The Kingmaker #1-3

The Kingmaker: Complete Trilogy

Rate this book
The complete Kingmaker Trilogy in one set

The Kingmaker.
Seize the Crown. Born to Rule.
“I am sixteen years old and I will die on the morning of my seventeenth birthday. As tradition dictates, I will be sacrificed and my life’s blood will determine which one of my two brothers will be King. My blood will kill one and crown one. My name is Everleigh and I am the Kingmaker.”
Terrified of her fate but resigned to her death, Everleigh has less than a week to live.
The legend of the Kingmaker goes back millions of years and Everleigh would never dare to question her deadly inheritance. Kingmakers are special; their magic chooses the rightful King of the Realm and they all die on their seventeenth birthday.
Except this one.
Saved from the inevitable, Everleigh learns that she is the Kingmaker who will live, the Kingmaker who will rule, the Kingmaker who will be Queen.
But not everyone agrees with an age-old prophecy that says that a girl will rule the Realm and soon Everleigh is locked in a deadly battle for the throne.
Can she escape her blood-thirsty enemies and live long enough to be crowned Queen?

Seize the Crown
“If I am not the Kingmaker, who am I? If I am not Queen, who am I?”
Believing her first love is dead, devastated by her brother’s actions, and cruelly denied of the crown she believes is her own, Everleigh faces the fight of her life in the second book of The Kingmaker Trilogy.
Millards’s deadly ambition sees him wear the crown that should rightfully be on her head. Everleigh is determined to avenge her loved ones and seize the crown and if a fight is what it takes to rule, she will fight or die trying, in this follow up to The Kingmaker.
Seize the Crown follows Everleigh on her quest for revenge and the throne, as she battles against her brother and his murderous tyranny.

Born to Rule
Maddeningly, the crown still eludes Everleigh as we begin the conclusion to The Kingmaker Trilogy.
In a hugely welcome turn of events, her first love is back at her side, the crown is almost on her head and she is ready to rule.
But with Millard on the run and attacks being made ‘in the name of the King’, Everleigh must put a stop to her brother before her Kingdom is in ruins and if, as Queen, she must slay her own sibling, she will gladly do it.

So glad it was free

This is by far the worst series I've read. Unfortunately I had time to kill, it was recommended on Kindle Unlimited for free, and I gave it my full attention until the last page. It was jarring from the very first chapter, but I hoped it would get better. Unbelievably poor writing, flipping from tense to tense and person to person in an attempt to express some sort of unique style. Lengthy dialogues that make you lose track of who's speaking, gaping plot holes, fickle characters. I lost count of the number of times I cringed reading this. The premise has so much potential, but completely lacks depth or meaningful character development. Considering it is set in the space of about two weeks, the number of people falling in and out of love, miraculously healing, switching sides, getting over grief and trauma is eye-rollingly basic. Everleigh had so much potential as a strong female character and was written as weak, defenceless and pathetic. These books read like they were written by a 15 year old Twilight fan with a thesaurus.

The book is mediocre at best. I initially found the plot concept to be intriguing and was excited to jump in. I expected a light fun read. Unfortunately, the book is so basic in the writing and writing style, lacks any character development, and falls short of the plot mark that I’m having a difficult time wanting to finish it. My biggest disappointed is in the female characters, most of who seem simply stupid to me. If you’re looking for a simple and very easy read, then you may enjoy it. For myself, the superficiality of the writing and characters were just not enough to keep me interested.

Totally NOT worth the read!!!! The plot was rushed during the few interesting scenes and then the rest was dragged out with pointless filler. You couldn't relate to any of the characters as their motivations were weak or unexplained, and most of them became so annoying that I wanted to skip whole chapters that were from their POV. And the fact that everyones loyalties were constantly changing, it gave me a headache trying to keep up with these bi-polar characters. The love story was unrealistic and boring, especially because the male love interest was missing for the entire second book. I didn't even fully read these books, skimming through most chapters so the whole trilogy only took me less than a day and at the end I still thought I'd wasted too much time on them! These books are filled with weak plot points and unrealistic characters that it made it a chore to read. There are definitely better books out there to read, so I wouldn't waste my time on these.

The king maker

I really enjoyed reading this book. I liked the writing. It felt as if I was getting to know the characters as they told me their story.

3 stars for the premise, but I just could not make my way through the book. The constant POV shifts (every chapter, including one character that is first person but not the main character), along with the MC making truly stupid decisions....and the stereotypical love at first site plus an attempted sexual assault stopped by the love interest made this unenjoyable for me.

Fraught

World building practically non existent. Character development unlikely and mostly unexplained. Emotional maturity of the characters about 12 maybe... The plot took unexpected and ridiculous leaps. The dialogue was alright for a juvenile book. The book never let me be immersed in any way. Sorry.

I lied. I DNF this book. I feel bad because the blurb was amazing... I wanted to love it, I was expecting to love it. Then I started it and quickly realized that this was not a book for me. The writing was choppy.

As a concept, I really enjoyed the idea of The Kingmaker. However, in execution, it is one series that really would have benefited from an editor, or at lease maybe some alpha and beta readers that looked at it with a more critical eye. Full disclosure, this review is more critical than those I typically like to write, but it is completely because of the potential this story has!

The storyline itself is fairly simple, but I do appreciate the attempts at plot twists. To the author’s credit, they really did catch me off guard and wondering what would happen next. I liked the fresh concept of The Kingmaker and the magic ruling the realm affecting how Kings/Queens are chosen. I’d like to see more development there into the impact for Everleigh and how her power actually affects the land/people/her own growth and strength beyond “I made the river rise.” That’s all well and good, but why should her people care about just a show of power? Are they that simple that anyone with power immediately becomes their ruler? Take that piece of the story and dive in! I think it has great building potential!

What un-did it for me is multi-faceted. First, the points of view and tense. The author switches between first and third person through the series, as is the trend right now in fiction. She does it in a predictable pattern, which I appreciate, but when you are consistently switching points of view, choose characters that engage the reader, whether likeable characters or not. More on that later. In regards to the tense- it is all written in present tense (she is looking, he is seeing, she is walking, etc). This for me was not a deal breaker, but I had a harder time getting into the story because of the tense. It just felt off (completely personal opinion on that point).
Second, character development. As the author switches view points, she cycles through different characters in each book. However, the characters she chooses to follow in first person are one dimensional at best, and quite frankly, are difficult to engage with, main characters and all. They lack development overall, with superficial motivations, in engaging dialogue, and LOTS of whining. There is a way to develop your characters and create a sense that all is lost while you build your story, and constant tears and whining are not it. I will say though, I did enjoy Ceryn’s view point more than others because out of all of the characters whose view points are followed, I thought she had the best chance at some development, however superficial. Third, the timing. The first book was stretched out over a week and lacked energy. It was all focused on the build up to the Kingmaker’s last day, and while we as the readers were anticipating action, it felt like the book was being drawn out unnecessarily to try to build the suspense, only to be concluded too quickly. I think it would be more effective and engaging to condense the three books into one story, just separated into parts, maybe? This would give the feeling of climactic moments, but allow for more smooth transitions and less time wasted trying to catch the reader up, especially from those first person characters. It may also help reduce some of the more awful inner monologue moments that seemed just like fillers and allow for better character development. Fourth, and the most simple are just simple grammatical and punctuation errors that abound throughout the book. I’m definitely not perfect in my writing, but if I were going for publication, that is something I would go over with a fine tooth comb. There are certain areas where poor grammar applies to the moment, like in Lanorie and Ceryn’s points of view, however, it should not exist in those third person chapters, as they should be free from character bias, especially in the third person omniscient aspect.

All that being said, it is a fun read, and fairly quick because of the simplicity behind it. For the most part, I enjoyed myself and did not feel like my time was wasted. Again, I loved the concept of the story, but I wish there was more substance to it.

I would avoid this. The premise could potentially be good but the actual writing and execution was...awful. The chapters are constantly changing from 1st to 3rd person, all the characters have little to no development and have incredibly childish thought processes. The story itself is so slow (probably due to the abysmal writing style) yet the author somehow makes everything happen quickly, (Archer and Kingmaker fall in love in approximately five minutes), and adds gaping nonsensical plot holes to boot. To name a few; potential rape that is never mentioned again; Archer being knocked out in the final scene for no discernable reason?; An attempted suicide that is briefly mentioned once; multiple mentions of a 'madness' that caused the King's wife to die, despite saying she died in childbirth at the very start, but never further explained.

Maybe the two sequels get better, maybe these plot holes are broached and patched up a bit. I didn't care enough to want to read them, despite them all being one big ebook.
When I realised I had started the second book (Also very vague, there isn't really an 'ending' per we,) I felt I had fulfilled my duty to give the author a change and immediately deleted.

TL;DR - interesting concept, could not have been executed any worse than it was. Reads like a 10 year olds first novel attempt.

An easy read; aimed for YA; good premise but some scenes lacking the oomf I thought they would

Some of the character conversations and thoughts are a little repetitive when reading 1-3 in one go as the character like Ginata repeats what has happened in her head in book 3. But I assume this is done as most people will read each book one at a time so it's a way to go back and get a recap. I had them as one book on Kindle so didn't have that obvious recap bit.

The premise and story of this book is good. The way it's written is more suited to a younger audience (which it is aimed for) but as an easy read for an adult it is fine.

I didn't find the characters and writing as exciting as I thought with the plot that the author had and I can't put my finger on it. Maybe I felt Everleigh needed to use her powers more? Some of the characters I didn't feel as invested in as I think the author wanted me to be for what happened to them.

Overall a decent read with an interesting plot with Everleigh as a Kingmaker.

Ceryn was a great character and she grows on you. Lanorie was a good one to read too without revealing too much of her tale.

I wanted to like it. I really did. Interesting premise of a girl born to die so she could determine the next king. Sounds amazing! My problem wasn't so much with the story as the writing style. Alternating tenses, different pov every chapter. Half the time I had to flip back to see whose pov it was supposed to be.

The entire trilogy happens in a span of about 2 weeks. Falling in and out of love, dying and coming back, caught the bad guy but lost him but caught him again. It was too much.

And the characters were underdeveloped. I expect that is because there are so many characters with individual plots that there wasn't time to really get a backstory for any of them.

Then there is the tired trope of the sheltered princess falling for the first boy her age that she sees.

The only character I truly liked was Ceryn. I understood her more than any other character and would love to see a book about her, Archer, and Weaver set before they met Everleigh.

Overall it's a good story premise ruined by mediocre writing.

I had forgotten to select a new book to read on my breaks at work, so I scrambled and grabbed this one for free from the Amazon prime library. That was a mistake. The entire book felt like it was written by a teenager. I kept finding myself asking, "Where are the adults?" What are the politics like in the "Realm" where no other nobles stepped in to even attempt to seize power during the unrest? Where were the advisors? How had a similar power struggle never happened in the generators of Kingmakers before? I couldn't suspend my disbelief. That, and the book all happened in the span of a couple weeks. I think the initial concept is fascinating and would love to see it explored by someone with more forethought and experience writing.

It was okay...but nothing special

I read the synopsis for the trilogy of the kingmaker and thought it sounded really good.....and to be honest when i started reading i started to feel a little disappointed, dont get me wrong i finished the book set, but for me they were lacking in something, maybe it was the style and language in the way they were written as i found some of it quite simply written. Maybe it was because I felt the plot didn't move as quickly as it should have, we had alot of chapters from different characters and they thought alot in their own heads which i found annoying as it didn't benefit the story in any way but more just filled extra pages! Sorry this didn't cut it for me!

DNF @ 3%

I almost gave up before Chapter 1 even began — the overtly conversational tone of Lanorie's chapter really annoyed me. Every other sentence started with "Oh," or "Hang on," or "Of course," or "Well," and as if that weren't jarring enough, these interjections also frequently show up in the middle of sentences. Then it got a little better, but I checked the table of contents and noticed that it alternates between the numbered chapters (third person limited) and POV chapters from presumably-minor characters. Which doesn't appeal to me, especially since Lanorie is apparently a recurring guest star.

The premise seemed morbidly fascinating at first, but it's been beaten to death already even though basically nothing has happened yet.

Captivating

I’m quite hard to please where books are concerned and if they don’t interest me in the first chapter I put them down and never pick them up again. Well these three books had me wanting to read them all which I did in two days oops little sleep for me. These books do switch from person to another quite quick but if like me your not bothered by it then I would highly recommend these to you great writer and look forward to reading some more and what happens in the future for them all :) thank you for the read it was a pleasure

I just can't find the right words to describe how awful this trilogy is. Inconsistent, weak writing. The author spells out everything as if she doesn't think the reader can follow the plot or pick up on subtlety. Characters and plot clichés. Ridiculously large plot holes. And literally the stupidest characters ever. I was going to leave two stars because I thought the premise was original, but it was so poorly executed I can't bring myself to do it. How are people leaving four and five star reviews?

Loved it!

While I easily loved reading this trilogy, I have one small negative. I hate reading a book that continuously repeats itself. I can understand from one book to the next, but even in the middle and towards the end, I felt like I was always reading something I had already read. It felt like the author was filling space.
As far as the story; the characters were great, the story original, the writing near perfect. I would definitely recommend the trilogy.

Excellent

I’ve been in a reading slump for about a year now although I used to get through 3 books per week. After trying a few different new books, I picked up this trilogy which has been on my kindle for a while now and I couldn’t put it down. I kept thinking about it when I wasn’t reading it and couldn’t wait to get back to it. I read the whole trilogy in a few days and il be downloading the cursed princess and reading that before any other book.

This book had a great premise but it was poorly executed. The first person writing was too casual and felt juvenile, often at odds with the gravity of the issues they were discussing. It also jumped around a lot. The characters were pretty one dimensional and not very likeable or relatable on the whole. It gets two stars because like I say the premise is a great one and when I started reading I was excited to see what happened but in the whole I was disappointed

Blah!!

The h of the story was such a weak cry baby, she never believed in herself. Every other page she was weeping, or had tears streaming down here cheeks. Always questioning herself and having others talk her into her role as queen. She never fights her battle's and is always hiding. I kept thinking maybe she will develop & become the queen she is supposed to be, mabey embrace her magic..... But nothing

So engaging!

I LOVED this trilogy and I was so invested in the book that I cried at certain parts and shouted in excitement as the characters went through different trials and tribulation. I’m thankful I bought the trilogy instead of one book at a time because I know I would have gone back to buy the next ones as soon as the previous one ended. So exciting and I will be recommending it to my middle school student s

Read them!

This is a great read for everyone, but it rings extra special with me because I can see those reluctant readers finding at least some interest and joy in this. It suits everyone with romance, friendship and family loyalty, betrayal, and just the right amount of blood and violence. The read is smooth and well paced.

I wanted to love this trilogy -- I really did. It had everything that I usually love in a book. However, amongst other things, there was a serious lack of characterization (I think several characters were too stereotypical, no surprises or growth). At some point about midway through -- I just quit caring about core characters -- and that makes it hard to like a book.

Glad 3 books in one volume

While I like the story, this book was just too long to be a great book. Scenes repeated from differing viewpoints quickly becomes annoying, so I found myself skipping pages to move forward in the story

A great idea, with some good plotting, but filled with gimmicky side plots.

Couldn't stop. I'm in love!

This book grabbed me and I could not put it down! The author did a wonderful job of switching between characters and making you love or hate each one. I've been so busy and haven't had time to enjoy a good book for a while and these made me make time. I highly recommend reading these! Cannot wait for more!

Great Storyline

I enjoyed the overall plot and character development. The first couple of chapters were a struggle to get through because it repeats a lot, but I'm glad I stuck with it! I wanted to see Everleigh use her power to end the battle. I thought for sure she would use her power to burn her brother instead of using a dagger.

Not a favorite.

This book was just not a favorite of mine. I couldn’t get past the fifth chapter. The main character just friended my gears in her flippant take on life. I could easily tell that she probably wouldn’t become a strong heroine either. Definitely not a winner in my library.

Frustrating but interesting

I am undecided as to if I enjoyed this book. The storyline was good and I can honestly say I enjoyed the basic story, however at times the writing style seemed very young to me and parts of the story irritated and annoyed me. An easy read though that doesn’t require much of your attention

Agree with the critiques of the other low reviews. At the end, I looked up to see who the publisher was, and it is self-published. Obviously needed an editor. Plot had potential, was stretched out into 3 books unnecessarily. Spoiler alert - Never really developed nature power - should have been an important part of the end and was completely absent.

This was a masterpiece for me. It was very well written and it has a little bit of everything you could want in a book. Magic, battles, and romance. This is a new fave for me. This author is wonderful. I volunteered to read this trilogy in exchange for my honest opinion
