27 distinguished essays examine the dilemma of those struggling with one of the most critical problems of our man as a stranger to himself, to his environment, and to his society.
A series of essays told by various authors, psychologists, and observers of culture in rapidly changing times. A snapshot of alienated personalities, cults, people, and trends in American Culture in the 60's. The beat generation, the Gypsies, the blacks, the hippies, the Sioux, Marilyn Munroe (as told by herself), spy's, suicide, criminals, newsmen, poverty, draft dodgers, getting old, etc... "27 essays examining the many kinds of estrangement that afflict the modern world of the sixties. A picture of a depersonalised mass society in which values are eroding and changing."
This book was published in the late 60's when society is changing due to increased freedom (for some), and the beginnings of the evolution (revolution) of American society.
Although some of the essays are deep in psychology, it is very engrossing to compare the concerns of people, predictions and ideas from 50 years ago to society as it is to day.
