You know that old saying, “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer”? Well, for Michael, it isn’t that easy.
As a recent graduate of the police academy, his life seems to be going great… until a car accident completely alters his life. When the woman he loves ends up in grave danger, things become clear. Someone is trying to hurt him, but who?
Michael has no idea who his enemies are, but he’s determined to find out.
Graduation from the Police Academy is a cadet’s happiest and proudest of days. With his best friend, Lucas, at his side, both Michael and Lucas had just become the newest recruits on the force. On his way home from the graduation ceremony, Michael tries to assist police in stopping a speeding vehicle, only to end up in a car accident which leaves him paralyzed. After months of painstaking physiotherapy, Michael is able to stand from his wheelchair and propose to the love of his life, Angel, who had stood by his side and given him strength through his long recovery. The two take a short walk in a nearby park to celebrate their engagement, only to be accosted. Michael looks on helplessly, as Angel is shot and left for dead. As Angel fights for her life in hospital, Michael hunts down the shooter, who also happens to be the man who had driven the vehicle which had almost ended Michael’s life on graduation day. With Lucas by Michael’s side, they are about to apprehend the monster behind Michael and Angel’s life-threatening attacks, but nothing can prepare Michael for the shocking truth about to be revealed, leaving Michael, once again, fighting for his life.
Dwayne T. Martin’s incredible portrayal of a psychopath, determined to destroy Michael and his happiness, is most definitely an edge-of-your-seat read filled with suspense throughout. The amount of characters in the story is kept to a minimum, leaving the story very easy to follow. The end of the story is left open, leaving the possibility for a follow-up to be released. This brings me great joy, as the shock and anger I felt while reading the pages towards the end left me wanting to see vengeance and retribution, at any cost. Michael and Angel had been through a lot together, as well as a long recovery for Michael – so much so, that he finds the strength to stand and eventually walk, against all odds. His love for Angel is so evident, deep and inspirational. When Angel was gunned down after such an arduous journey of recovery, I had to stop reading for a few moments, as the tragedy of it sunk in. Deception is definitely a book for those who love the thrill of suspense, and who are up for a rollercoaster ride of drama, action, shock and tragedy, when bloody vengeance is the only way to stop the killer from striking again.
"Deception" is a fast-paced read with lots of suspense and plot twists. It is a quick read, a novella, or short story sized read, but well worth your time and effort. The writing is well-paced leading you to want more from what promises to be a good series of short novels. Tackling issues of truth, friendship, career, expectations, and fulfillment, the themes of this work are timeless and the value of the story line brings many future story possibilities to come, all which I look forward to with great anticipation. Great job to author, Dwayne Martin!
This novelette is a great read if you enjoy books that are high in action and suspense. I was on the edge of my seat at certain points, worrying about what would happen to the characters as they made their next move!
