Rate this book
For some, suicide is life's greatest mercy. For others, hope never dies.
A tale of two strangers on a desperate road trip.

By forty, desk jockey Sam Bishop has lost his best years to a boring career and a worse marriage. He spends each inebriated moment building the courage to take his own life.

But Sam's attempt to jump to his death is dramatically interrupted by the promises of a troubled stranger. Jack Lucas, a homeless military veteran, implores Sam to stay alive for one more day and consider a wild alternative to death.

Now, Sam must balance severe depression with desperate hope on an unpredictable cross-country trip with his new guide. Their destination will give him a new way to live -- or see them both killed in the process.

It's 900 miles to Safford.

Loved, loved, loved this book

Sam and Jack developed such an amazing bond and I wasn't sure where it was going to take me but I remained engaged! Will follow Mr. Rawlings for more!

This book received five-stars by me from nearly the beginning. The book summary is obvious in this being about someone with depression and who is suicidal. However, Mr. Rawlings creates a protagonist whose symptoms include those not often discussed (e.g., ear-ringing). Fine details such as these textured a very believable character.

Yes, there is a lot of profanity and "trash-talk"....completely to be expected from someone who truly has no concern over remaining alive and following any form of etiquette.

Finally, regarding the antagonist, I was a bit surprised. Having read other books and having seen movies with the theme of "down-and-out person meets angel-in-disguise", I held assumptions of how the plot would unfold. Man, was I wrong. But, I'm not giving anything away.

The ending did seem hurried and incomplete...but completely understandable given that this is #1 in a series.

Moving tale of a man's deep depression

This novel delves into a man's inner soul as he deals with crippling depression and thoughts of suicide. A homeless man reaches out to him to stop him, a journey begins to find a path to save themselves. This poignant story touched me deeply as I have family that suffers from mental illnesses that no medicine can cure....only contain...and not always.

Gripping and real

900 Miles to Safford is an enthralling read that shines a light on subjects many authors might shy away from. Rawlings does a great job of creating real, relatable characters and exploring their journey.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story even though it's not what I typically read. The roller coaster of emotions Sam and Jack go through had me turning page after page to find out how it ended.

Well written, compelling, and fully deserving of 5 stars. Great work!

A joyless ride down the roads of Depression, Molestation and Suicide. Thought provoking. A little predictable, but an interesting read, none-the-less.

Disturbing story relating a suicide journey.

Those story brought me down, emotionally wore me out. The moral of the story was not apparent until near the end. If I were in a suicidal funk, this book might have encouraged me to go through with it. The author apparently was depending on sex to sell the story but all the F bombs did nothing to improve the reading experience. Lurid sex scenes did nothing to pull the morbid story together. The one redeeming nugget of hope was the dog appearing on the final page, saving the day.
