About the author

Col Buchanan is an Irish writer who was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, in 1973. From an early age he turned to reading and writing fantastical works to escape his troubles. In school he was the quiet dreamer who always sought out the back of the classroom. Later, in his stretches of work as a copywriter, he would be the quiet dreamer who always sought out the back of the office.

Having strayed from the beaten track for most of his life, at various times Col has found himself in retreat in the mountains of Mourne, homeless in Belfast, lost in a Zen monastery, and scratching graffiti as a guest of the local constabulary … all of which he mentions, (since he's the one writing this), to sound more exciting than he really is.

In recent years he has mostly settled down, and loves nothing more than a late-night gathering around a fire with good friends.

I'm...confused. Why did this series end here? If the plan is to expand the story given the new character dropped in, and what it means for the world Buchanan has built, then I'm all for it. But otherwise...this isn't an ending. So few characters have a full arc. The broader story isn't complete, either. And I don't know why. So...meh.

Een geforceerd einde

Met het vierde boek Fierce Gods komt de trilogie van Col Buchanan een einde. Net als het vorige boek zijn er veel vragen over bepaalde richtingen die het boek inslaat.

In dit boek krijgen we net als in The Black Dream nieuwe personages die niet zo een grote bijdragen leveren aan het verhaal. Net als in de voorbije 3 boeken speelt het verhaal zich af in Bar-Khos. De stad die nog steeds in oorlog is met Mann. De nieuwe personages en de plotlijnen zijn in mijn ogen toegevoegd om een volwaardig boek vol te kunnen schrijven om een einde te geven aan deze “trilogie”.

Bovendien zijn er na het lezen nog steeds veel vragen. Van bepaalde karakters weet je niet wat er met ze is gebeurd. Op het einde voel je dat Col Buchanan toch voorzichtig hint naar een nieuw boek. Of hier vraag naar zal zijn is een ander verhaal.

Het einde van het boek vond ik niet goed. Gaandeweg stelde ik me al vragen over hoe het verhaal zou eindigen in slechts 70 pagina’s. Er stond nog zoveel te gebeuren. Het einde voelt dan ook aan als de meest eenvoudige oplossing.

Bij het terugdenken aan het boek wil ik het einde goed vinden, maar het is gewoon echt geen goede keuze. Het slaat nergens op dat dit ervoor kan zorgen dat deze oorlog zou stoppen. Bovendien was het toevoegen van “aliens” ook een bizar element om deze conclusie vorm te geven.

Over het algemeen heb je weer een sterk boek, het is spannend, de karakters zijn goed geschreven en je zit als lezer midden in de oorlog. Alleen jammer dat de schrijver het einde zo snel wou laten gaan.

Als je de gehele reeks bekijkt creëert Col Buchanan een mooie wereld en personages die zeer aangenaam zijn en waar je mee meeleeft. De reeks bevat ook vele twists waardoor je steeds verder wil lezen. Jammer genoeg daalt de kwaliteit vanaf boek drie, wat er vermoedelijk voor zorgt dat deze boeken ook niet vertaald werden naar het Nederlands.
