smith!

Demon werewolf & death witch vs our favorite team

Chris narrates us through a wild chase as a death with and an alpha werewolf attempt, & nearly succeed, in a possibly civilization ending attack. Extinction level events are what our heroic team live for, they struggle to finish this one as the wily witch disappears. Stacia and Declan are at the forefront of the search and mission for the start of the story.
A trip to Vegas leaves a ton of lucky people and a huge loss for the casinos, especially the one run by vampires.
Finally, the twins are born and too adorable for all!
Oh, Stacia, Declan, and some friends are heading off world to Faerie, another planet in this universe to keep a friend of his company and safe.

I am hooked on the stories of Chris and Tanya, Declan and his wolfie girlfriend, and the whole darned universe that Conroe has created... I won't give anything away about this latest in the series except that I consumed it too quickly and now that I am awaiting the next installment already, I will probably go back and reread all of the series from the beginning again (in between all the other books I am reading). In other words, I love this series SO MUCH that I will reread it even while reading new material from other authors. :-) If you like wizards, angels, vampires, werewolves, fairies, golems, and a host of demons - with some quantum physics thrown in - you will love this series.

Book 11 and I'm still reading. I still enjoy the books quite a bit although some of the interactions are a little off, but perhaps they are setups for later books. Not much point in writing a detailed review. I highly recommending trying the series from the beginning if you like supernatural fantasy with a main character who is called the "Hammer of God" with a supporting cast of interesting individuals of the magical/vampiric/werewolf etc type with a feel good vibe to the characters and the books. If you are reading #11, you don't need my advice.

3.5 - females always jealous of anything that the men do. Another lady looks at one of the characters, the men have to back off as things get super tense for their partner?

Always little reminders that the women are goddesses and males are super sexy. Crossing legs has to include a comment about supple thighs. Mundane things turned sexual just to remind you that MC is hot.

It's like reading an Instagramers feed of their trip to Vegas at times.
If the characters could get over themselves you could find an interesting story beneath it all

It is amazing how John Conroe keeps his readers engaged with the stories of his supernaturals interacting with the world, while at the same time, revealing their very human traits. In doing this, and writing these novels in real time, he offers social and political commentary that establishes valid questions about the world we live in, and perhaps a prophetic voice. There is even an allusion to Anne Rands' Atlas Shrugged, towards the end of the novel, when Chris, "God's Hammer," and Tanya, the "Night Angel," accuse Congress of attempting to nationalize private property. I love it!

Fantastic fantasy

The Demon Accords is a great series, and Snake Eyes delivers everything you could want from your contemporary fantasy, even with a little sci-fi thrown in for good measure! An excellent continuation of the series that grows the main characters and the supporting cast, while finishing one story arc and beginning a whole new set of them. Great stuff, more please 🙏

Chris and Tanya are back in book 11 of the Demon Accords joined by Stacia, Declan and the rest of the team. The team ends up in Vegas tracking the hybrid demon werewolf and the death witch. The need to stop them before they end the world is a high priority as Chris and Tanya prepare for the birth of their twins.

This is one of my most favorite series! It has all the favorites; vampires, werewolves, witches, warlocks, magic and more. Well written with developed characters makes for an easy read. This story left many possibilities open for exploration, and I can’t wait to see where the next books take us!
