The Pomodoro Technique: The Acclaimed Time-Management System That Has Transformed How We Work

Rate this book
Available through bookstores for the first time, the internationally acclaimed time management system that has been used by millions, written by Francesco Cirillo, creator of the Pomodoro Technique.

Francesco Cirillo developed his famed system for improving productivity as a college student thirty years ago. Using a kitchen timer shaped like a pomodoro (Italian for tomato), Cirillo divided the time he spent working on a project into 25-minute intervals, with 5-minute breaks in between, in order to get more done, without interruptions. By grouping a number of pomodoros together, users can tackle a project of any length, and drastically improve their productivity, enhance their focus, and better achieve their goals.

Originally self-published, and shared virally online, this new publication of The Pomodoro Technique includes several new chapters on how teams can use the pomodoro method to save time and increase productivity. The process underlying Cirillo's technique includes five stages: planning the day's tasks, tracking your efforts, recording your daily activities, processing what you have done, and visualizing areas for improvement. With this tried and tested method, readers can simplify their work, find out how much time and effort a task really requires, and improve their focus so they can get more done in the same amount of time each day.

Now I want to make clear that my two star rating has nothing to do with the Pomodoro Technique itself - I think this is an interesting/common sense one that many of us already use. However, this was by far one of the most boring productivity books I've read where book in this case is, essentially, an academic paper. Except without any believable academics. Just because you cite people and have quotes doesn't necessarily make your "research" compelling and I am honestly not sure there is really enough here to warrant the bibliography. It didn't make sense to me that what is being presented as largely personal and anecdotal experience should really require citations for fluffy jnspirational quotes. I feel sharing this technique with the world would really benefit from a more personal and witty approach, instead of a colder pseudo-scientific one.

The technique itself is solid, as I said - I think it'll pair nicely with my usage of GTD but I've never been one for "concentration" and previous versions simialr to this method that I've tried before have fallen flat. We'll see!

Glossary
! Pomodoro. Kitchen timer used to measure 25-minute intervals. The name of the Technique
comes from the first timer used which was shaped like a tomato (pomodoro in Italian).
! Time-boxing. With this technique, once a series of activities has been assigned to a given
time interval, the delivery date for these activities should never change. If necessary, the
unfinished activities can be reassigned to the following time interval.
! Qualitative estimation error. This error occurs when all the activities needed to reach a
certain goal haven’t been identified.
! Quantitative estimation error. This error occurs when the estimation of a single activity
(or set of activities) is higher (overestimation) or lower (underestimation) than the actual
effort.

This technique is so simple and I have ignored many key things until reading this book:

1. The Rest is as important as the pomodoro. It is mandatory to refresh your mind for the next pomodoro.

2. If you finish the task before 25 minutes, don't work on other tasks or stop the pomodoro. The purpose to get your mind stick to the schedule 25 minutes is very important. So you can review your work, recap what you have done instead.

I'd been using the Pomodoro technique for years until it was pointed out to me that I probably wasn't. Really? Wind up a timer, work for 25 minutes, take a five minute break, repeat. What more could there be to the technique?

Quite a bit, it turns out, so I decided to go to the source and read the original description of the technique to see if there was anything I'd missed.

The technique, as described in the book, does involve a timer, but also emphasises record-keeping. It instructs you to write down your tasks and record how many pomodoros (25-minute time slots) you use for each. To be fair, the records are intended solely for your personal reflection and improvement. They're not part of an evil Tayloristic ploy to spy on employees.

I find the record-keeping part of the technique too bureaucratic. Perhaps it's because I've been using the timeboxing part of the technique for so long that I don't need the insight this ostensibly fosters.

Despite the overhead of what to me looks like red tape, I'm sympathetic to the book. It makes much sense and is evidently written based on extensive experience. If you're struggling with a lack of self-discipline, it might be useful. On the other hand, I don't feel that there's much for me to come after.

I knew this technique long time ago but I've never plunged into its details. This book/paper summarized it all in an easy to understand text with lots of real life examples/scenarios.

you can get the book from iBooks for $10 or get it for free as PDF from their website http://www.pomodorotechnique.com

The bottom-line is summarized in the following set of rules:

! The Pomodoro Is Indivisible. There are no half or quarter Pomodoros (§2.1).

It sounds like an oxymoron, but I want to write a positive two-star review.

The pomodoro technique is superb: use a timer to keep your focus for 25 uninterrupted minutes. A blogger introduced me to this concept years ago, and I've often found the use of a timer an excellent way to keep focused on a job.

I picked up the book, hoping there might be some hidden gem that would help me further. Well, no.

The idea is a five-star idea; the book is a two-star book.

Kdybych mohla zpět do minulosti, tuhle knížku bych si znovu už nekoupila.

It was a good read. Though it explains in detail the ins and outs of the Pomodoro Technique, some sections are rather tedious in the audiobook version.
I'd rather recommend you to watch Thomas Frank's videos on the Pomodoro Technique instead.

Written by the creator and chief refiner of the technqiue - Francesco Cirillo - the book breaks down the latest buzz concept in GTD: Pomodoro.

Using clear and instructive language, Cirillo does a fairly good job of treating to the theory behind the technique, explaining for example why humans do best when we work in spurts of roughly 25 minutes. I am also impressed by his continuous use of practical illustrations in showing how Pomodoro may be applied in everyday contexts - from studying to completing work related assignments.

It is a very short read (45 pages!) and should not take more than a few hours to sift through. Although, having read it, I intend to continuously reference it again and again as I now try to actually apply the method to my own work.

As an aside, I should mention that the book is available as a free PDF at http://www.pomodorotechnique.com/

The book gives insights to Pomodoro Technique, concentrating on values of simplicity (for easy life integration and sustainability) and constant progress (by recording and reflecting).
While would not completely apply the technique, I found its rules useful for practicing proper self-discipline; through those rules, the benefits are of certain, logically, with clear example.
Also there're many in-depth aspects around Pomodoro considered, for I once regarded pomodoro is just a tomato timer with 25 minutes each session, this book did well in opening my mind in how limitless could one "dig deeper" in seemingly simple term.

If one is interested in productivity-related book, and perhaps looking for method fitting him/herself, or even develop themselves their own technique(s), "The Pomodoro Technique" is the great starting point.

A friend of mine mentioned Pomodoro technique in one of his tweet. I never heard about it before so I watched the video on their website. Someone promises better organisation of your time and more efficiency? Yes please!

The book is not bad, it's very short, especially if you do not count introduction and some other unrelated pages. It is easy to read, but you get a feeling that they are repeating and over explaining simple things for the sake of length. I think that it could have been explained in much shorter terms. Later, I stumbled upon The Cheat Sheet on their website and IMHO that's all the information you need.

Well my review books pomodoro is almost out of time. Gotta go. :)

I finally read this book even after years recommended it to my clients. I really related to having difficulty managing both the internal (stuff in your head) and external (email, phone calls, etc) interruptions that come up when trying to get things done. The book is a fast read and has two sections: one on reaching individual goals and the other for reaching team goals.

One area that could use more clarification is around creating, categorizing, and updating the activity list. Book explains well how to use the activity list during the Pomodoro timer experience, but doesn't explain how to create it from scratch and effectively translate that into daily action plans

I'm not a native speaker so it took 4 Pomodoros to me to finish this book. Of course as an individual I didn't dive deep into the Team part but other parts I've read thoroughly. As for me one shouldn't perceive the Pomodoro method as an revelation. It's just small and simple yet the effective time management technique. But what is brilliant is that one doesn't need a lot of time to try it in action. One day to read, another one to apply. And it's better to give some time to grow crops before making a conclusion. Right now it's my second day with the Pomodoro Technique but I can clearly see that I became more focused on my tasks and less frustrated. The main problem that I see is my own inner level of procrastination that I tend to count as natural level for every individual and it's almost impossible to change it forever.

Pomodoro 1 - Alle begin is moeilijk

We gaan ervoor.

*Trrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr*

- Pauze -

Pomodoro 2 - Wat extra uitleg

Oké, ik zal even uitleggen wat hier net gebeurde. Mijn kookwekkertje ging af. Dus ik moest even vijf minuten pauze nemen.

*Trrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr*

- Pauze -

Pomodoro 3 - Ervaring

Goed, daar gaan we weer. Begrijp me niet verkeerd.

A nice book to dive deep into the pomodoro technique. It doesn't work for everybody, but at least worth trying.
Has some good advice we don't normally get from other pomodoro related resources.
For me this advice was to work for 25 minutes (but here I tend not to follow the original period and sometimes extend it up to 45 minutes) straight on one task preferably and never ignore breaks, which also should be specific: you have to get up from your desk and do some activity.

Z mého pohledu naprosto ideální kniha. Jasný, stručný návod, jak k technice přistupovat. A myslím, že i pokud byste samotnou techniku nechtěli posléze aplikovat, lze si z toho vzít pár užitečných rad/tipů.

The Pomodoro Technique is as simple as it is effective: Chop your work into more manageable 25-minute chunks during which you work totally uninterrupted. Afterwards, take a break to relax and recharge your batteries, so you can start your next 25 minutes of focused work without getting tired.
