Transforming ADHD: Simple, Effective Attention and Action Regulation Skills to Help You Focus and Succeed

Rate this book
Are you ready to be the person you want to be? If you have adult attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), accomplishing everyday tasks like paying bills, getting to a meeting on time, or simply buying groceries can be extremely difficult. At the end of the day, you may feel frustrated and unfocused, and life may seem unmanageable. So, how can you move past the constant forgetfulness, recurring mistakes, disorganization, distractibility, lack of focus, poor "time management," and restlessness that keep you from being your very best?Transforming ADHD offers a breakthrough, scientifically-grounded approach to attention and action regulation skills and strategies. Looking at ADHD through the latest research and the broad perspective of interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB)--a model that views one's mind, brain, body, and relationships as intimately connected--you'll discover how to work with your brain instead of against it, and transform the way you live your life.  Using the practical exercises presented, you'll learn how to effectively direct your attention and motivate yourself to action so you can move toward the life you want and help others do the same, whether as a loved one, relative, teacher or manager.  There's no need to have ADHD to gain from the skills and strategies presented.  Almost anyone who struggles with attention and action will find something of use here.  For some, the book will be life-changing.

The beginning chapters do a good job at explaining what ADHD really is - the underfocus and overfocus aspects of adhd. It explains why people that have ADHD like me might spend hours and hours on the internet but can't do certain daily chores without extreme motivation.

I really liked the chapter on flashing lights and guiding lights that analogy really explains how the environment can affect our behaviors and we can change our behaviors by changing our flashing lights to our guiding lights.

Chapter 5 was an informative chapter (it was about social skills for ADHD) basically. Being mindful of the conversation style and how we connect with people as well as being mindful of what deficits we have communicating with ADHD (such as not realizing that we are in a one sided conversation).

The chapters on exercise and sleep and nutrition were pretty basic though can be helpful for some.

Very Readable self help book.

This book was well-written, easy to read , helpful and quite interesting. I am someone who does in fact struggle with this disorder. The facts , advice and strategies this book offered was very helpful to me . I also like how you're able to skip around . It tells me that they understand that people with this disorder sometimes struggle with reading page for page and sticking to strict structure. Although structure is important to a degree because without it we would have trouble focusing and refocusing our attention spans. This book is simple and pretty much straight to the point . I highly recommend it for those who have ADHD or are interested in reading about it .

I won this book via Goodreads First Reads. I gave this book to one of my very best friends who is just now starting to address her to ADHD in her early 40s. She has enjoyed reading the book and is looking forward to using the strategies included in it.

One of the better reference books, helping those with ADHD get a better grip of this infernal affliction. It speaks on both the physical and cognitive type, hence the 4 stars.

Transforming ADHD strikes that right balance of information that comes both from the ‘head and the heart.’ Crosby and Lippert provide practical strategies to help adults function better with ADHD that not only are solidly based in the research literature, but also come from a wealth of both clinical and personal experience. ADHD affects adults in so many different ways. The authors understand the impact ADHD has on individuals’ lives, and the book provides tips that adults can apply in their work and family life along with lots of supportive advice. They really get what it’s like to live with ADHD.

This book was excellent at explaining current knowledge about ADHD. I had several aha moments that helped me better understand some of the things I experience. For that reason, I wanted to write a short review, just to recommend the book to other people - whether you have ADHD yourself or care about someone who does. I actually plan to read this book again at a later time, so I can make notes. Although I’ve read a lot of books about ADHD, this book taught me the most and gave me a lot of practical tips.

Short, simple, and to the point. I don't know if I have ADHD, but I suspect I do, and I'm looking forward to trying out some of the tools in this book. The self reflection exercises were also really helpful in helping me understand better how I think and work (regardless of whether or not I have ADHD).

Nothing really new to me other than a few brain scan information tidbits. On the up side, it has a more empathetic and positive tone than some books I’ve read, but also doesn’t try to polish the ADHD turd by claiming it brings a bunch of special benefits to the proverbial yard.

All books like this are dry, but two stars means its at least readable. Short discussion of ways to get beyond adult ADHD.

Read this as I have a few friends with ADHD and my boyfriend has it too. Has some good strategies but slightly too much of a focus on mindfulness for my liking.
