Great stuff!

Brigham Young counseled the Saints: "If you are ever called upon to chasten a person, never chasten beyond the balm you have within you to bind up. . . . I say again, Do not chasten beyond the balm you have within you. . . . When you have the chastening rod in your hands, ask God to give you wisdom to use it, that you may not use it to the destruction of an individual, but to his salvation."8
Neal A Maxwell The Promise of Discipleship

Vicariously bearing our sins— whether bright or faded pink— Jesus, in fact, descended below all things in order that He might personally comprehend all things (D&C 88:6). Yes, we worship Jesus because He is, but we also worship Him because of what He is like, including His perfect attribute of long-suffering (Exodus 34:6-7).
Neal A Maxwell The Promise of Discipleship

Though of themselves life's defining moments may seem minor, our wise responses can gradually increase our traction on the demanding path of discipleship. For instance, we can decide daily, or in an instant, in seemingly little things, whether we respond with a smile instead of a scowl, or whether we give warm praise instead of exhibiting icy indifference. Each response matters in its small moment. After all, moments are the molecules that make up eternity, affecting not only ourselves but others, because our conduct even in seemingly small things can be contagious. "The current of life is made up of small springs, streams, and rivulets, or rather of little incidents which in the aggregate constitute the character of man here on earth. So small a thing as a kind word timely spoken to the sorrowful and afflicted often results in great good, and secures the esteem and gratitude of those to whom it may be addressed, while an ill word may do much harm."3 When we decide, for example, to be understanding instead of abrupt, the other party, in turn, may happily decide to hold on a little longer rather than give way to resentment. Whereas some contagious physical diseases are airborne, spiritual contagiousness can be attitude borne. Love, patience, and meekness can be just as infectious as rudeness.
Neal A Maxwell The Promise of Discipleship

Resilience is part of repentance, showing we have faith to try again—whether in a task or in a relationship. Resilience is really an affirmation of our true identities as spirit sons and daughters of God. We need not be permanently put down, because we can be "lifted up" by applying Christ's atonement (Alma 36:3). The "infinite atonement" thus can apply to our finite failures (Alma 34:12)

I’ve never found a book from Elder Maxwell that I didn’t love and find to be rich in doctrine and instruction. This book offers context to the reader as to what it really means to be the Lord’s disciple and to “see things as they really are.” Written at the end of his ministry, in his “sunset days”, Elder Maxwell writes with the same style of poetry he was always known for, but with the added credibility of being one who knows what he speaks of. This book could be reread several times for a greater understanding of the topic, scriptures and for added strength to our testimonies of our Savior Jesus Christ. Elder Maxwell offers hope and encouragement as he instructs us with each sentence being crafted to something of beauty in its prose of scriptural reference. It is easy to see the culmination of Elder Maxwell’s ministry in these writings. I would encourage anyone and everyone, regardless of personal circumstances, to take the time to figuratively sit at the feet of this Apostle and be taught more fully of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

In this book Neal A Maxwell talks about what it is to be a disciple. The path is fraught with a plethora of problems. If you’re looking to become a more dedicated disciple then this is one I would recommend you not miss. I felt uplifted and enlightened as I read it.

This is another great book written by Elder Neal A. Maxwell. I enjoyed the part about the spirit world, he makes you realize how our departed loved ones can still be a part of our lives.
Another one of those great reference books to have in your library to turn to when you need to prepare a talk, lesson or simply need a spiritual uplift.

I enjoyed discussing chapters of this book with some women in my neighborhood. I have always loved Elder Maxwell, and it had been quite awhile since I'd read anything by him. He has a thought provoking way of saying things, but now that I'm done, it's already fading, sadly.

This is the last book written by Apostle Maxwell, and it is just as much of a gem as his other books. His doctrine is sound, his testimony of Christ and His gospel is deep, and his word choices are exquisite. Elder Maxwell is well known for his artistic alliteration. Here is a good example from this book:

"To know Jesus more and more is to experience His attributes. We thus draw closer by way of appreciation, admiration, and even adoration of Him. We truly accelerate knowing Him, as we become more like Him by means of our imperfect adulation."

My translation: "As you come to know Christ, you come to follow Him. And as you follow Him, you come to know Him." But doesn't Elder Maxwell say it so much better?

This book covers topics such as divine determination, how God is long-suffering and just, that there is "enough and to spare" in the way of gospel knowledge, the value of the gift of the Holy Ghost, some nuggets about the spirit world, words about the prophet Joseph Smith, and a final testimony of Christ.

Wonderful book! I love reading Elder Maxwell's words about discipleship--life is about discipleship. Who do we follow? What are our goals and priorities? How do we lead our lives? We live in a time of commotion, but as we live as a disciple and follower of Christ the way is sure. It's not easy. Our trials match our progression to help us grow further. We must have a determination to focus on the Lord and His will for us. There's nothing else more important! This is why we're here. It's easy to get distracted, but as we live in the moment today by doing our best now to live as a disciple of Christ we will be blessed. We must be humble and do His will and care more about our discipleship than other worldly endeavors or honors of the world.

A really good review of and instruction concerning key points to consider when trying to become a true follower of Christ. It's a Maxwell book so it's full of deep meaning sentences and well worded aphorisms. So while it's a bit heavy in parts, it's words are bold and really provide some help on living more like the Savior.

In particular, I really enjoyed the chapter on the spirit world. Maxwell talked not only about the sheer volume of spirits there, but the intensity of the missionary work and teaching that is going on there. There'll be plenty of missionary work for us all to do when we cross over. Great book. You can't go wrong with Neal A. Maxwell.

It was in college that I read this book. I can't remember what I really liked about it, but I remember it touched me and changed me unlike even most religious books do. I should certainly re read it and I hope I like it as much this time too.

James here again. Elder Maxwell in his wonderful talent lets us know what discipleship really means and how we can and are to be disciples of our Lord and Savior. A great read for anyone wanting to know more about the Savior and about the covenants we make to be like him.

I really like how Elder Maxwell writes. It is very intellectual, I had to keep a dictionary handy. I love the way he illustrates his ideas with the scriptures. He bears a strong testimony of Jesus Christ, the Church and Joseph Smith.

This book was a little hard to read, but reading on Sundays when I am tired is not the greatest idea anyways. There are some excellent things in this book, and I have pulled a big handful of great quotes from this amazing man's writing to save for future use.

I read this book for a lesson. Maxwell centers most of his writings on dicsipleship so this book is all inclusive of his insight. Powerful.
