I really do love reading Hugo's works. Les Misérables is my favorite, and I am constantly rereading it.
But it was nice seeing where he started with his writing and how he progressed. Hans of Iceland, his first novel, I found inspiring. Not because the story was good, but you can imagine a young man and his struggle to command the written word to create the essence of the world his characters lived in. It is always a pleasure to be able to read an author's work in the order that they are written. You get much more insight into their personal growth as a person, and a writer.
A very good read!
