If this book consisted solely of the photographic illustrations, it would still be a knockout. When the concise, lucid text is added, it is a must read for those who want a clear understanding of why the ancient world is important to us today. I have to warn you not to drop it on your toe because this is a heavy sucker. It is 499 pages of quality, glossy paper. It is also heavy in wonderful, fascinating factoids. I compare it to my Aunt Mamie's fruitcake, heavy, densely packed with goodies and semi-intoxicating. If you are a lover of art, architecture, history or photography, this will appeal to you. If you are an armchair traveler, an amateur historian or a lover of Greek culture you will enjoy leafing through this volume. Which brings up another virtue of this format. It will withstand short interludes of reading. Put it by your bedside and read a short topic before you turn out the lights. Pick it up while the kids are napping, or read it while the wash is in the dryer. However you choose to read it, you'll enjoy it.
Excellent condensed and illustrated history that is easy to read and highlights key historical events and participants. Is an excellent summary for a fan of history.
This book I had bought on my own choice in hope that it would help me with my Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome history class I took at SNHU. I was glad I had done so because throughout the Greek portion in the class, I was able to use this book, along with the textbook, to stay on top of assignments and to better cite my forums. Where majority of the students were using what they found on the web or within what they had read so far in the textbook, I was able to further develop their forum posts with excerpts from the book.
This book is divided into easy to read and find sections. The pictures you find in this book are brightly colored and described from a historical Greek and humanities perspective. Not only are you looking at typical art such as sculpture, paintings, and carvings, but you are also looking at how it affected the culture and time period to that which they date.
This book is divided by two parts. Part one contains details and page turning information regarding the fall of Ancient Greece. You will look into all time periods that historians consider when discussing Ancient Greece. These time periods are from c. 2000 BCE-AD 138. Classical Greece and the Alexander the Great and on periods are given 6 chapters each!
Part two delves deep in the understanding and analyzing the Greek world. Architecture and Art is given 6 chapters which each have numerous subsections. Greek society is given 6 chapters also and includes religion and mythology, theatre, literature, philosophy, etc. Within each page are countless colorful pictures that allow you to have a better visual reference on what you read. This book gives in depth timelines to better follow when looking at only certain time periods such as that of the Hellenistic times or even the Dark Age.
If you are taking a European History, Ancient Greek and Rome, or Humanities course for college, this book will greatly benefit you. I was even able to use this book for my Humanities course for the ancient art sections.
Definitely an enjoyable and educational read that I felt so hungry to read more with each page. I will be looking for the Ancient Rome equivalent book to help with the last part of my class.
This is the perfect research book to get you started on Ancient Greece. Yes, it does not go too far in depth with a lot of things but you do get a general idea and as someone who bought this for research for a book I'm writing, I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would! I do wish there was more on Sparta but it is a good starting point!
Though filled with helpful and beautiful photos, the real treasure is the text surrounding them. A delightful summary of all aspects of ancient Greek history that we want to know.
An interesting read on the highlights of Ancient Greece. There is not a great deal of depth on any subject but, in all fairness, the book is described as an “encyclopedia” of Ancient Greece so that is what you can expect. I was also disappointed by the scarcity and lack of detail in maps provided. On the plus side, the text is generously illustrated with color photos, even though many of them are used in two or three different places in the book. There is also a fair amount of textual repetition which is undoubtedly due to the encyclopedia format. If you’re hoping to dive deeply into Greek history and culture this may not be the book for you.
