The fun never ends in Winterfield, and by fun, we mean murder.
When a Voodoo priest passing through Winterfield turns up dead, his queen shows up looking for answers. She'll turn the town upside down if the murder isn't solved so she can get back to New Orleans in time for Mardi Gras. She'll also make the curse she put on Ben and Belladonna's relationship permanent.
The Nightshade coven has met their match as they try to solve the crime and help the hexed lovers stop hating each other in time for their big day.
Sara Bourgeois is a Midwesterner through and through. She spends her time writing, reading, herding cats, and standing in her driveway during tornado warnings. (You can't see them from the basement.)
I just have to say that borrowing the common, if somewhat incorrect, name of a real religion for a work of fiction, and pretty much showing it in a negative light is in extremely poor taste at best. Had the author used the name of one of the Big Three Religions, I'm sure she would be hung in effigy. But apparently it's ok to do that to a minority religion. Let's at least be a little more clear that these are rogues, not representative of the whole religion. Assuming someone else's religion is evil because tv and movies and other books or your minister have portrayed it in that way when you have few facts is called prejudice. In this case institutionalized prejudice, since the author is repeating what "everyone knows" from unreliable sources about how strange and evil this religion is. This is no different than spreading racism. This religion is no more strange nor evil than any other. It has good people and bad people in it. The author makes little effort to make this clear.
This series has gotten weaker and weaker. This is the last straw for me. I'm done.
Interesting and I must say that I liked the book. It did give us a break from the dark witches and get to know some of the other characters in the town.
A restored Cadillac pulled up at the diner and a tall man got out of it. His cane touched the ground and a drenching rain fell – but not a drop touched his hat or clothing. His waitress, Linda, came over, saw a skull painted on his face, set down a menu and walked away as fast as she could! When he placed his order, he deliberately asked for things that were not offered – but she asked the cook to do it anyway just to get him gone without an argument!
Belladonna opened her beauty salon to start the day. She found a voodoo doll in her apron pocket to check out later. When lunch came, she heard a thunderstorm come up and decided to instead go to the bakery for a sandwich. The air smelled odd. And the bakery had made New Orleans specialties for the first time? Very odd?
Ben, Chief of Police, saw the Cadillac drive away and followed to the cemetery. He saw the man in black dig up a grave, but when he tried to approach, his feet were frozen to the spot! His radio static broke the spell, but he had a dispatch to Joe’s garage. But Joe was not being robbed – instead, he was sick and dizzy as the man in black had danced around his relative’s grave. What was going on? Why was the town being attacked?
This is a wonderful series, very enjoyable to read. I definitely recommend it! The characters are quirky and loveable, but family and community is strong among them. This series will certainly hook you (in the best of ways)!
I always enjoy a trip to Winterfield. It's fun to spend time with the different entities and this time was no different. If you enjoy your mysteries with a good dose of paranormal and a dollop of humor this series is meant for you!
At the beginning of the first book I was a little put off it didn't pick up right away so I stopped reading it for a bit but then came back to it a little later. Now I'm so glad I did its a great little series, that ate a fast read and they pick up right where the last book left off. They keep you coming back for more, with great characters and good story lines.
This series started well, but has quickly gone down hill. The over arching plot line that was so prominent in book 3/4 is dropped again in this entry. I wish the author would pick a lane.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
