Everyone thinks they know the story of 1066 and the Norman invasion, but we only ever here about Harold and William. The truth is much more complicated and much of it was manipulated by the incredible women who birthed and married them. This is the story of Ealdyth of Wessex, wife of Edward the Confessor and sister to Harold. She was the only member of the Godwinson clan to survive the upheavals with her life and wealth relatively intact and that was down to her intelligence, political understanding and personal bravery and pragmatism. Her life was unpredictable, surging from incredible highs to sickening lows but she battled on. This story gives some flesh and bones to the ghostly figure left to us by history. All events are in order and all historical characters are where and when they should be. There were rumours of a romance, and I have fleshed this out with an invented love. I hope she had something similar in real life. She deserved some human comfort.
If you like historical fiction, a good story, a love of the Lord, and clean writing you'll like this story. I did rate it 4 stars because there were numerous editorial mistakes that could have been dealt with , but I liked it otherwise.
