About the author

Vaikom Muhammad Basheer is regarded as one of the prominent literary figures ever existed in india. He was a legend in Kerala.

He was one of those outspoken figures who revolutionized Malayalam Literature, and Thus the World Literature itself with his dauntless sarcasm, satire, and black humor.

Often referred to as the Beypore Sultan (the king of Beypore) by the colleagues, he was one of the prominent figures behind the artistical, economical, and social reformation of the Kerala Culture.

His novel Shabdangal (The Voices) was once banned due to its echo that cyclonized a once feudalistic society.

He is also regarded as the translators nightmare. This is mainly because of the colloquial touch he added to his writings, which ethnically speaking would lose its humor and meaning when translated to other languages.

He was the sufi among the writers and and the greatest exponent of Gandhian Thought.

He was awarded with Padma Sri in 1982 for his overall contributions to nation as a freedom fighter, writer, and as a political activist.

This is the book by Basheer that I have read several times. This is one of the first books I read written by Basheer. This is also one of the best books written by him.

This is an evergreen classic that will never turn obsolete. The characters, their names, and their actions are all crafted marvelously. Only Basheer could make me laugh out loud and think deeply at the same time.

You can never show another book in any part of the world like this one, and it is an absolute- must-read if you know the Malayalam language.

I'm not an avid Malayalam reader by any stretch. In fact, I haven't read any literature in Malayalam owing to a lack of courage at my own fluency, since I've not ever formally studied the language. But, being constantly surrounded by readers of the language, and listening to them speak about the great works, I suffer from a great FOMO with respect to them.

After a lot of asking around and putting off, and considerations and reconsiderations, I finally picked up Basheer. And guess what, I finished it off in a day. It's a tiny little novella and a very simple story, granted. But it's still a great achievement for me to finish off a Malayalam book in one day! I'm thrilled.

But even beyond that was the joy of experiencing the writing of a master. Like I said, a simple little story, some fun occurrences, some weird characters and some social issues, touched upon obtusely. But what made me push through and read it all in a go was the humour—one can grin through the book at the weirdness of it all, at the various slangs, attitudes and characters touched upon, and, especially, at the brilliant, subtle satire! I've read reviews that say this is not his best work. This fact actually thrills me more.

Short to say, I'm glad I've forayed into Malayalam literature, and I'm glad I did it with Basheer. Can't wait to experience this new world. 😊

ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കുക ചിരിപ്പിക്കുക, രണ്ടും ബുദ്ധിമുട്ട് ഉള്ള കാര്യങ്ങൾ തന്നെയാണ്. ചിരിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കുക എന്നത് ശ്രീ വൈക്കം മുഹമ്മദ് ബഷീറിൻ്റെ സ്വതസിദ്ധമായ കഴിവാണ്. ഒറ്റയിരുപ്പിൽ വായിച്ചു തീർക്കാവുന്ന മനോഹരമായ ഒരു ചെറിയ നോവലാണ് ആനവാരിയും പൊൻകുരിശും.

A really enjoyable read! I had a grin on my face throughout this book, and lmao at many occasions. Basheer's ability to fill everything and anything with humor, and to keep the reader really engaged is unmatched and admirable. Highly recommend it for those who have a good sense of humor.

Anavariyum Ponkuirshum was an excellent read. It is just another one of Basheer's brilliant creations, the book filled with quick wit taken through an interesting plot. You will finish the book in one go, mostly, not primarily because the book is short but because Basheer's stories have magic in them and this one is so good. Pick this book up if you don't have any plans for a quiet evening or want to have a good time!

A classic for ages. No one gonna get bored reading this masterpiece again and again. The story explorers the personal feud between two main protagonists. The base and characters were well crafted by Basheer, which gave the story a pure indigenous touch one could possibly Imagine.
