Okay, I confess. This book… made me giggle. It may have even been a “tee-hee.” *Bows head in shame* I know this confession may be shocking, but to be fair, how often do you get to read about a martial artist attacking supernatural creatures in a Chinese restaurant?

All joking aside, this second volume continues to be an amusing diversion. While the first was more humorous in my opinion, this one certainly had its moments and the absurdity of some of the situations goes even farther (the above mentioned random martial artist in a Chinese restaurant was possibly the highlight of the book for me). Some will like that it seemed a little heavier on the action (or at least not as much time between action sequences), but I personally enjoyed the first one focusing on characters and banter more.

A few of the issues from the first book remain, for example characters are mentioned once or twice to disappear, but this suffers slightly more in my opinion as characters who were important in the first book have much the same problem in the second. I understand that the author is building up at something, but as short as these books are, they feel almost like random tangents.

That said, the comedy is consistent, the characters are still enjoyable, and from a structural standpoint, this one does a slightly better job at telling a consistent story without as many detours (though a few do come to mind…).

Still worth a read if you enjoyed the first. At this point there is at least one more book in the series coming out this year, no doubt I will give it a shot as well.

This is like the platonic ideal of a light novel, the sort of thing Haruhi Suzumiya was parodying. This is a book where a pack of werewolves attack a Chinese restaurant and the chef turns out to be a master martial artist, and you're like, "Yeah, sure, why not. It's cool."

This isn't great lit, and I could do without the little sister character, but overall, I could sit on a beach with twenty volumes of this series and be perfectly happy for a week.

The MC is coming into his power...well that's is what I like to say but it soul eyes or what ever is just an add on. His real power is fictious martial arts forced on him by big sister. Well that and his ridiculous strength. This volume is about Aiko's big brother and the end foreshadows the next volume.

I can't help thinking I'd like this series more without Mutsuko and Yoriko...but I suppose that would defeat the purpose of it. On the plus side, Aiko has really grown on me and the story maintains a nice border between "dumb" and "fun."

The second volume of this series, and another solid outing. This time we focus more on the Noro clan, Aiko and her brother mainly. Mutsuko again plays second fiddle to Yuichi, and I think you could even argue the little sister of Yuichi, Yoriko, has more play in this volume.

I thought it was pretty well paced, and for the most part again self contained, a story that has a beginning and ending in one volume. There is a bit of a tease at the end of the volume though. Action is again a major focus, and listening to this one in text to speech I realized how well presented it is, very swift, vivid movement and conversations that make you feel like you're listening to an anime.

Relationship stuff is still moving pretty slowly, and it honestly still seems to be Aiko's title as love interest unchallenged despite throwing Natsuki Takeuchi into the mix. Natsuki really plays a minor role in this one, and some of the power levels get flipped to the point you see her as extremely weak, so hopefully she does something about this in upcoming volumes or she'll feel really tacked on compared to the other 3 main cast members.

Overall, pretty pleased with these volumes. Again, it feels like Devil is a Part Timer with the ever expanding cast, but overall good focused plot development. I do hope for more relationship stuff besides characters looking away or getting interrupted, but I'm guessing they'll string the reader along there. Mutsuko could use more play as well definitely for a series named after her. She's definitely the source of the biggest laughs.
